Notes

Transactions and Schedule

  • Just over half the league was in action on Thursday, with only nine games being played.
  • Despite only nine games, there were saves in seven of them!
  • The Guardians sent James Karinchak on a rehab assignment to AAA Columbus.
  • Tyler Alexander was optioned to AAA Durham. In his place, Mason Montgomery was called up.

Yesterday’s Performances

CIN 1 – HOU 0

W: Tony Santillan (2-2)

L: Bryan Abreu (3-2)

HD: None

SV: Alexis Díaz (25)

  • Tony Santillan took home the win with 1.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter Rhett Lowder. It was Santillan’s second win of the season. Alexis Díaz followed that up with a perfect ninth for his 25th save of the season (and lowered his ERA to 4.56). It’s been a rough season for Díaz, but it’s nice to see him hit the 25-save mark despite the troubles.
  • It was a one-run game, so margins were tight, and the one run allowed by Bryan Abreu on a home run to Ty France was the difference maker in this game. Abreu was charged with his third loss of the season.

MIN 4 – TBR 3

HD: Griffin Jax (23)

SV: Jhoan Duran (22)

  • Minnesota’s 1-2 punch that sounds like a Star Wars character (Jax Duran!) held and saved a solid performance from Pablo LópezGriffin Jax earned his 23rd hold, while Jhoan Duran notched his 22nd save with a perfect two-K ninth inning.
  • Mason Montgomery got immediate action, handling the eighth inning in a close game and delivering a scoreless inning in his first career MLB appearance, while Kevin Kelly followed that with a scoreless ninth.

PIT 9 – WSN 4

HD: Carmen Mlodzinski (4)

SV: Aroldis Chapman (6)

  • Aroldis Chapman earned his second save since David Bednar was removed from the closer role last week, an efficient 2-out, 6-pitch effort. Initially, it was recent acquisition Joey Wentz (signed after he was DFA’d by the Tigers) who got the ninth. But Wentz ran into trouble, walking two batters and allowing a hit and a run allowing just enough traffic for a Chapman save opportunity. Carmen Mlodzinski earned his fourth hold of the season for his perfect work in the sixth.
  • This one trick will keep your ERA low, and managers hate it: only allow inherited runners to score! Eduardo Salazar kept his sparkling 1.18 intact, despite allowing two runners to score on Joe La Sorsa’s behalf.

TEX 3 – LAA 1

HD: José Leclerc (9), David Robertson (28)

SV: Kirby Yates (27)

  • Kirby Yates went back-to-back with saves, following up his six-pitch save from Wednesday with a 13-pitch save on Thursday. He also one-upped himself, striking out the side in Thursday’s contest. Texas’ cadre of former-closers-turned-setup-guys also delivered ahead of Yates, with José Leclerc and David Robertson both earning holds for scoreless innings. Robertson ALSO struck out the side!
  • He may be last in the bullpen rolls, but Ryan Zeferjahn was the first (and only) Angel out of the pen, and he delivered two scoreless innings of work.

DET 4 – SDP 3

W: Ricky Vanasco (1-0)

L: Robert Suarez (8-3)

BS: Robert Suarez (4)

HD: Jason Adam (24), Tanner Scott (8)

SV: Tyler Holton (7)

  • Ricky Vanasco earned his first career win with a clean eighth inning. After the Tigers went up in the ninth (more on that below), Tyler Holton got the call and took care of business to earn his seventh save of the season.
  • San Diego had their trade acquisition arms show up just like they needed them to, with Jason Adam and Tanner Scott showing up with scoreless holds, but Robert Suarez struggled and ended up giving up a grand slam to Parker MeadowsThis was Suarez’s fourth blown save of the season and third loss.

The best of the rest…

  • Ryan Walker earned the win after the Giants walked it off in the bottom of the ninth, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings while allowing no hits and one walk and striking out three.
  • Andrés Muñoz tried to make his own save situation (you’re not allowed to do that), allowing two runs in the ninth inning and turning a four-run lead into a two-run lead. Munoz had already warmed when Seattle scored two in the top of the ninth, so he still came into the game despite it no longer being a save situation. Troy Taylor, Collin Snider, and Austin Voth all earned holds in front of Muñoz.
  • The Phillies turned to Matt Strahm for the save, and he delivered a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season. Carlos Estévez had pitched the night before, but it wasn’t back-to-back, so it’s unclear if this was just trying to give him extra rest or a matchups play but it was Strahm’s second save in three days. Phillies gonna Phillie.
  • Tyler Kinley earned his ninth save of the season with a clean ninth inning. This was Kinley’s second consecutive clean save… five days apart. It’s a trap. He pitches in/for Colorado (also his previous appearance before that was a 0 IP, four-run affair).
