Notes

Transactions and Schedule

  • There were a couple of significant transactions from a reliever perspective with the Dodgers losing Blake Treinen to the injured list once again, this time with hip issue. They did welcome back fiery high-leverage arm Brusdar Graterol from the 60-day IL and will likely be cautious in his usage to begin with.
  • The miserable White Sox can only hope the return of Dominic Leone from the injured list can help their beleaguered bullpen return to some form of respectability.
  • The Twins will be without Steven Okert for at least a game or two as he was placed on the bereavement list, sadly.

Yesterday’s Performances

SFG 4 – WSN 1

HD: Tyler Rogers (23), Taylor Rogers (8), Ryan Walker (20)

SV: Camilo Doval (21)

  • An impressive performance from Giants closer Camilo Doval, who struck out the side in a perfect frame to notch his 21st save of the campaign. Doval needed just 13 pitches in this outing and turned the tables on his recent form, which has seen him give up three runs in his last five appearances with an ugly 8.31 ERA. Doval will hope he turns the corner now.

MIN 3 – CHC 0

HD: Jhoan Duran (5), Jorge Alcala (13), Caleb Thielbar (7))

SV: Griffin Jax (8)

  • A situation to watch in Minnesota as Rocco Baldelli could be ushering in a changing of the guard in the ninth inning. Griffin Jax was preferred to face the top of the Cubs’ orders over established closer Jhoan Duran. Duran retired the bottom of the Cubs order in the eighth frame before Jax took over in the ninth and allowed a hit before striking out Mike Tauchman and forcing a game-ending ground ball from Nico Hoerner to comfortably earn his eighth save of the season. It was his first since late June and Jax now boasts a 2.01 ERA and 2.11 FIP compared to Duran’s 3.47 ERA and 3.91 FIP this season.

PHI 3 – LAD 5

HD: Michael Kopech (3), Anthony Banda (7)

SV: Daniel Hudson (8)

  • Veteran Daniel Hudson earned the trust of manager Dave Roberts as he worked a clean ninth inning to preserve a two-run lead for the Dodgers over the dangerous Phillies lineup. Hudson allowed a hit before retiring the next three batters he faced with fly balls. As the Dodgers continue to experiment to find the best options in the late innings, Hudson has emerged as a reliable stalwart with a 1.76 ERA and 0.85 WHIP across 46 frames in 2024. Recently acquired Michael Kopech and Anthony Banda were solid in setup duties.

HOU 3 – TEX 4 (F/10)

W: Kirby Yates (4-1)

L: Caleb Ferguson (1-4)

  • After Hunter Brown and Andrew Heaney battled out a pitcher’s duel all the eyes went to the bullpen as this game was tightly poised. Veteran David Robertson looked all over the place after giving up a hit, throwing a wild pitch, and walking two in a messy seventh frame for the Rangers. He gave up just the one run to a Jeremy Peña single. Kirby Yates took over and pitched two frames to earn the win in extras. Yates got into a pickle in the 10th when he allowed an unearned run by hitting Pena with the bases loaded, however with the Rangers coming through in the bottom of the inning he earned his fourth win of a stellar 2024 season. Yates now boasts a terrific 1.08 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and a 59:19 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 41 and two-thirds innings.
  • Corey Seager blasted a solo homer in the eighth inning to charge Ryan Pressly with a blown save, his seventh of the year. And despite Josh Hader blowing through the Rangers in the ninth inning, Caleb Ferguson gave up a two-run homer to Josh Smith in the 10th to hand the Rangers a deserved win.

ARI 7 – CLE 6 (F/11)

W: Ryan Thompson (6-3)

L: Emmanuel Clase (4-2)

HD: A.J. Puk (9),  Kevin Ginkel (12), Hunter Gaddis (24), Tim Herrin (12)

SV: Justin Martinez (1)

  • Fantasy darling Ryan Thompson was charged with a blown save but still took the win in extras as he recorded his sixth win of the season. Thompson also has two saves and 20 holds to go with his six wins. A.J. Puk earned his ninth hold despite seeing a save opportunity the day before against the Pirates. Justin Martinez, who could now come into the saves conversation in Arizona, struck out two and looked phenomenal in earning his first save of the season.
  • Disappointingly so for the Guardians, they saw closer Emmanuel Clase allow the zombie runner to score and in doing so record just his second loss of the campaign. It wasn’t a routine day for the Cleveland bullpen, however, after they used seven bullpen arms in relief of starter Logan Allen. Yikes!

The best of the rest…

  • Ryne Stanek and Edwin Diaz both pitched perfect frames in support of seven fantastic frames from Sean Manaea as the Mets blanked the Cardinals 6-0.
  • Jakob Junis survived giving up a solo homer before loading the bases in the seventh inning as the Reds outlasted the Marlins in a 10-3 victory. Elly De La Cruz blasted two homers as the Marlins continued to slump.
  • Angel Zerpa entered in the top of the sixth inning of a 2-2 ball game with two on and two outs as the Royals looked to back up starter Brady Singer. However, Jarren Duran blasted a two-run double and the Red Sox didn’t look back running out 9-5 winners.
  • JP Sears pitched a beauty through seven frames and Austin Adams and Tyler Ferguson took care of the hapless White Sox over the last two frames to ensure the A’s won 5-1.
