Cade Smith, Bryan Abreu, Enyel De Los Santos, Hunter Gaddis, Yoendrys Gómez, Tim Herrin, Jeff Hoffman, Bryan King, and Richard Lovelady each had three SV+HLD’s over the past week, with Smith picking up four. Let’s talk about Abreu, who has been getting some high-leverage work again and has not allowed a run in May yet. The fastball velocity is still hovering around 94 MPH (typically sits 97+ MPH), he still has a 0% K-BB rate for the month, as well as a 5.98 xFIP and a swinging strike rate under 10%. His 93 Stuff+ in May ranks 173rd out of 200 qualified relievers (the slider is doing the heavy lifting with that Stuff+ grade).

| Setup Role | Juan Morillo | 10% |
| Setup Role | Taylor Clarke | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Kevin Ginkel | 5% |
- Juan Morillo has totalled just 2.2 innings since May 8th, and they haven’t exactly been good innings either. He got some time off in between to deal with a fatigue issue, so that is something to monitor moving forward.

| Co-Closer | Hogan Harris | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Scott Barlow | 15% |
| Co-Closer | Joel Kuhnel | 15% |
- Hogan Harris continues to factor into SV+HLD’s (12 now) despite the volatility. His WHIP on the season stands at 1.73, and over the past month, it’s at 2.22 with an ERA of 4.00. I know the A’s lack trustworthy bullpen options, but I think they can do better than Harris (maybe?).
- Jack Perkins is out of the closer role and may not get a chance to get back into that mix, but I’m still not totally out on him yet. He looked great yesterday, throwing almost five innings out of the pen, and maybe he finds his way back into the rotation?

| Setup Role | Robert Suarez | 20% |

| Middle Relief | Tyler Kinley | <5% |
- Robert Suarez has been OK this season, and the ratios certainly don’t hurt, but I was expecting more in the bat-missing department. 23% K and 25% CSW rates don’t exactly scream elite stuff, and the velocity has been down the past five games.
- Dylan Dodd is back with the MLB club and should be there to stay, as he broke out with them in the second half of last season and has looked great so far in 2026. Another strong week could have him skyrocketing up the holds list.

- Grant Wolfram is back from the IL, and that’s a huge relief, as the other lefties in this bullpen have struggled for the most part. The ratios are inflated due to a .500 BABIP, but the stuff is legit, and his 30.8% K-BB rate is fourth best amongst relievers with 10+ innings pitched.

- Jacob Webb has just flat-out been outpitching Phil Maton at this point and deserves to be the top setup option here. Over the past month, Webb holds a 1.38 ERA (2.11 SIERA), 0.85 WHIP, plus 31.4% K and 18.6% SwStr rates.

- Grant Taylor has put together a solid month and even had some thinking he was going to supplant Seranthony Domínguez from the closer role (it probably will happen eventually). His velocity has been down over the past month, but when you go from 99 to 97.7 MPH, it’s not a huge deal. He’s been better with the velo dip, actually.
First 9 IP (99 MPH): 5.00 ERA (1.93 xFIP), 1.67 WHIP with a 38.1% K rate.
Last 12.2 IP (97.7 MPH): 1.42 ERA (2.62 xFIP), 1.26 WHIP, 33.3% K rate.

- Graham Ashcraft has been rocky, but I think he may get a third chance to nail down the closer role, because, quite frankly, what alternatives do they have? Johnson, Antone, Santillan, and Burke should be out of the mix, so that leaves Ashcraft, Sam Moll?, and newly reinstated Caleb Ferguson. Maybe Ferguson can be an X factor here, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

- Colin Holderman over the past month: 0.59 ERA (2.17 SIERA), 0.65 WHIP, with 32.1% K and 32% CSW rates. With no Sabrowski for a while, Holderman should live up to his name for the foreseeable future. I don’t see any glaring change in his profile to suggest this will stick, but ride it while he’s pitching well.

- After a rough couple of outings from Juan Mejia, I think we are down to Antonio Senzatela as the only reliever we can trust here for the time being. I’m not so sure how much I trust Senzatela, who holds an ugly 5.04 xFIP, with 6% K-BB and 26.5% CSW rates over his past 17.2 innings. Feels like a ticking time bomb.

- Kenley Jansen had a brutal meltdown on Sunday, and it serves as a reminder that he will give you that now and then at this stage of his career. The good news for him is that Kyle Finnegan looks terrible, but I do think Will Vest has looked a lot better since coming off the IL, and perhaps he could end up being a threat to Jansen at some point.

| Closer | Josh Hader (IL) | 60% |
| Setup Role | Bryan King | 20% |
| Setup Role | Bryan Abreu | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Enyel De Los Santos | 5% |
- Enyel De Los Santos may not be great, but he at least is keeping his walk rate low and giving the Astros something from the right side out of the bullpen. Nate Pearson has only made two appearances so far, but he’s looked great in both, so between De Los Santos and Pearson, there is some hope that the Astros can find quality right-handed relief moving forward.

| Closer | Lucas Erceg | 50% |
| Setup Role | Daniel Lynch IV | 25% |
| Setup Role | Matt Strahm (IL) | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Nick Mears | 5% |
- Lucas Erceg has given up five earned runs over the past two days, but will that be enough to remove him from the closer role? The issue is their best reliever, Daniel Lynch IV, has been vulnerable this past month with a 1.22 WHIP. Still a lot better than Erceg, but this bullpen may just want to go the way of the Twins, A’s, and Nationals and give up trying to have a sole closer when that guy doesn’t exist on your roster.

| Co-Closer | Ryan Zeferjahn | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Kirby Yates | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Chase Silseth | 10% |
- I know Kirby Yates has veteran status on Sam Bachman, and the Angels seldom make the correct decisions, but Bachman should be the team’s closer now and moving forward. Yates fastball has fallen off a cliff. Ryan Zeferjahn has the stuff in his favor, but he can not command it consistently, which was a problem Bachman had earlier in the year, but lately he has been filling up the zone. He has three plus pitches and closer stuff, and just feels like a no-brainer in the closer role.

- Michael Peteresen is one of the more volatile relievers out there, but there is no denying how nasty the stuff is when he is on and even remotely commanding it. The Marlins are trusting the “stuff” dudes in this bullpen with Petersen and Andrew Nardi continuing to see hold chances, and I love the commitment to them because if they truly figure things out, this bullpen could be one of the best in baseball.

- Right after Trevor Megill picked up a save over Abner Uribe two weeks ago, the roles reversed this past week. We haven’t seen enough save chances the past week to determine roles, but Megill has been outpitching Uribe lately, so I’m still leaning towards him as the favorite.

| Setup Role | Erik Miller | 20% |
| Setup Role | Keaton Winn | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Joel Peguero | 10% |
- Caleb Kilian remains inconsistent, but he’s still the preferred reliever to roster in this bullpen, as Erik Miller is still struggling with his command, and Keaton Winn doesn’t seem like a realistic threat to the team or me. Winn has great ratios, but just a 4.2% K-BB rate over the past month, with the swinging strike rate dipping below 10%.

- Matt Brash returned from the IL this past week, and the stuff looks great as his sinker is sitting in the mid-97 MPH range, and we even got three strikeouts so far as he was struggling to generate swing and miss prior to the IL stint.
- Just as José A. Ferrer was getting comfortable in a setup role, we have Gabe Speier returning from the IL today. I think Ferrer’s role is safe, but at least this allows the team to give Ferrer some occasional rest.

| Closer | Riley O’Brien | 70% |
| Setup Role | JoJo Romero | 15% |
| Setup Role | Ryne Stanek | 5% |
| Middle Relief | George Soriano | 5% |
- Riley O’Brien hadn’t walked anyone or even allowed an earned run until about a month ago on April 25th. Since then (11 IP), O’Brien holds a 6.55 ERA and 1.64 WHIP with just 15% K-BB and 26% CSW rates. That looks worrisome, but honestly, I’m not terribly concerned for two reasons. The first being, there’s no competition behind him outside of maybe JoJo Romero, who is also their only trustworthy left-handed reliever. I think this rough stretch has also included some bad luck for O’Brien (3.14 SIERA, .406 BABIP, 63% LOB), and the stuff still looks great, so I expect him to bounce back as early as this week.

- Garrett Cleavinger has not pitched since May 17th now, which has led to more chances for Ian Seymour, who has been solid over the past month for the Rays as the only consistent left-handed option in this bullpen. Hopefully, Cleavinger will be available soon, but the velocity was back down in his most recent outings. When healthy though, his upside is far superior to Seymour’s.

- Who could have imagined we’d see Jeff Hoffman picking up two saves with zero baserunners allowed and five strikeouts last week? He’s scaled back his fastball usage, and the BABIP is finally below .500 now, so don’t be surprised if he’s one of the most dominant relievers in baseball moving forward.

- Clayton Beeter is back and doesn’t look fully healthy, to be honest, but anyway, who is the closer here? Is it actually Richard Lovelady, is that where we are at? Lovelady has a 1.72 ERA since joining the Nationals (15.2 IP), but that comes with a 1.53 WHIP and just a 21% K rate.

| Emilio Pagán | Hamstring. Tested the hamstring and measured well in strength. Meeting with the doctor about starting to play catch. Still on the 4-8 week timeline. |
| Edwin Uceta | Shoulder. Eligible to come off the 60-day IL, but has not progressed to throwing off a mound yet. |
| Matt Strahm | Knee. Still on the 15-day IL with right knee inflammation. Royals view it as a short-term issue based on his history with the same knee. Eligible to return 5/31. |
| Carlos Estévez | Shoulder. Rotator cuff strain has him shut down for three-to-four weeks total, with imaging to follow. |
| Yimi García | Elbow. Eligible off the 60-day IL on 5/24. Threw a two-inning, 30-pitch bullpen on Friday after his FCL setback. A rehab assignment is expected to follow shortly. |
| Ben Joyce | Shoulder. Resumed his throwing program in Arizona. First good news since his most recent setback. |
| Cole Winn | Arm fatigue. Allowed 2 ER in 0.1 IP vs. the Angels on Saturday before being shut down. No timetable yet. |
| Jack Dreyer | Shoulder. Roberts said the team expects “a couple weeks” out and a full recovery. No structural damage. Earliest return is 6/1. |
| Robert Garcia | Shoulder. Still seeing incremental improvement throwing, but no mound work yet. Discomfort lingering. No timetable. |
| Hunter Harvey | Triceps. Stress reaction in the right triceps has him shut down at least four more weeks. Transferred to the 60-day IL on 5/17. Won’t resume throwing until at least early June. |
| Brock Stewart | Foot. Eligible off the IL later this week, but Roberts said “three weeks is fair.” Arm is healthy; bone spur is the issue. |
| Bennett Sousa | Elbow. Still wasn’t throwing as of 5/14 due to lingering soreness. No firm return date. He ended 2025 on the IL with elbow inflammation. |
| Jared Koenig | Elbow. On the IL since early April with an elbow sprain. Diagnosed with UCL damage that he’s attempting to rehab without surgery. Team doesn’t expect him back until late May or early June. |
| Tommy Nance | Forearm. Placed on the 15-day IL by the Blue Jays with right forearm discomfort, which surfaced after his outing against the Tigers. No firm timetable. |
| Burch Smith | Shoulder. Placed on the 15-day IL on 5/22 with right shoulder inflammation. Received a cortisone injection on 5/23. Tigers are targeting a return around 6/6. |
