We can add a few more teams to our list of “wait until next year” squads. The Yankees and Angels, particularly in light of this week’s injuries to Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, look like they are done. The Red Sox, Guardians, and Padres are hanging by a thread and will need to get hot in a hurry to remain relevant this season. The clubs who’ve thrown in the hat may start to tinker with their rotations in September, so be extra wary of the matchups for their starters. Likewise, the few squads who look like locks figure to bake in extra days of rest for their key starters down the stretch.
Below, we break down every MLB team’s starting rotation for the next few weeks to help you plan the back end of your fantasy rotation. This tool is beneficial if you’re looking for streamers or flexing fringe starters in and out of your lineup and can be especially useful in September if you are trying to reach an innings cap.
Before we delve into the teams, below are our matchup rankings. These match those in Nick Pollack’s SP Steamers for consistency. If you disagree, that’s your prerogative! They are meant to be a loose guide. The most important thing is to pay attention to the matchups.

Here’s a key for a few terms you may encounter below:
(OFF) means the team has an off-day before they play that team.
(DH) indicates a doubleheader that day.
SPOT STARTER should be obvious, but this pitcher will only start once.
??? represents an unclear rotational spot, and the notes will explain options.
Above all else, please remember that schedules change often! The grids below represent our best estimate at the time of publishing, but players get hurt, come back from the IL, get sent down or called up, or get an extra day of rest all the time. Use this as a guide and double-check a player’s status before making roster changes.

Zac Gallen | @ LAD | BAL | @ CHC | @ NYM |
Merrill Kelly | @ LAD | COL | @ CHC | @ NYM |
Brandon Pfaadt | @ LAD | COL | @ CHC | CHC |
Zach Davies | BAL (OFF) | COL | @ NYM | CHC |
Slade Cecconi | BAL | @ CHC | @ NYM | CHC |
- Brandon Pfaadt has pitched better lately and is worth streaming against a Rockies team with the lowest wRC+ in the league away from home this year.

Bryce Elder | @ COL | @ LAD | PIT | @ PHI |
Charlie Morton | @ COL | @ LAD | PIT | @ MIA (OFF) |
Spencer Strider | @ COL | STL (OFF) | PIT | @ MIA |
Max Fried | @ LAD | STL | @ PHI (DH) | @ MIA |
Jared Shuster | @ LAD | STL | @ PHI | PHI |
- Jared Shuster replaces Allan Winans in the rotation, who was sent down after getting thumped by the Mets last week. Winans, or someone else, could be recalled next week for the second game of Atlanta’s doubleheader against the Phillies on September 11. The team could also opt to pull their rotation forward, but that seems unlikely, given their huge divisional lead.
Possible Rotation | First Start | Second Start | Third Start | Fourth Start |

Grayson Rodriguez | CHW | @ LAA | STL | TBR |
Dean Kremer | CHW | @ LAA | STL | @ HOU |

Cole Irvin | @ ARI (OFF) | @ BOS (OFF) | TBR | @ HOU |
Kyle Bradish | @ ARI | @ BOS | TBR | @ CLE |
Jack Flaherty | @ ARI | @ BOS | TBR | @ CLE |
- There’s no indication Baltimore plans to move away from their six-man rotation anytime soon. Tyler Wells and John Means could join the fray soon, perhaps in the bullpen.
Possible Rotation | First Start | Second Start | Third Start | Fourth Start |
---|---|---|---|---|
Chris Sale | HOU | @ KCR | BAL | NYY |
Brayan Bello | HOU | @ TBR | BAL | @ TOR |
Kutter Crawford | HOU | @ TBR | NYY | @ TOR |
James Paxton | @ KCR (OFF) | @ TBR | NYY | @ TOR |
Tanner Houck | @ KCR | BAL (OFF) | NYY | @ TEX |
- Kutter Crawford has been pitching well and is still widely available. Unfortunately, his upcoming schedule isn’t very appealing.
Possible Rotation | First Start | Second Start | Third Start | Fourth Start |

Jameson Taillon | MIL | @ CIN | ARI | @ COL |
Justin Steele | MIL | SFG | ARI | @ ARI (OFF) |
Kyle Hendricks | MIL | SFG | ARI | @ ARI |
Javier Assad | @ CIN (DH)(OFF) | SFG | @ COL | @ ARI |
??? | @ CIN | ARI | @ COL | PIT (OFF) |
- The Cubs’ rotation is in flux with a doubleheader next weekend and no clear-cut fifth starter. The team recalled Jordan Wicks on Saturday, and presumably, he’ll slot in somewhere, probably in Game 2 of the doubleheader on Friday. Drew Smyly remains an option, but he’s struggled this year and appears destined for the bullpen.

Dylan Cease | @ BAL | @ KCR | KCR | MIN |
Touki Toussaint | DET (OFF) | @ KCR | KCR | MIN |
Mike Clevinger | DET | @ DET (OFF) | KCR | @ WSN |
- The schedule looks good after the Baltimore series, but Mike Clevinger is the only starter worth a speculative add.
Possible Rotation | First Start | Second Start | Third Start | Fourth Start |
---|---|---|---|---|
Andrew Abbott | @ SFG | CHC | STL | @ NYM |
Brandon Williamson | @ SFG | SEA | STL | @ NYM |
Hunter Greene | @ SFG | SEA | @ DET (OFF) | @ NYM |
Graham Ashcraft | CHC (DH)(OFF) | SEA | @ DET | MIN |
Ben Lively | CHC | STL (OFF) | @ DET | MIN |
- Note: The Reds are taxed one tier anytime they are home. Hence, different shades for games vs. CHC, SEA, STL, and MIN.
- Ben Lively is off the IL and should start either the second game of Friday’s doubleheader or Saturday. If he starts Friday, the team may pull the rotation forward a day, as Thursday’s off-day will keep them on schedule. The other option is to employ a spot starter or bullpen game.
- Nick Lodolo won’t be an option, as he was pulled off his rehab assignment. It seems unlikely he’ll pitch again this season.

Tanner Bibee | @ MIN | MIN | @ LAA | TEX |
Logan Allen | TBR (OFF) | MIN | @ SFG | TEX |
Noah Syndergaard | TBR | @ LAA | @ SFG | @ KCR |
- Cal Quantrill should return this week, though it’s unclear in what capacity. He could bump someone, join the bullpen, or put the Guardians into a six-man rotation.
- UPDATE: Syndergaard was DFA’d Sunday night, meaning Quantrill will likely slot into his place in the rotation.

Kyle Freeland | ATL | @ ARI | CHC | SFG |
Chris Flexen | TOR (OFF) | @ ARI | CHC | SFG |
Ty Blach | TOR | @ SFG (OFF) | CHC | @ SDP |
- Note: The Rockies are taxed one tier anytime they are home. Hence, different shades for games vs. CHC & SFG.
- There aren’t many appealing options with the Rockies, but Peter Lambert has a 3.60 ERA away from Coors this season and has road matchups against the D’Backs and Giants ahead after he faces Atlanta on Tuesday.
Possible Rotation | First Start | Second Start | Third Start | Fourth Start |

Matt Manning | NYY | @ NYY (OFF) | CHW | @ LAA |
Eduardo Rodriguez | NYY | @ NYY | CIN (OFF) | @ LAA |
Alex Faedo | @ CHW | @ NYY | CIN | @ LAD |
- The Tigers’ upcoming schedule is about as good as it gets, and outside of Eduardo Rodriguez, their starters are widely available.

Hunter Brown | NYY | SDP | @ KCR | KCR |
Justin Verlander | NYY | SDP | @ KCR | KCR |
- José Urquidy seems most likely to bounce in and out of the rotation for the Astros, who could juggle their order with an off day on Thursday.

Zack Greinke | PIT | BOS | @ TOR | HOU (OFF) |

Brady Singer | PIT | CHW | @ CHW | HOU |
Jordan Lyles | BOS (OFF) | CHW | @ CHW | CLE |
Alec Marsh | BOS | @ TOR (OFF) | @ CHW | CLE |
- The Royals may push Brady Singer’s next start back a day to give him some extra rest. Angel Zerpa would likely get the spot start, but you’d have to be pretty desperate to use him, even though it’s a plus matchup against the Pirates.

Patrick Sandoval | @ OAK (OFF) | CLE | @ SEA | @ TBR |
Chase Silseth | @ OAK | CLE | DET (OFF) | @ MIN |
Griffin Canning | @ OAK | CLE | DET | @ MIN |
- Griffin Canning should assume Shohei Ohtani’s spot in the rotation now that Ohtani won’t pitch again this season. However, it’s unclear whether Chase Silseth, hit in the head by an errant throw on Saturday, will make his next start.

Lance Lynn | ARI | @ MIA (OFF) | @ WSN | @ SEA |
Julio Urías | ATL | @ MIA | SDP | @ SEA |
Gavin Stone | ATL | @ MIA | SDP | DET |
- Tony Gonsolin won’t pitch again this season, leaving the fifth spot in the rotation open to a combination of Gavin Stone, whom the Dodgers just recalled, Ryan Pepiot, and potentially Emmet Sheehan.
Possible Rotation | First Start | Second Start | Third Start | Fourth Start |

Braxton Garrett | @ WSN | LAD | @ MIL | ATL |
Eury Pérez | @ WSN | LAD | @ MIL | ATL |
Edward Cabrera | @ WSN | @ PHI | @ MIL | NYM |
- The Marlins have a hole in their rotation since Johnny Cueto hit the IL last week. Edward Cabrera seems most likely to fill it. Despite his inconsistency, he’s worth monitoring.

Wade Miley | @ CHC | PHI | @ NYY | MIA |

Brandon Woodruff | @ CHC | @ PIT | MIA | WSN |
Freddy Peralta | PHI (OFF) | @ PIT | MIA | WSN |

Sonny Gray | CLE | @ CLE | TBR | @ CHW |
Joe Ryan | @ TEX (OFF) | @ CLE | TBR | @ CHW |
Bailey Ober | @ TEX | NYM (OFF) | TBR | @ CIN |
- Joe Ryan is back, and the Twins’ rotation is loaded. All of these guys should be rostered in the majority of leagues.

Tylor Megill | TEX | SEA | @ MIN | CIN |

Kodai Senga | TEX | @ WSN | ARI | CIN |
Carlos Carrasco | SEA (OFF) | @ MIN (OFF) | ARI | @ MIA |
David Peterson | SEA | @ MIN | ARI | @ MIA |
- The schedule isn’t bad after the Rangers’ series, but none of these guys inspires much confidence outside of Kodai Senga.

Gerrit Cole | @ DET | DET (OFF) | MIL | @ PIT |
Clarke Schmidt | @ DET | DET | @ BOS | @ PIT |
Carlos Rodón | @ HOU | DET | @ BOS | @ PIT |
- Michael King will start Tuesday’s contest but won’t go more than a few innings and will likely give way to Jhony Brito. This could be the model as we advance when this spot in the rotation comes up.
- Clarke Schmidt’s upcoming slate is juicy. Only the matchup against the Red Sox in Boston is cause for concern.
Possible Rotation | First Start | Second Start | Third Start | Fourth Start |

Zach Neal | @ SEA | TOR | @ HOU | SDP |
JP Sears | LAA (OFF) | TOR | @ HOU | SEA |
Paul Blackburn | LAA | @ TEX (OFF) | @ HOU | SEA |

Zack Wheeler | @ MIL (OFF) | @ SDP | ATL | @ ATL |
Aaron Nola | @ MIL | MIA (OFF) | ATL | @ ATL |
- The Phillies will need another starter for their doubleheader on September 11. There’s a good chance Ranger Suárez will return by then.

Rich Hill | @ STL | PHI | @ HOU | @ OAK |
Yu Darvish | SFG | PHI | @ LAD | @ OAK |
Michael Wacha | SFG | PHI | @ LAD | COL |
- The Padres need to get hot to keep their playoff hopes alive, but the schedule doesn’t offer many breaks.

Logan Webb | CIN | @ CHC | COL | @ COL |
Sean Manaea | @ SDP | @ CHC | CLE | @ COL |
Tristan Beck | @ SDP | @ CHC | CLE | @ COL |
- Kyle Harrison struck out five in three and one-third innings in his MLB debut but allowed five hits and a couple of runs. Two of his next three matchups are favorable, so he’s worth keeping tabs on.
Possible Rotation | First Start | Second Start | Third Start | Fourth Start |

Bryce Miller | OAK | @ CIN | @ TBR | LAD |
Logan Gilbert | @ NYM (OFF) | @ CIN | LAA | LAD |
Luis Castillo | @ NYM | @ TBR | LAA | @ OAK |
- It’s probably too late to add Bryan Woo for Monday’s matchup against the A’s, but his next few starts aren’t very imposing either.
Possible Rotation | First Start | Second Start | Third Start | Fourth Start |

Miles Mikolas | SDP | @ ATL | @ BAL | PHI |
Dakota Hudson | PIT (OFF) | @ ATL | @ BAL | MIL |

- With two off days this week, the Rays could stick with a four-man rotation until September 5. They’ll need to fill that gap at some point, and Taj Bradley still seems like the favorite.
