Boston Red Sox Top Dynasty Prospects-September Edition

Two pitching promotions highlight a busy month for the Red Sox

The division reports debuted last year. The goal of this article series is to provide a quick overview of all dynasty-relevant information from each division. Each team has multiple minor league levels, each containing plenty of impactful prospects which can feel impossible to keep up with. This article series, which will be updated once per month, will help dynasty managers stay up-to-date on performances, injuries, promotions, and more. New this season is the inclusion of tiers in the rankings. Next to their rank, each prospect is assigned a tier. The tier range is 1-5.

  • Tier 1: A potential difference-making dynasty prospect. Somebody who would rank in the top-20ish prospects for dynasty baseball
  • Tier 2: A still very good dynasty prospect who holds plenty of value. This prospect would typically rank in the 21-75 range
  • Tier 3: A mid-tier prospect who could be valuable but has questions and concerns present in his profile ranking in the 76-150 range
  • Tier 4: A prospect who is worth knowing, but is reserved for deeper leagues. This prospect would rank 151-250
  • Tier 5: The rest of the prospects fall into Tier 5

The Boston Red Sox are chock full of high-end talent. With two Top 10 overall prospects and several more Top 100 players, the Sox have rapidly ascended as one of the strongest systems in the game. Here is a look at their top prospects and other news in their organization.

Notable Prospect Promotions and News

  • The Red Sox promoted top pitching prospect Peyton Tolle to AAA on August 8th and then again to the Majors on August 29th. Tolle made exactly three starts for the Woo Sox,  going 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA and 17 strikeouts against two walks. His ERA was heavily skewed by a 5ER outing in his first start, highlighted by a Grand Slam. However, his final two starts were 10 innings of one-run ball with 14 strikeouts. Tolle debuted with the Sox last Friday, tossing 5 1/3 very impressive innings versus Paul Skenes and the Pirates. In the outing, the hefty lefty allowed two earned runs and two walks while striking out eight Pirate hitters. Following the game, manager Alex Cora said Tolle will stick in the rotation moving forward.
  • Tolle wasn’t the only top prospect getting the bump in August as the Red Sox updated their Password and promoted Jhostynxon Garcia on August 22nd. The man with the best name in baseball was performing well at Triple-A following his promotion to that level earlier this year. In 69 games, the Password was batting .293 with 17 homers, 12 doubles, and a .903 OPS. Garcia was added as insurance when Wilyer Abreu hit the IL, but played sparingly with the Sox. He had just one hit in seven at-bats and was optioned back to AAA as the corresponding move to add Tolle. With the call-ups of Garcia and Tolle, the Red Sox have now promoted five of their top seven organizational prospects this season.
  • The pitching-starved Red Sox made an intriguing move as hard-throwing David Sandlin moved to the bullpen in early August with an eye on possibly helping the big league club down the stretch. The 24-year-old was acquired from the Royals for John Schreiber in 2023. Since joining the bullpen, things have not gone well. Sandlin had a 7.31 ERA in 16 innings during August, allowing 13 ER in ten appearances. Given his struggles, it’s unlikely Sandlin joins the Sox this season in a relief role and could be stretched back out as a starter in the Spring.

Notable Prospect Performances

  • If you’re going to promote prospects, you’ll need a few new guys to step up, and that’s what Justin Gonzales has done. The 18-year-old was recently promoted to High-A, but just before that, he was a star for Class A Salem. In 25 August games, Gonzales slashed .304/.363/.451 with two homers, two steals, and nine doubles. His strong month raises his season-long line to .284/.363/.398 with four homers, 23 doubles, two triples, and 12 steals. Despite an aggressive approach, he’s walking nearly 10% of the time while maintaining a K-rate below 16% and an overall contact rate of 77%. Gonzales has been one of the fastest risers this season and has vaulted into the Top 10 organizational prospects.
