Alexis Díaz, Adam Ottavino, Joel Payamps, and Ryan Pressly each had three SV+HLD’s this past week to lead all relievers. The recently named All-Star Díaz continues his impressive season and it’s good to see Ottavino on this list as the Mets had not been able to provide many SV+HLD chances for a while. Payamps and Pressly continue to quietly have amazing seasons, with Pressly certainly being one of the bigger All-Star game snubs.
Notes
- Even factoring in a couple of poor outings in June, Scott Barlow has still been one of the better closers in baseball (save totals aside) since May. His 33.7% K and CSW rates both rank in the top 5 amongst current closers as does his 2.72 xFIP. The stuff is there, and the hope now is that he is finally traded to a team where he’ll get plenty of SV+HLD opportunities.
- I had talked a few weeks ago about how well Taylor Rogers has been pitching since mid-April and the next step was just getting more hold chances. Well, he finally got a hold on Wednesday, his first since the middle of May, and hopefully, there are more holds to come as his brother Tyler can’t be the only one getting holds.
- Colin Holderman is off the IL and back in a setup role in front of closer David Bednar. That should remain his role for the rest of the season, so long as the Pirates aren’t selling pieces like Bednar at the deadline. Bednar is having a career year and the reliever market looks like it may be a bit thin, so for the Pirates (7.5 games out of a playoff spot), perhaps it does make sense to move Bednar now while they can get maximum value.
- Nate Pearson may only have one hold this season but he has pitched really well out of the bullpen and between him and Trevor Richards, there’s potential to have huge second half value in holds leagues so long as one of them is able to start seeing consistent hold chances. For now, Yimi García continues to be a secondary setup option but his 4.84 ERA and 1.47 WHIP aren’t exactly helping his case to stick in that role.

Is there a list strictly for middle relief pitchers? My league counts Holds and Saves as two distinct categories. Was there a Holds list in the past?
