Notes

Transactions and Schedule

  • Only 10 games were scheduled for Monday so many bullpens will earn a rest after the weekend series. There were six saves registered across the 10 games with two closer wins also – Edwin Diaz for the Mets and Josh Hader for the Astros.
  • The Kansas City Royals activated high-leverage arm John Schreiber from the injured list and he immediately logged his second save of the season. Schreiber could see the opportunities over the recently acquired Lucas Erceg.

Yesterday’s Performances

SEA 0 – LAD 3

HD: Joe Kelly (13)

SV: Evan Phillips (16)

  • After the entire backend of the Dodgers bullpen pitched the day before, it was Evan Phillips who got the nod to face the top of the dangerous Mariners lineup. Phillips struck out Randy Arozarena in between two flyouts for his 16th save of the season, however, it is worth noting that it was his first since July 23. Daniel Hudson has seen more regular save looks over the past month but that doesn’t seem worth much right now as the Dodgers closer situation remains a fantasy headache.

CWS 3 – SFG 5

HD: Tyler Rogers (26)

SV: Jordan Hicks (1)

  • On his seventh relief appearance since being ousted from the Giants rotation, Jordan Hicks earned his first save of the season. Hicks, whose season started so promisingly, will hope this is a season renaissance despite allowing two baserunners to make it interesting. Tyler Rogers has been sensational over the past month and he registered his 26th hold of 2024. Impressive.

MIN 3 – SDP 5

HD: Jason Adam (21), Tanner Scott (6)

SV: Robert Suarez (28)

  • An impressive season for Robert Suarez continued with his 28th save of the season. It wasn’t as accomplished as he would have hoped as he allowed a two-out walk and then a run on a Christian Vázquez hit. It is the third time in the last five games he has allowed a run despite earning four saves in the same time. Adam and Scott both pitched perfect frames in setup roles with Adam striking out all three batters he faced.

TBR 0 – OAK 3

HD: Grant Holman (2), Tyler Ferguson (4)

SV: Mason Miller (19)

  • Showing no signs of impingement from his time on the injured list, A’s majestic young closer Mason Miller continues to dazzle in the spotlight. Miller struck out one and did not allow a hit to earn his 19th save of the campaign. Since returning from the IL, he has gone 7-for-7 in save chances, boasting a lovely 23:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 16 frames. Elite!

LAA 3 – KCR 5

HD: Kris Bubic (2)

SV: John Schreiber (2)

  • John Schreiber’s last save came against the Angels on May 10 so it was fitting that his second also came against the hapless Anaheim outfit in his first appearance back from the injured list. Schreiber gave up a single to Logan O’Hoppe but then induced a double-play ball to make things less tense. The former Red Sox veteran will look to build on more opportunities in an opportunistic situation in Kansas City.

PIT 3 – TEX 4

SV: Kirby Yates (22)

  • Bouncing back from a blown save and a loss across two outings over the weekend, Kirby Yates struck out Ji Hwan Bae and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to earn his 22nd save of the campaign. Yates didn’t allow a hit or a walk in what would have been a personal relief. The veteran closer is still locked into the ninth for the underperforming Rangers.

The best of the rest…

  • Edwin Diaz struck out one and pitched a perfect ninth before benefitting from Francisco Alvarez’s walk-off homer off Seranthony Domínguez in the Mets’ narrow 4-3 win over Baltimore at Citi Field.  José Buttó continued his ascension in a setup role, handling the eighth inning with aplomb.
  • A Yainer Diaz homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the Astros a narrow 5-4 walk-off win over the Red Sox with Kenley Jansen taking the loss and Josh Hader earning his sixth win of the year after a clean top of the frame.
  • The Reds emptied their bullpen protecting a four-run lead going into the final three frames. Five relievers combined to allow just one run after rookie starter Julian Aguiar only went four frames. The Reds held on to win 6-3 despite closer Alexis Díaz giving up a solo homer in the ninth.
  • The Diamondbacks rolled out the high-leverage crew against the Marlins with former closer Paul Sewald giving up two runs on three hits while protecting a five-run lead in the ninth. Sewald gave up a single and two doubles and just about escaped a messy outing.

Would Hosge be a “must add” in a saves and holds league with Neris DFAd?
