Jhoan Duran, Phil Maton, Aroldis Chapman, Reed Garrett, Griffin Jax, and Cade Smith all had three SV+HLDs this past week, with Duran and Maton racking four each. Maton and Garrett have settled in as the Mets top two set up options it appears, with Maton really taking off since joining the Mets. Maton doesn’t throw hard and won’t be a huge strikeout guy, but with the Mets he hold a 0.82 WHIP, 3.02 SIERA and 21.3% K-BB rate over 20.2 IP, numbers we are certainly ok with.
Notes
- Dennis Santana, Colin Holderman, Jesús Tinoco, Cole Sands, Tim Herrin, Ryan Fernandez, and Emilio Pagán were all added to the list this week. Santana is breaking out with the Pirates and now in a closer committee but the team did get Holderman back from the IL this past week as well. Tinoco, Sands, Fernandez, Pagan and maybe even Herrin (despite being in a loaded bullpen) could see some more hold chances the rest of the way.
- Bryan Hudson, Joe Kelly, Jorge López, John Schreiber, José Buttó, Colin Poche, and Adam Ottavino all fell off the list this week. Hudson was demoted to AAA as he deals with decreased velocity since returning from the IL. Kelly, Lopez and Poche all landed on the IL this past week.
- Clay Holmes was temporarily removed as the Yankees closer this week, with the team likely to mix and match for the time being. Holmes has been more good than bad this season, and I wouldn’t rule out a return to the closer role before the end of the season. That said he’s really better used as a high leverage arm more than a traditional closer so maybe they will use this time to install Luke Weaver or Jake Cousins as the “closer”, while using Holmes in different spots.
