Notes

Transactions and Schedule

  • All teams were supposed to be in play yesterday, but the weather had some other ideas. There are set to be dangerous hurricane-level storms in the southeast of the country in the next two days, and the Braves and Mets have already had to postpone their game for today, as well as last night’s contest. This sets up a doubleheader on Monday to determine the final outcome of the season and the National League Wild Card seedings before one or maybe both teams have to fly to their opponent’s location for a playoff game on Tuesday.
  • Thursday is the final getaway day of the season! We have truly made it to the end. If you are still in your league finals, good luck!
  • The Yankees recalled Cody Poteet in replacement of the injured Nestor Cortes, and Poteet pitched 3.1 innings of bulk relief in the loss to the Orioles yesterday, allowing one run.
  • We’ll focus on the games that have direct postseason relevance for the main performances today.

Yesterday’s Performances
BAL 9 – NYY 7
SV: Keegan Akin (1)
  • The Orioles were up 8-3 after the fourth inning in this one, with Marcus Stroman having given up 10 hits through 10 outs when he was pulled in the fourth, surrendering six runs. Clayton Beeter gave up another two before the frame ended.
  • Baltimore had a big lead and used all but their high-leverage arms in the contest to hold it, they even made it 9-3 in the eighth. However, the Yankees scored four runs off Matt Bowman in the bottom of the ninth to cut it to 9-7.
  • With one out in the frame, the bases empty, and Seranthony Domínguez having pitched Tuesday; Keegan Akin came in and retired both of the next two Yankees to earn the save. It was his first of the year.

LAD 4 – SDP 3

W: Alex Vesia (5-4)

L: Jeremiah Estrada (6-3)

SV: Michael Kopech (15)

HD: Evan Phillips (9), Blake Treinen (15)

  • The scoring ended after the sixth inning in this contest, always a positive sign when discussing relief pitchers. The issue was that when Jeremiah Estrada came into the game in the sixth, he allowed back-to-back walks to open the inning and then a single to Shohei Ohtani which would drive in the game-winning run.
  • From there the Dodgers bullpen took over, allowing no hits after the departure of starter, Jack FlahertyEvan Phillips and Blake Treinen each picked up a hold in a 1-2-3 inning, neither requiring more than 10 pitches!
  • Then Michael Kopech came in and allowed just a walk en route to his 15th save, he threw 8 of his 14 pitches for strikes.

The Best of the Rest…

  • Emmanuel Clase got save number 47 on the season in a big win for the Guardians as they moved just a half-game behind the Yankees for the best record in the American League. He did give up a hit-and-walk two, so not great for a WHIP category, but no runs allowed and ultimately got the job done. It has been a season for the record books for Clase.
  • Ryan Helsley kept his one-save lead at 48 with a Cardinals three-run of 5-2 over the Rockies. Helsley came in with one out after a Brenton Doyle home run to make it a save scenario and needed just one pitch to get the save. Will he be able to make a push for 50 saves? The odds are against him, but there’s probably still a decent chance with four games to go.
  • The Royals got a big win over the Nationals to stay in running for the American League Wild Card. Lucas Erceg picked up save number 13 and has kept opponents scoreless in six of his last seven appearances after a rough patch towards the end of last month.
