Notes

Transactions and Schedule

  • The Yankees sent Nick Burdi and Phil Bickford outright to Triple-A, designated Anthony Misiewicz for assignment, and recalled two hitters so expect a further move to add some bullpen depth in the next day or two.
  • In sad news, the Red Sox released legendary veteran Rich Hill.

Yesterday’s Performances

CIN 1 – ATL 0

HD: Fernando Cruz (23)

SV: Alexis Díaz (27)

  • For the second straight day Reds closer Alexis Díaz comfortably handled the ninth inning to record a save. Díaz didn’t allow a hit but didn’t strike out a hitter on his way to his 27th save of the campaign. Díaz has not allowed a hit in five September outings after a somewhat rocky August.

MIA 2 – PIT 3

HD: Colin Holderman (1), Dennis Santana (5)

SV: Aroldis Chapman (7)

  • After perfect frames from Colin Holderman and Dennis Santana, closer Aroldis Chapman made things interesting in a sloppy ninth inning in which he allowed a single and a walk before Cristian Pache hit a run-scoring double to bring the Marlins within a run with two outs. Chapman bounced back, however, forcing Nick Fortes to pop up to end the game. It was Chapman’s seventh save and his third in his last five appearances. He also has a blown save in that timeframe.

NYM 3 – TOR 2

W: Ryne Stanek (7-3)

HD: Danny Young (6)

SV: Edwin Diaz (17)

  • Ryne Stanek struck out all three hitters he faced in a dominant eighth frame to pick up his seventh win of the season before Edwin Diaz closed it out despite allowing a two-out hit to induce a few nerves for the red-hot Mets. Diaz now boasts a scoreless seven-inning stretch with an impressive 14:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. This is the dominance you want from your closer at the business end of the season.

CLE 5 – CWS 3

HD: Hunter Gaddis (31)

SV: Emmanuel Clase (43)

  • Two strikeouts and a fruitless two-out single for Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, who is tied for the lead in saves across baseball with 43. Clase was again dominant as he continued his fantasy darling status despite a less-than-desirable strikeout rate. His 0.69 ERA and 0.66 WHIP more than make up for it though.

LAA 6 – MIN 2

SV: José Suarez (1)

  • We always love a cheeky three-inning save, and especially when it is José Suarez’s first of his career. After spending over two months in the minors, Suarez rejoined the Angels this week and is in line for bulk work down the stretch. This was a nice start for him.

The best of the rest…

  • Josh Winckowski earned his second bulk relief save in the last week as the Red Sox blew out the Orioles 12-3 – the Red Sox pitcher gave up a solo homer but otherwise was solid as he struck out three in as many frames.
  • Phillies closer Carlos Estévez was charged with a blown save after pinch hitter Brandon Lowe blasted a solo homer at the top of the ninth inning but Estévez was credited with the win after Kody Clemens’ walk-off single in the bottom of the inning.
  • The Royals bullpen imploded to the tune of seven runs in two innings that wiped out a one-run lead to the Yankees, who ran out 10-4 winners. James McArthur gave up a game-tying single to Aaron Judge before Austin Wells blasted a three-run homer to give the Yankees a big lead.
  • The Cubs ran all over the low-leverage arms in the Dodgers bullpen as they hit their way to a 10-4 win. Nick Ramirez and Anthony Banda gave up five runs after starter Walker Buehler struggled through five frames once again.
