The two setup guys in this bullpen battled here, and Seymour’s stuff looked promising with his four-seamer hitting 100.2 MPH on his final pitch (Harris has a really good sweeper, but the fastballs are rough).

Luke Weaver’s fastball was, you guessed it, below 95.5 MPH here, sitting at 95.
Mason Montgomery — Sinker usage 40% (+27 pts vs. 13% usual). Montgomery opened the inning by hitting Hill with the very first pitch he threw, but then got Devers to ground into a double play before a pair of opposite-field hits made things interesting. He got Lee to ground out to end the inning, but that’s back-to-back outings with no strikeouts.

NYM 2 – TBR 6

Dylan Ross didn’t walk anyone here, which is a positive, and he throws 99 MPH (may have an Empty Velocity problem though) with a plus splitter, so what’s not to like? He feels kind of like Ryne Stanek 2.0.

Garrett Cleavinger hasn’t walked more than one batter in an outing since March, and even going back to last season, he had just one two-walk outing. It’s been a season to forget for Cleavinger.

JoJo Romero — Sinker usage 73% (+29 pts vs. 44% usual); Sweeper usage 9% (-27 pts vs. 36% usual). Interesting, but he only threw one pitch to a left here (the one sweeper he threw).
Abner Uribe — Sinker up 1.1 MPH (99.8 vs. 98.7 season avg); Slider usage 71% (+35 pts vs. 37% usual); Sinker usage 29% (-34 pts vs. 63% usual). Love to see it in his first game back.
DL Hall — Sinker up 1.9 MPH (97.1 vs. 95.2 season avg). Keeps looking great.

Chicago Cubs

Daniel Palencia — Four-Seamer down 0.8 MPH (98.6 vs. 99.4 season avg). So everything about this was infuriating. First, the usage. I’m not sure this fireman role is the best role for Palencia (it’s very different from closing). The balk was a bit ticky-tacky and dumb, but OK, whatever, let’s move on. The bloop “double” down the right field line by Vaughn NEEDS to be caught by Suzuki (I could see them change the scoring on this to an error). And then his 0-2 to Yelich…he throws a slider middle-in?! I hate the pitch call, but the execution was worse (he’s really missing that splitter that was so good for him in the WBC). He got Lara to line out on a 97 MPH fastball up in the zone (that velocity is an issue), and finally a groundout ended the inning. So, to summarize, some of this was on Palencia (balk, 0-2 slider to a lefty), but these feel like relatively easy fixes (assuming the fastball isn’t cooked). It does feel like Jacob Webb is pretty safe in the closer role either way.
Ryan Zeferjahn — Sweeper usage 71% (+33 pts vs. 37% usual). Ughhhh, the rollercoaster continues.

ATH 5 – TEX 8

Jordan Hicks — Four-Seamer usage 48% (+32 pts vs. 16% usual). Hicks gave up a Daikan Park home run here to Paredes on a fly ball with a .050 xBA, and that is only a home run in Houston or Boston. It’s the command I’m worried about, though.
Grant Taylor — Sinker down 0.9 MPH (97.9 vs. 98.8 season avg); Sinker usage 43% (+33 pts vs. 10% usual). As long as he’s throwing 97+ MPH, we should be alright.

Houston Astros

Jordan Romano — Four-Seamer down 0.8 MPH (93.2 vs. 94.0 season avg); Slider usage 76% (+26 pts vs. 51% usual). I just don’t get how this keeps working. The command was at least decent here.

NYY 7 – LAA 3

Paul Blackburn — Sinker up 1.0 MPH (95.3 vs. 94.3 season avg). Showing no signs of letting up.

Los Angeles Angels

Samy Natera Jr. — Four-Seamer up 1.0 MPH (95.8 vs. 94.8 season avg). Natera had terrible command here in his first game back from the IL, and was Singled Out with two opposite-field two-strike singles by lefties as well as a bunt single. I really wish he’d trust his slider a bit more, especially with two strikes against lefties.

PHI 7 – ARI 1

Philadelphia Phillies

Jonathan Bowlan — Four-Seamer usage 71% (+26 pts vs. 45% usual). It is his best pitch (and one of the best four-seamers in baseball).

Justin Wrobleski — Four-Seamer up 1.3 MPH (95.8 vs. 94.5 season avg). Making his bullpen debut, Wrobleski’s stuff looked better than the results suggest.
