Notes

Transactions and Schedule

  • The Nationals reinstated Derek Law from the 15-day injured list in the only reliever transaction on note on Monday. Law was on pace for 100 innings of relief before hitting the IL with an elbow strain. Still, the trusty reliever has picked up seven wins and boasts a 2.85 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 61 strikeouts on the season. A terrific effort.

Yesterday’s Performances

CLE 4 – KCR 2

SV: Emmanuel Clase (41)

HD: Cade Smith (23)

  • Without striking out a batter (again!), Emmanuel Clase pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his 41st save of the season. He is inevitable. He has allowed just five earned runs all season and holds a phenomenal 0.70 ERA and 0.76 WHIP so far in 2024. Elite! Shoutout to rookie Cade Smith, who moves to 88 strikeouts with six wins, 23 holds, and a save despite allowing a run.

DET 0 – SDP 3

SV: Robert Suarez (31)

HD: Tanner Scott (7), Jason Adam (23)

  • Back-to-back relief appearance for the excellent Robert Suarez, who needed just eight pitches to earn his 31st save of the campaign. The Padres closer allowed a lead-off single to Colt Keith but immediately forced a double-play before ending the inning to assert his dominance. He is six-for-six in recent save opportunities.

MIN 5 – TBR 4

W: Jorge Alcala (4-3)

SV: Jhoan Duran (21)

HD: Griffin Jax (22), Cole Sands (5), Ronny Henriquez (1)

  • Another closer who was called upon for the second straight day was Jhoan Duran, who threw his first clean inning for a few weeks to earn his 21st save of the season. Griffin Jax was once again solid in a setup role. There has been a bit of fluidity between Duran and Jax this season but that seems to have waned with Duran being now locked into the ninth inning.

BOS 1 – NYM 4

SV: Phil Maton (3)

HD: Danny Young (5)

  • After closer Edwin Diaz had pitched four times in five days coming into Monday’s contest with the Red Sox, the Mets looked elsewhere to protect a three-run lead in the ninth inning. Phil Maton, who has pitched to a 1.77 ERA since coming to New York from the Rays, earned this save opportunity and did not disappoint, striking out Masataka Yoshida and Mickey Gasper with aplomb.

PIT 5 – CHC 3

W: Jalen Beeks (7-4)

SV: Dennis Santana (3)

HD: Aroldis Chapman (22)

  • Opportunity knocks for Dennis Santana with regular closer David Bednar being demoted and the Pirates still preferring Aroldis Chapman in a setup role. The journeyman reliever retired the Cubs in order on 13 pitches to secure his third save of the season and his first with the Pirates as his other two came with the Yankees earlier in the year.

HOU 3 – CIN 5

W: Carson Spiers (5-5)

SV: Justin Wilson (2)

HD: Emilio Pagán (6)

  • Justin Wilson with a one-out save that helped absolutely no fantasy manager at all. Wilson was called upon to face Yordan Alvarez after Emilio Pagán handled the first two hitters in the ninth but left a baserunner on third. Pagan had worked the eighth also. Wilson saw Alvarez smash a liner drive to center field, luckily it was straight to the fielder.

The best of the rest…

  • The Brewers jumped on low-level reliever Riley O’Brien in the sixth inning as Jackson Chourio hit a grand slam to put Milwaukee ahead 9-3. That was the score of the game when finished.
  • The Dodgers used five relievers despite Jack Flaherty working five and two third innings of quality pitching in an 11-6 win over the Diamondbacks. Alex Vesia picked up his 12th hold of the year.
  • The Yankees bullpen gave up three of the four runs in an 8-4 win over the Rangers. Closer Clay Holmes came in to handle the final two outs. Chase Anderson pitched four innings in relief for the Rangers.
  • Cole Irvin picked up a three-inning save in the Orioles’ 13-3 demolition of the hapless White Sox.
  • Tyler Ferguson struck out the side in a tied ballgame in the top of the ninth before watching the A’s walk it off in the bottom of the inning against the Mariners – Shea Langeliers took Austin Voth deep on a full count.
