Notes

Transactions and Schedule

  • The high-flying Twins welcomed back handy reliever Steven Okert from the bereavement list. Randy Dobnak headed back to Triple-A in the corresponding move.
  • Atlanta once again lost A.J. Minter to the injured list with a hip issue. Lefty Dylan Lee has been recalled in a like-for-like swap.

Yesterday’s Performances

CHC 8 – CLE 9

W: Nick Sandlin (7-0)

L: Julian Merryweather (1-1)

HD: Peter Strzelecki (1)

SV: Emmanuel Clase (36)

  • A perfect ninth inning from closer Emmanuel Clase ensured the Guardians came away with a narrow win after the Cubs showed some fight late in the game. However, protecting a one-run lead, Clase was superb, striking out two and not allowing a baserunner. He now boasts a ridiculous 0.65 ERA and 0.65 WHIP through 55.1 innings. Veteran Nick Sandlin is enjoying the benefits of the setup role behind Clase, he now moves to 7-0 on the year with 52 strikeouts in just 42.1 innings.

LAD 5 – MIL 2

HD: Alex Vesia (9), Michael Kopech (4)

SV: Daniel Hudson (9)

  • Another impressive night for Daniel Hudson, who earned his ninth save of the season and has now handled the last two save opportunities for the Dodgers. With Michael Kopech establishing himself as a setup man with aplomb, Hudson looks most likely to run with the hot hand. Not sure I’d be calling on him in the playoffs, however.

TOR 4 – LAA 2

HD: Génesis Cabrera (7), Zach Pop (10)

SV: Chad Green (12)

  • Called on to protect a three-run lead in the ninth inning, closer Chad Green immediately surrendered a long ball to Jo Adell to make it a little more interesting. He settled down nicely, however, and retired the next three hitters with ease to earn his 12th save of the year. Green has now tied for the lead in saves in the month of August with five.

COL 4 – ARI 5

HD: Ryan Thompson (22)

SV: Justin Martinez (3)

  • Another hold for premier SV+H league favorite Ryan Thompson was sure to put a smile on many fantasy managers to start the week. Thompson has been a fantasy gem in 2024 and I for one am happy to have him. Justin Martinez once again handled the save opportunity and has now extended his scoreless streak to seven outings by notching his third save in his past four appearances. He’s the man for the Diamondbacks right now.

PIT 1 – SDP 2

W: Jeremiah Estrada (4-2)

HD: Tanner Scott (4)

SV: Robert Suarez (26)

  • Despite allowing two singles and coughing up a run, Robert Suarez escaped with his 26th save of the season. The Padres closer has enjoyed cleaner outings but he won’t mind too much as the Padres keep pace.

ATL 1 – SFG 0 (F/10)

W: Raisel Iglesias (2-1)

L: Taylor Rogers (1-4)

  • A cheeky vulture of a win for Raisel Iglesias to please his fantasy overlords. After pitching a clean ninth frame, he came back out for the bottom of the 10th and made light work of the Giants to shut them out.

The best of the rest

  • Jakob Junis shut out the Cardinals after Andrew Abbott’s excellent six and two-thirds innings in the Reds’ 6-1 win. Junis struck out three across the remaining 2.1 frames and did not allow a baserunner
  • Two perfect frames from Kaleb Ort saw the Astros home in a comfortable 6-1 win over the Rays. The Astros allowed just four hits and one free pass in a dominant pitching showing – Framber Valdez was sensational.
  • Tied 3-3 going into extra innings, the Rangers managed to score the zombie runner in the top of the inning but a Rob Refsnyder single off rookie Walter Pennington with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the inning walked it off for the Red Sox.
  • Griffin Jax picked up his 19th hold of the season after coming out of the bullpen first in the seventh inning in relief of starter Pablo López. Jax was chosen to protect a three-run lead with the top of the Royals order up. The Twins ran out 8-3 winners.
  • The hapless White Sox jumped on Enyel De Los Santos late to tag him for seven earned runs on eight hits. Most of the damage came in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Yankees already trailing 5-2. Protecting the bullpen became the order of the day.
