Notes

Transactions and Schedule

  • A double double-header day meant 17 games on Wednesday and plenty of bullpen action. Thursday is a bit lighter with 10 games including four with early start times.
  • Brusdar Graterol was placed on the IL with a hamstring strain following his season debut.
  • The Red Sox activated Chris Martin, he is 2-1 and has 10 holds in 27 appearances this season, they optioned Cam Booser to Worcester.
  • Mason Miller was officially activated by the Oakland A’s.
Yesterday’s Performances

NYY 5 – LAA 2

SV: Clay Holmes (24)

HD: Luke Weaver (18)

  • In the first game of the doubleheader, the Yankees put up five early runs on Davis Daniel and turned to the bullpen after five innings of work from Luis Gil.
  • New York opted to go with Enyel De Los Santos for the sixth and Jake Cousins for the seventh while working a lead larger than three runs and a second game to come later in the evening. Both struggled, they each allowed multiple base runners and a run – making the score 5-2 entering the eighth inning.
  • Luke Weaver and Clay Holmes closed out the game in the eighth and ninth without allowing a base runner and striking out two each. Six up, six down for the hold and the save.
  • The Angels bullpen did well to not let any runs in but surrendered five walks in 4.2 innings of work. Matt Moore pitched the seventh and eighth innings without allowing a hit, he got six contact outs while also intentionally walking Aaron Judge.

HOU 6 – TEX 4

SV: Josh Hader (24)

HD: Bryan Abreu (27), Ryan Pressly (20)

  • The Astros lead this game from start to finish, scoring two early runs on Jose Urena and then adding another three on against José Leclerc through the sixth inning to take a 5-0 lead.
  • The Rangers answered with three runs of their own in the sixth, scored on a combination of starter Yusei Kikuchi and Tayler Scott.
  • From there, the top options out of the Astros ‘pen took over. Bryan Abreu finished the sixth and handled the seventh effectively as well. Ryan Pressly struggled a bit, surrendering a run on three hits allowed – but the Astros had extended the lead to three by that time, so it wasn’t as consequential to return to a two-run game.
  • Finally, Josh Hader saw his third appearance in three days – throwing in each of the games against Houston’s in-state rival. He had only thrown nine pitches to get the final out on Tuesday, so throwing another 11 here wasn’t too taxing. He struck out one in a clean inning and will appreciate his team’s day off tomorrow.

OAK 3 – CWS 2

SV: Mason Miller (16)

HD: Tyler Ferguson (2), Touki Toussaint (2)

BS: Dominic Leone (3)

W: T.J. McFarland (2-1)

L: Touki Toussaint (0-2)

  • I think this is the first ever hold, loss combo I’ve ever encountered in the wild. Here’s how it happened… the White Sox were leading the game 2-0 after a phenomenal start by Davis Martin, six scoreless innings with just three baserunners allowed. They called in Touki Toussaint in what was a hold situation, he allowed one run on three hits before being replaced.
  • Dominic Leone comes in with the two inherited runners, just one out and allowed a single and sacrifice fly to let both the Toussaint runners score. So he blew the save and Touki took the loss while still getting the hold because he left the game with his team still in the lead.
  • Nonetheless, from there the A’s bullpen took over and locked in the win behind McFarland, who struck out two, and Mason Miller, who was fresh off the injured list. All four of the flamethrower’s final pitches eclipsed 100 mph, it’s good to have him back!

SFG 7 – WSH 4

SV: Camilo Doval (22)

HD: Ryan Walker (20), Tyler Rogers (24)

  • The Giants poured it on Jake Irvin to the tune of five earned runs, and then added another two against Jose A. Ferrer in the sixth to make the game 7-3. Erik Miller, working in relief of Blake Snell, gave up the Nats’ fourth run which created the save situation and brought out the big dogs for the Giants.
  • Since giving up three runs in mid-July, Ryan Walker has earned two wins and five holds in his last 11 appearances, he only got one out but stranded two runners after Miller had trouble getting out of the frame.
  • Tyler Rogers strung together his fourth straight appearance without allowing a base runner, recording seven holds and two losses in his last nine appearances – he’s locked into high-leverage work.
  • Camilo Doval handled the ninth while allowing a walk and a hit, he didn’t strike out any batters but escaped unscathed.

NYM 5 – COL 3

SV: Edwin Diaz (14)

W: José Buttó (5-2)

L: Victor Vodnik (3-2)

  • The Mets and Rockies were tied at two in this one all the way through to the ninth inning. Colorado turned to newly dubbed closer, Victor Vodnik, to preserve the tie in the top half of the frame. He failed to do so, allowing three runs on a triple, two walks and then two singles before being removed so that Justin Lawrence could get the final out of the inning.
  • The damage was done, and the Mets sounded the trumpets to let Edwin Diaz work with a three-run lead. He surrendered a triple himself, which scored on a ground out, but ultimately did the job and locked in the save while striking out the other two batters he faced.

The best of the rest…

  • Ryan Helsley picked up save number 36 for the Cardinals, he allowed a walk and a hit while striking out two as the Red Birds beat the Rays 5-2. JoJo Romero and Andrew Kittredge continue to be powerhouses in holds leagues, each notching one last night.
  • The Angels bullpen made light work of the Yankees lineup the final time through the order in the second game of the doubleheader. José Quijada, Roansy Contreras, and Mike Baumann combined to only allow one base runner over the final three frames of the 8-2 win.
  • The Diamondbacks’ bullpen was on full display Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep. Six Arizona relievers notched holds across the two games and, in all, the group of eight pitchers only surrendered one earned run in six innings of work! A great sign for Arizona, as all of this came against Cleveland, the team that entered the day with the best record in baseball.
  • We had a hectic one in Pittsburgh last night, David Bednar blew the save after Jalen Beeks and Aroldis Chapman preserved a one-run lead into the ninth. Chapman was hitting 105 mph on the gun too… sheesh! With the game tied 6-6, Ranger Suárez allowed the bases to be loaded before Tanner Scott was called in to get the final out in the high-leverage spot, he did so and stranded all three runners. Scott would handle the ninth after the Padres scored three runs off of Colin Holderman, but then Scott stumbled too allowing three straight walks without an out in the 10th… told you it was hectic… eventually Adrian Morejon was summoned to finally end the game at 9-8 in favor of the Padres.
