Notes

Transactions and Schedule

  • There were 20 teams in action on Thursday with BOS, CHW, KCR, MIN, SEA, TEX, MIA, ARI, LAD, and SFG all getting some rest for their bullpens.
  • The Tigers placed long reliever Alex Faedo on the paternity list.

Yesterday’s Performances

STL 3 – MIL 0

W: Andrew Kittredge (2-4)

L: Nick Mears (1-5)

HD: JoJo Romero (30)

SV:  Ryan Helsley (39)

  • The Cards excellent bullpen, and perhaps secret weapon, continued putting in the work with three scoreless innings of relief. Andrew Kittredge earned his second win of the season with a perfect seventh and then gave way to JoJo Romero who hit 30 holds on the season. Ryan Helsley handled the ninth for his 39th save of the season. Can’t draw it up much better than that.
  • Milwaukee kept pace with St. Louis for six innings before the wheels fell off in the seventh. Nick Mears took the loss, his fifth, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk.

OAK 3 – TBR 1

HD: Michel Otañez (2), Grant Holman (3), Tyler Ferguson (5), T.J. McFarland (15)

SV: Mason Miller (20)

  • Mason Miller secured his 20th save of the season, a nice little milestone for his first full season in the majors AND as a closer. Miller struck out two and lowered his ERA to 1.85 in the process. Every reliever ahead of Miller also earned a hold in this one, including T.J. McFarland who earned the coveted one pitch, one out hold.
  • The Rays bullpen did their part, keeping the Athletics off the board for 4.2 innings in relief of Jeffrey Springs, who only managed 3.1 innings in his start and took the loss. Kevin Kelly shined brightest with his 1.2 innings of work, allowing zero base runners and striking out two.

ATL 3 – PHI 2

HD: Pierce Johnson (9)

SV: Raisel Iglesias (28)

  • Pierce Johnson earned his ninth hold of the season in support of an excellent Spencer SchwellenbachJohnson pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two baserunners via the free pass, but also striking two out. Raisel Iglesias struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 28th save in dominant fashion.
  • Tanner Banks and José Ruiz both pitched scoreless innings but were on the losing side of a 1-run game so they didn’t earn any holds for their hard work.

The best of the rest…

  • Tyler Holton opened for five innings of Kenta Maeda and Holton’s first inning was the highlight of the game for the Tigers as Maeda got tagged for six earned runs before Joey Wentz came in and gave up four more. The Tigers bullpen is definitely one to avoid with relievers alternating between opening and late innings work, with wins, holds, and saves few and far between.
  • Ryan Yarbrough earned his fifth win as the bulk reliever for Toronto, throwing five innings of shutout ball, allowing three hits and striking out four. Ryan Burr was the opener in this one, escaping the first inning without allowing a run despite allowing two hits and a walk.
  • Baltimore got 3.1 scoreless innings of relief from their bullpen thanks to Matt Bowman, Nick Vespi, and Gregory Soto! Unfortunately, it was in a losing effort since Corbin Burnes allowed six runs in his 5.2 innings of work.
  • Danny YoungReed Garrett, and Phil Maton all earned holds for their work in… holding onto the win (I mean, it’s what they did!).
