Notes

Transactions and Schedule

  • The Rays activated veteran lefty Colin Poche from the 15-day injured list and optioned Cole Sulser to Triple-A, and the only other transaction of note was the Diamondbacks recalling former closer Scott McGough from the Reno Aces.
  • The Twins have bolstered their pitching options by claiming Cole Irvin off waivers from the Orioles – the veteran lefty could act as both bulk reliever or spot starter down the stretch.

Yesterday’s Performances

MIN 3 – CLE 4

L: Griffin Jax (4-5)

W: Andrew Walters (1-0)

SV: Emmanuel Clase (46)

  • The chase for a 50-save season is on for the best closer in baseball in 2024, Emmanuel Clase. He was superb in this outing, striking out Carlos Correa and Royce Lewis in a perfect ninth frame. His ERA is a remarkable 0.65 and he’s up to 63 strikeouts on the year.
  • Griffin Jax took his fifth loss of the season after coming back out for the eighth inning after getting his starter out of trouble in the seventh. It was an inning too far with rookie Kyle Manzardo blasting a two-run homer to give the Guardians the lead.

DET 7 – KCR 6

HD: Will Vest (6), Beau Brieske (12)

SV: Jason Foley (24)

  • In what has been a committee approach to the ninth inning by manager A.J. Hinch this season, it was a statement to bring Jason Foley out for back-to-back save opportunities on consecutive days. Foley seems the preferred option at the minute with the Tigers season on the line and he struck out one in another solid performance.

HOU 1 – SDP 3

HD: Jason Adam (27), Tanner Scott (9)

SV: Robert Suarez (33)

  • Bouncing back after giving up a game-tying home run Sunday against the Giants, Padres closer Robert Suarez needed just eight pitches to pitch a clean ninth frame to pick up his 33rd save of the campaign. He commands an elite 54:14 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 2024.

WSN 1 – NYM 2 (F/10)

W: Reed Garrett (8-5)

L: Jacob Barnes (8-3)

  • After closer Edwin Diaz pitched a perfect ninth inning, Reed Garrett was first out of the bullpen and duly obliged with a clean tenth frame to pick up his eighth win of the year. Another impressive performance from José Buttó saw him strike out all three batters he faced in a setup role.

ARI 2 – COL 3

W: Seth Halvorsen (2-0)

L: Ryan Thompson (7-5)

  • A rough stretch for Ryan Thompson continued as the Diamondbacks reliever immediately got in trouble by allowing a Brenton Doyle hit and intentionally walking Ryan McMahon in a tied ball game in the bottom of the ninth. Despite inducing a double-play ground ball, Geraldo Perdomo threw the ball past the first baseman to allow Doyle to round third and score the winning run. Disaster!

The best of the rest…

  • Colin Rea picked up his first save of the season after pitching two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief in the Brewers’ 6-3 win over the division-chasing Phillies.
  • The Dodgers trounced Atlanta 9-0 with former closer Evan Phillips picking up the win after the returning Yoshinobu Yamamoto going just four frames.
  • The Cubs tagged A’s starter Joey Estes for six runs on nine hits as he was removed from the game in the second inning. Hogan Harris and Brandon Bielak each threw multiple innings to get the A’s through.
  • Andrew Kittredge backed up his former bullpen buddy Andre Pallante, who went seven scoreless in the Cardinals’ comfortable 4-0 drubbing of the Pirates.
  • The White Sox overcame the Angels 8-4 in the series not one baseball fan wants to hear about!
