Houston Astros Top Dynasty Prospects – July Edition

Houston Astros top dynasty prospects for the month of July

The division reports debuted last year. The goal of this article series is to provide a quick overview of all dynasty-relevant information from each division. Each team has multiple levels each containing plenty of impactful prospects which can feel impossible to keep up with. This article series, which will be updated once per month, will help dynasty managers stay up to date on performances, injuries, promotions, and more. New this season is the inclusion of tiers in the rankings. Next to their rank, each prospect is assigned a tier. The tier range is 1-5.

  • Tier 1: A potential difference-making dynasty prospect. Somebody who would rank in the top-20ish prospects for dynasty baseball
  • Tier 2: A still very good dynasty prospect who holds plenty of value. This prospect would typically rank in the 21-75 range
  • Tier 3: A mid-tier prospect who could be valuable but has questions and concerns present in his profile ranking in the 76-150 range
  • Tier 4: A prospect who is worth knowing, but is reserved for deeper leagues. This prospect would rank 151-250
  • Tier 5: The rest of the prospects fall into Tier 5

This article details all of the changes dynasty managers need to know on prospects from the Astros. The goal is to help dynasty managers stay updated on the latest information with in-depth looks at each specific team! Each division will come with a monthly update that readers can look forward to.

This list features prospects not currently in the Majors.

Top 10 Prospects

Notable Prospect Promotions and News

  • Jacob Melton made his MLB debut and hit .241 with a 38.7 percent strikeout rate while stealing a trio of bags in 11 games. Presumably his small sample size will grow once he returns from the IL. Since he’s on the MLB IL, he isn’t included on this list, though he would rank near the top if he were.
  • After returning from a delayed start to the season, Jose Fleury pitched very well in Double-A and was promoted just before this was written. Prior to the promotion he posted a 1.82 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 39.2 innings. Early on he hit six innings regularly, but in his recent stretch of games he hasn’t surpassed four. Fleury is aiming to join the Astros sooner than later, but his role might not be very clear when he does.

Notable Prospect Performances

  • Astros top prospect Brice Matthews would be sitting in that spot even if Jacob Melton were healthy. He’s been on a tear for most the season, highlighted by hitting .306 in June with 13 extra base hits, including four homers, and seven steals. Matthews has reached double digit home runs and steals for the second straight season, while bringing his strikeout rate under 30 percent. The whiffs will likely remain part of his game, but he’s doing everything he can to prove he deserves a promotion to Houston. If he can show the power and speed at the next level, he’ll become a very intriguing fantasy asset.

  • In the first month of DSL play Kevin Alvarez introduced himself in a big way by hitting .317 with a pair of homers and steals. The 17-year-old outfielder has a great frame that suggests more power. Alvarez came in with high marks for his ability to swing at good pitches and control the zone, which he put on display with a 10 percent strikeout rate and 7.1 percent walk rate. There was already hype, but if he continues hitting the ball like this it will only continue to grow.
