Catcher News and Playing Time Changes

  • Cal Raleigh is one home run away from tying Barry Bonds’ record for most homers before the All-Star break. This man is unreal.
  • The Orioles STILL can’t catch a break as Gary Sánchez hits the injured list. Jacob Stallings is the apparent starter, with Alex Jackson backing him up. The O’s now have FOUR catchers on the IL: Sanchez, Adley Rutschman, Chadwick Tromp, and Maverick Handley. Rutschman is hitting off a tee, but likely won’t be back until the end of the month. Stallings will likely continue to start after the All-Star break.
  • Snip snap, snip snap for the Nats. Keibert Ruiz had a good two starts before heading back to the IL. Riley Adams will pick up where he left off as the starter, and Drew Millas is back at backup.
  • Henry Davis may be emerging as the first option over Joey Bart in Pittsburgh. Davis has drawn six starts to Bart’s three since the beginning of July. Davis is hitting slightly better than Bart in that span.

Streaming Options

I wouldn’t put too much stock into the projected starters above; there’s no guarantee that teams will maintain this order post-All-Star break. Since we don’t have any clear matchups to work with, I’m going to highlight some priority adds in all leagues, and some

Also, most Yahoo! leagues will roll this week into the next, but don’t forget to check if that’s the case in your league.

Iván Herrera (STL) 53% on Yahoo! – Herrera is a priority add in all leagues. He’s nearing the end of his rehab assignment and could be back on the active roster by the end of the week. Though he won’t catch much during the second half as he recovers, he should be the primary option at DH for the Cardinals. Sorry, Nolan Gorman fans (me).

Herrera has hit exceptionally well in the 42 games he’s played this season. He has a .925 OPS with eight home runs (30 home run pace). His 161 wRC+ is third among all catchers, behind Cal Raleigh and Will Smith. Herrera should recover well from his hamstring injury, but might play a little less if he’s not getting time as a catcher. He drew starts behind the plate just once or twice a week before the injury. At DH,  he may find himself on the bench in favor of lefties Alec Burleson and Gorman, depending on the matchups. Regardless, Herrera will likely be a much better bat in the second half than the likes of J.T. Realmuto, Tyler Stephenson, or any of the less-rostered catchers.

Victor Caratini (HOU) 9% on Yahoo! – Caratini is in the middle of a scorching hot streak. He holds a 1.047 OPS in July with a 176 wRC+. I don’t expect him to maintain this pace for the rest of the season, but his year so far is better than it appears. He’s slashing an unremarkable .255/.302/.431, but these numbers are skewed by one particularly poor month. Ignoring June, he’s slashing .301/.355/.485 with a 135 wRC+. Even more importantly, he’s drawing starts at multiple positions. In the Astros’ last ten games, Caratini started eight times between catcher, first, and DH. He won’t be a top-ten catcher by any means, but he’s emerging as a legitimate option in deep leagues.

Freddy Fermin (KCR) 1% on Yahoo! – Fermin has an .872 OPS since the beginning of June. His single home run since then isn’t as impressive, but he could be a sneaky option in AL-only leagues. Salvador Perez isn’t even cutting into his playing time too drastically; Fermin started in six of the Royals’ last ten games with Perez at first or DH. With nobody running away with the DH job, there’s a path to more playing time for Fermin in the anemic Royals offense. Salvy is batting .371 in July, and it would be easy to slide him over to DH to get Fermin into the lineup at catcher.
