Evan Phillips fastball was up 1.0 MPH, and the sweeper looked good. He appears to be back to pre-surgery form.

Jonathan Bowlan threw more sliders than usual here, and the results were positive. The stuff in general is a bit down still, and it’s not like they can afford to give him too much time off.

Garrett Cleavinger also went heavy slider usage, which makes sense given his sinker being down still. I think this will work for him, but it’d obviously be nice to see that fastball velo return.

Tyler Kinley’s fastball was down here, and he’s been buried on the depth chart for now.

Nice to see Matt Strahm’s fastball up 1.6 MPH here, and perhaps the Royals could still get a nice return at the deadline for him.

OK, we can maybe get kind of excited for Ryan Gusto. His fastball was up 2 MPH here, and there are some good pitches to work with, but it still gives me a headache sorting through all of his eight pitches.

Bennett Sousa looks much better in his return from the IL this time than he had earlier in the year. The fastball was up over a MPH, and the slider looked good. With King now at AAA, there should be opportunity right away for Sousa.

Clayton Beeter wasn’t that bad here; the fastball was actually way up. The home run by Goodman was on a 3-2 slider down and out of the zone, so what are you gonna do?

The worst (best?) name amongst relievers is back as Scott Blewett did not, in fact, blow it, but there’s also not much to get excited about here with a middling stuff profile.

Ryan Zeferjahn gave up a leadoff single to Walker on a groundball that hit off the bag, but then went on to strike out the next three batters. The stuff’s legit (always has been), but can we trust the command?

ATH 5 – ARI 6

Paul Sewald got burned by the long ball once again here, although this was just his second blown save all season. After getting two outs, he left a sweeper up to Walton (could have been caught) before Wilson jumped on a fastball up and in for the tying home run. Not fully panicking, but Sewald needs to bounce back strong this week.
