Transactions and Schedule

    • Only half the league played on Thursday.
    • Despite that, there was a save in six of the eight games.
    • Joe Kelly started a rehab assignment in AAA Oklahoma City.

Yesterday’s Performances

COL 4 – DET 2

W: Seth Halvorsen (1-0)

L: Jason Foley (3-6)

BS: Sean Guenther (1)

HD: Brenan Hanifee (4)

SV: Tyler Kinley (12)

  • Ryan Feltner dueled with Tarik Skubalgoing 5.2 strong innings before giving way to the bullpen. From there, the bullpen delivered 3.1 scoreless innings. Seth Halvorsen earned his first win of the season with a perfect eighth inning and then gave way to Tyler Kinley in the ninth, who earned his 12th save despite allowing some traffic on the basepaths. Victor Vodnik also made a scoreless appearance in the seventh.
  • Tarik Skubal left with a lead after six innings due to a comebacker off his glove hand, so the bullpen got a slightly early start. Unfortunately, they couldn’t hold onto the win for Skubal. Brenan Hanifee was first out of the pen, and he did earn a hold despite being charged with the tying run since it was an inherited run that Sean Guenther allowed to score. Guenther was charged with the blown save as a result of that inherited run.

STL 6 – CIN 1

L: Carson Spiers (5-6)

HD: Andrew Kittredge (33)

SV: JoJo Romero (1)

  • St. Louis deployed two of their top relievers to cover three innings in support of a fantastic Sonny Gray start. Andrew Kittredge earned his 33rd hold of the season with 1.2 scoreless innings and JoJo Romero earned the save, his first of the season, with 1.1 scoreless innings. It was the second straight day of appearances for both and it’s unclear why Ryan Helsley didn’t get the save opportunity. Helsley had also pitched yesterday, but it was only eight pitches. The safe bet is that the Cardinals just wanted to take it easy on their closer.
  • Carson Spiers took home his sixth loss of the season pitching in long relief. Spiers allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.

TBR 5 – CLE 2

W: Cole Sulser (1-0)

HD: Mason Montgomery (1), Garrett Cleavinger (13), Manuel Rodríguez (8)

SV: Richard Lovelady (2)

  • Starter Ryan Pepiot left after two innings, apparently due to manager’s decision, so the Rays bullpen got some extra work and delivered. Cole Sulser pitched three scoreless innings with nary a hit and four Ks for his first win of the season. Mason Montgomery handled duties in the sixth and threw a perfect two-K inning for his first hold of the season, and his MLB career. Garrett Cleavinger and Manuel Rodríguez also earned holds ahead of Richard Loveladywho notched his second save of the season.
  • All of Cleveland’s high-leverage arms had been overworked as of late, so it fell to the middle and long-inning guys to keep the game close. Erik Sabrowski kept things scoreless in his 1.1 innings of work, but Pedro Avila and Andrew Walters both allowed a run, although Walters’ was unearned.

TEX 5 – SEA 4

W: Matt Festa (4-1)

L: Collin Snider (3-3)

BS: Collin Snider (1)

HD: David Robertson (31), Troy Tayler (4)

SV: Kirby Yates (30)

  • Matt Festa earned his fourth win of the season with a scoreless seventh inning, and was the first reliever not to allow a run in the game after Gerson Garabito and Andrew Chafin couldn’t keep the Mariners off the scoreboard. David Robertson followed Festa with another scoreless inning, securing his 31st hold of the season before Kirby Yates handled things in the ninth to hit the 30-save plateau.
  • Troy Tayler earned his fourth hold, his second in as many days, despite allowing an earned run. But Collin Sniderwho also had a hold yesterday, couldn’t match the feat. Snider allowed three runs, one earned, in 2/3 of an inning and was charged with his first blown save of the season, and his third loss.

MIL 3 – SFG 0

L: Camilo Doval (5-2)

HD: Aaron Ashby (1), Trevor Megill (5)

SV: Devin Williams (11)

  • Aaron Ashby earned his first hold of the season, reaching his quota for the season. Ashby has exactly one hold in each of his three MLB seasons, so if he logs any more down the stretch, he’ll be setting career highs! In all seriousness, Ashby has yet to allow a run since being called up in late August, sporting a 0.00 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 12 innings, while striking out 15. After Ashby, Trevor Megill took home his fifth hold after striking out the side to set up Devin Williams for his 11th save. Williams did allow two hits, but he also struck out two to keep things scoreless.
  • Coming in for the seventh inning in a scoreless game, Camilo Doval had a chance to earn some goodwill with some high-leverage work. It was not to be as he allowed a run to score despite not allowing any hits. One walk and three(!) wild pitches later, and the Brewers took the lead. Doval was charged with the loss, his second of the season.

The best of the rest…

  • Clay Holmes earned his thirdwin of the season in extra innings a day after being charged with a blown save, throwing 2/3 scoreless innings.
  • The Astros earned the win, but the bullpen decided they’d like to make it interesting in the process. Bryan Abreu earned his 35th hold before Ryan Pressly came on and was charged with his eighth blown save of the season, but also his second win of the season after the offense answered back. Josh Hader then came in for the non-save and allowed a run.
  • Jesús Tinoco earned his first save of the season with two perfect innings, striking out two batters.

Hey man just curious, is the angels closer really Brock Burke now that Ben Joyce is injured? It wouldn’t be most likely Strickland? Also, would that closer ranking for them at 15 be correct?
