Spring Training Breakout Games Day 3

Recapping The Day 3 Spring Training Breakout Games

Spring Breakout was introduced to the world in 2024 and brought back in 2025. Prospects help grow the game, and being able to see the potential future of a team prior to the MLB level is great. With four games on Day 3, there were plenty of top-100 prospects involved. Outside of the top-100 prospects, there are plenty of up-and-coming prospects on display. Here are some of the best performances and some of the prospects that struggled to live up to expectations.

Spring Training Breakout Games Day 3

Minnesota Twins @ Toronto Blue Jays

What We Saw From The Top Prospects From Each Team:

The top prospects involved between the two sides here were Arjun Nimmala and Luke Keaschall. Other top prospects for the Twins included Brandon Winokur, Eduardo Beltre, Billy Amick, Diego Cartaya, and Gabriel Gonzalez. For the Blue Jays, top prospects included Alan Roden, Orelvis Martinez, and Trey Yesavage.

Arjun Nimmala picked up on his successful end of 2024 by going 2-4 with an RBI. Outside of Nimmala, there aren’t many top-ranked bats for the Blue Jays. The arms stole the show, starting with Jake Bloss. Bloss already made an MLB debut but shoved with four strikeouts in two shutout innings. Bloss looked advanced for this game, and the stat line agrees. However, Twins bats saw arguably better stuff in the second arm to enter for the Blue Jays. Trey Yesavage, the 20th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, showed off his ability to miss bats. The split change is still a go-to out pitch, but the fastball and cut fastball looked good as well.

Which Prospects Struggled:

A few bats struggled for the Twins, which adds up since the Blue Jays pitchers combined for a shutout. Brandon Winokur went 0-2 with two strikeouts, Billy Amick went 0-2 with a strikeout, and Eduardo Beltre was 0-2 with a strikeout. Former #7 overall international prospect Enmanuel Bonilla has struggled since his Dominican season in 2023. Bonilla is still 19 years old, but he went 0-2 with a strikeout in the breakout game. Outside of the few top 100 names, most of the prospects in this game aren’t highly ranked. Billy Amick and Brandon Winokur were the two names just outside the top 100-150 to watch. Rayne Doncon was a top international name for the Dodgers back in 2021 but has been a bit up and down since that season. Doncon went 0-2 with a strikeout, but the 2025 season is a big one for the 21-year-old.

Which Prospects Stood Out the Most:

Arjun Nimmala and Trey Yesavage stood out the most in this game. As two of the top three ranked prospects in the game, Nimmala had two hits and Yesavage threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. The other prospects that stood out were all Blue Jays pitchers. Jake Bloss, Khal Stephen, Kendry Rojas, and Mason Fluharty combined to throw seven innings of shutout baseball. Khal Stephen and Kendry Rojas are slightly lower-ranked pitchers in the Blue Jays system. However, they could both rise quickly with a good 2025 season. Stephen has slightly more advanced stuff, and both prospects are 22 years old.

Alan Roden also stood out for the Blue Jays. As another older prospect, Roden has had an insane spring.

Luke Keaschall only went 1-4 and was caught stealing, but it is clear the bat will play at the big league level once he finds a defensive home.

New York Yankees @ Baltimore Orioles

What We Saw From The Top Prospects From Each Team:

George Lombard Jr. has been a hot name in spring training and headlined the Yankees’ prospect team in this game, followed by Spencer Jones, Roderick Arias, Brando Mayea, and pitchers Carlos Lagrange and Ben Hess. Lagrange was the star of the show, dominating through all four innings of his outing. Both runs surrendered were unique situations of a wild pitch after a failed pick-off move and a misplayed ball that led to an inside-the-park home run.

Samuel Basallo, Enrique Bradfield Jr., Dylan Beavers, and Vance Honeycutt are the clear top names for the Orioles. Bradfield Jr. and Beavers were able to disrupt the game with their speed. Honeycutt took advantage of some awful defense allowing an inside-the-park home run, but still showcased the tools.

The group of top Orioles prospects is highly ranked, but there are also some international names that should be watched. Joshua Liranzo, Stiven Martinez, and Leandro Arias all have shown promising tools. Leandro Arias went 2-2, including the walk-off single to win the game.

Which Prospects Struggled:

Roderick Arias was the top international prospect in the class of 2022. He struggled in his DSL debut but rebounded nicely in the FCL the next season. Arias went 0-2 with two strikeouts against the Orioles. Strikeouts are the main issue of Arias, as he held a high strikeout rate of 31% in 2024. Arias is still 20 years old and has the pedigree of a top prospect. He did draw a walk, but the swing-and-miss on off-speed pitches needs to be fixed if he’s going to succeed.

Keeler Morfe started the game for the Orioles and struggled to throw pitches for strikes. As one of the more exciting prospects coming into this outing, Morfe looked as if he never settled in. The command was below average. The Yankees hitters were able to sit fastball and lay off anything outside the zone. While it wasn’t a great outing, Morfe is still just an 18-year-old kid.

Samuel Basallo didn’t impress going 0-3, but seeing him capitalize on an impressive spring would have raised the stock to new heights. His first at-bat was a hard-hit fly ball that died in the air, but Basallo is a big league bat that should debut before August 2025.

Which Prospects Stood Out the Most:

Enrique Bradfield impacted the game in every aspect. The speed is plus plus, and he showed that in the first inning, forcing an errand throw that allowed him to advance to third base. Bradfield then scored on a wild pitch, manufacturing a run himself.

Austin Overn was a 3rd-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft that already reached High-A. Overn put together a nice swing for an RBI triple.

Outside of these two guys, Dylan Beavers feels a bit forgotten about. Beavers had two rough months in 2024, but still managed a good season. He went 1-3 with a stolen base in the breakout game and has 20-20 potential.

Ben Hess and Bryce Cunningham were both impressive, but the stat line makes it look less successful. Both pitchers gave up some hits, but neither had terrible issues with command. Hess had three strikeouts in two innings, while Cunningham had one in his 1.2 innings. The stuff from both of these arms is above average, with potential plus pitches. These two arms could move fast and debut early in 2026.

George Lombard Jr. continues to look the part. As a great athlete who is figuring it all out, Lombard is the most exciting prospect bat in the Yankees system.

Texas Rangers @ San Francisco Giants

What We Saw From The Top Prospects From Each Team:

The Giants had some top names on display that included James Tibbs III, Rayner Arias, Jhonny Level, Lisbel Diaz, and Carson Whisenhunt. Whisenhunt started the game looking great but ran into a little trouble in the third inning. Tibbs III, Diaz, and Arias were all able to pick up one hit, while Jhonny Level was 0-2 with a strikeout. Level, Arias, and Diaz were the three big names to watch as they all come off solid seasons.

The Rangers are a farm with plenty of talent, led by Sebastian Walcott. Yolfran Castillo, Yeremi Cabrera, Paulino Santana, Pablo Guerrero, and Anthony Gutierrez are the group of young international names after Walcott. The Rangers also hold some new college bats like Malcolm Moore and Dylan Dreiling. A lot of the international names were substituted late into the game, such as Paulino, who was able to go 1-1 with a single.

Sebastian Walcott was the biggest name in this game, and he went 2-4 two days after his 19th birthday.

Yolfran Castillo went 2-3, continuing the success from his DSL/ACL 2024 season.

Which Prospects Struggled:

Tough to say any of the prospects struggled in this game, but Bo Davidson and Jhonny Level didn’t come up with a hit. They are two of the quickest rising names in the Giants system, and both of these bats starred in 2024. Davidson went 0-3 with a strikeout and Level 0-2, also tallying a strikeout. Both of these guys have the tools to put up 20-20 seasons, but Level has only had DSL experience, and Davidson was 22 years old at Low-A.

Caden Scarborough had a tough outing for the Rangers. The sixth round arm out of high school in 2023 walked a batter, gave up two hits, and two earned runs. In only 10.1 MiLB innings pitched, Scarborough walked nine batters. The stuff is decent, but the command will need to improve vastly before any sort of potential starter talk continues. The only other Ranger who didn’t perform decently was Abimelec Ortiz. He went 0-4 with a strikeout and has quickly fallen off from his superstar year in 2023. Ortiz will need a hot first half in 2025 to regain some of the prospect buzz that has been lost.

Which Prospects Stood Out the Most:

Winston Santos impressed the most for Texas, throwing three no-hit innings with six strikeouts. As a big body that throws hard, Santos dominated. Santos has a solid three-pitch mix, but the fastball/slider combo was dominating in the breakout game. The slide is a plus pitch that got some ugly swings and misses. Paired with that fastball, Santos could be a No. 4 or 5 starter in the bigs when the season starts.

Sebastian Walcott is the clear answer here. The kid looks way advanced and is having continued success against players older than him.

For the Giants, Whisenhunt, Rayner Arias, and Lisbel Diaz stood out to me. All were able to find success in some sort but showed above-average potential in their games. Arias and Diaz are two big kids who can hit the ball hard. Whisenhunt is a college arm coming off a rough season, but with a plus-plus changeup. If Whisenhunt can get the command back to a respectable level, he’ll be pitching in San Francisco shortly into 2025.

Angels @ Chicago Cubs

What We Saw From The Top Prospects From Each Team:

The Cubs have had one of the best top-100 prospect groupings for what feels like some years now. Headlined by the Jaguar, Kevin Alcántara, there are plenty of MLB-caliber prospects nearing a debut. James Triantos, Cade Horton, and Moises Ballesteros are the three biggest names here. All three have a case that they are big-league ready for Opening Day. Given how difficult it has been to push the Matt Shaw narrative, Ballesteros and Triantos may be blocked to start the season. Each of those bats was able to pick up a few big hits, and Cade Horton looked solid in his 2 innings.

The Angels have moved their first-round picks quickly of late with Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel. This game is headlined by the most recent first-round pick, Christian Moore. The Angels have some decent top names, including Nelson Rada, Caden Dana, Joswa Lugo, and George Klassen. Dana and Klassen should be full-time MLB arms shortly, and Moore should be an everyday player.

Which Prospects Struggled:

Tough to say any of the Cubs prospects struggled in this game. Most of the top names succeeded mightily, and the mid-tier names all put something together. Leadoff man Christian Franklin went 0-3 but made up for it by stealing a base and scoring a run. The Cubs have a lot to look forward to with a fun group of prospects waiting in the wings.

Caden Dana and Christian Moore struggled to show why they are the No. 1 and 2 prospects for the Angels. Dana was lit up, giving up four earned runs, on four hits and two walks with just one strikeout. Moore went 0-3 with a strikeout while facing one of the better pitching prospects the Cubs have. Juan Flores went 0-2 with two strikeouts after receiving a lot of buzz this off-season. Three of the Angels’ top names didn’t perform at the level expected. Dana should be back at the MLB level by late May, with Moore not far behind him.

Which Prospects Stood Out the Most:

For the Cubs, it was Cade Horton, Kevin Alcántara, Moises Ballesteros, and James Triantos. The four top-ranked prospects for the Cubs in the game all showed out. Alcántara went yard off Dana on a pitch that looked like he got jammed. Both Ballesteros and Triantos picked up two hits in the game, while Triantos stole home. Former top international name Cristian Hernandez also picked up two hits and stole second when Triantos stole home. Cade Horton had his stuff working, throwing two innings, giving up one run, two hits, and striking out three.

Jaxon Wiggins is just another live and electric arm that pitched well for the Cubs. He threw one inning, giving up nothing and striking out a batter. The Cubs farm system has been stacked for years, and this game displayed how much potential it has again.

Nelson Rada and Randy De Jesus were the two top international signings from 2022 for the Angels. Rada was one of the quickest rising prospects, but 2024 was a rough season for him. De Jesus hasn’t quite had a dominant season yet, but 2024 had him trending in the right direction. Rada was 1-3 with a stolen base and a walk, while De Jesus went 1-3 with a home run and two strikeouts. The strikeouts were a problem in 2024, but the home run and the swing look so pure that the strikeouts can be tolerated for now. Cole Fontanelle also put together a nice game, going 2-4 with a home run.
