St Louis Cardinals Top Dynasty Prospects – July Edition

The Cardinals have their superstar, but what else is behind him?

The division reports debuted last year. The goal of this article series is to provide a quick overview of all dynasty-relevant information from each division. Each team has multiple minor league levels, each containing plenty of impactful prospects, which can feel impossible to keep up with. This article series, which will be updated once per month, will help dynasty managers stay up-to-date on performances, injuries, promotions, and more. New this season is the inclusion of tiers in the rankings. Next to their rank, each prospect is assigned a tier. The tier range is 1-5.

  • Tier 1: A potential difference-making dynasty prospect. Somebody who would rank in the top-20ish prospects for dynasty baseball
  • Tier 2: A still very good dynasty prospect who holds plenty of value. This prospect would typically rank in the 21-75 range
  • Tier 3: A mid-tier prospect who could be valuable but has questions and concerns present in his profile, ranking in the 76-150 range
  • Tier 4: A prospect who is worth knowing, but is reserved for deeper leagues. This prospect would rank 151-250
  • Tier 5: The rest of the prospects fall into Tier 5

Following the 2024 MLB Draft, the Cardinals finally have a superstar prospect headlining their rankings, JJ Wetherholt. Joining him is a plethora of talent, including a trio of catchers and one of 2024’s fastest rising prospects, Yairo Padilla! Martin digs into the future of the Cardinals.

Notable Prospect Promotions and News

  • I had a lot of fun watching video of 24-year-old outfielder Nathan Church, an 11th-round pick in 2022, who was promoted to AAA on June 3rd. Church feels like a typical Cardinals outfielder of the past. He’s 5’10” with a strong frame who plays with high energy and a continuous motor. Reminiscent of the Harrison Bader, Tyler O’Neill, and Brendan Donovan types that have patrolled the outfields for the Cardinals for the last decade. On the season, Church is batting .335 with ten homers and eleven steals and has struck out just 27 times in 236 at-bats.
  • Quinn Mathews returned to Triple-A on June 6th after missing over a month while he recovered from left shoulder soreness. The Cardinals played it very cautiously with Mathews, who has now made seven starts with no more than five innings in any of them. Command has been a significant issue in that stretch as their top prospect has walked 22 hitters in 31 1/3 innings. Given the missed time, lack of workload, and unsteady command, I’d be hard pressed to expect Mathews in the Majors anytime soon.

Notable Prospect Performances

  • JJ Wetherholt continues to fly through the Minors, dominating at every level along the way. The Top 25 overall prospect and #1 in the Cardinals system, slashed .356/.500/.521 with two homers, four doubles, six steals, and drew 19 walks in June. By comparison, he struck out just 14 times. I’m slightly disappointed that the power hasn’t arrived quite yet, but now that he’s in AAA (promoted on July 8th), we’re able to obtain some batted-ball data on him. It would not surprise me at all to see Wetherholt in the Majors by the end of 2025.
  • Tink Hence has finally started to get stretched out a bit at Double-A and was the starting pitcher on June 20th when Springfield posted a no-hitter against Corpus Christi. In that outing, Hence went 4 1/3 innings, striking out eight Hooks batters and issuing one walk. In total, Springfield whiffed 13 hitters over nine innings with four walks. It’s also worth noting that it was the very first no-hitter in the history of the Springfield Cardinals!
