Welcome back to a new week of Reliever Rankings!
Bryan Baker, David Bednar, Brock Burke, Aroldis Chapman, Josh Hader, Juan Morillo, Emilio Pagán, Tanner Scott, Justin Slaten and Bennett Sousa each had three SV+HLD’s over the past week. Six closers and four setup men, with Burke probably being the most surprising name here. Going into last week, Burke had just two holds since the start of June, and his velocity had been decreasing as of late, so I wouldn’t put a ton of stock into this.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Paul Sewald | 75% |
| Setup Role | Juan Morillo | 5% |
| Setup Role | Jonathan Loáisiga | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Kevin Ginkel | 5% |
- Juan Morillo is having an interesting season from a holds perspective, with 13 total on the season. Eight came in April, with the other five coming in July, and it does appear he is back in a setup role finally. Some combination of Jonathan Loáisiga, Kevin Ginkel and Brandyn Garcia make up the other leverage options, so I may have been a bit too bullish on Garcia last week.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Hogan Harris | 60% |
| Setup Role | Elvis Alvarado | 20% |
| Setup Role | Luis Medina | 10% |
| Middle Relief | José Suarez | 5% |
- Elvis Alvarado has not only lost his closer role (did he ever really have it?) but I’m worried his lost his slider as well. The fastball is still there; that looks fine, but he still needs a secondary to pair with it, especially when pitching in that home ballpark of his.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Raisel Iglesias | 70% |
| Setup Role | Dylan Lee | 10% |
| Setup Role | Didier Fuentes | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Dylan Dodd | 5% |
- Raisel Iglesias continues to hang on and pitch…fine… and while Dylan Lee has been excellent outside of this blip coming out of the break, I think we are still searching for consistency in front of those two. Didier Fuentes and Dylan Dodd have been more good than bad, but Fuentes only has one hold over the past three weeks while Dodd has four. That being said, can we trust that Dodd’s role here will stick and he’ll continue to see consistent hold chances? I’m skeptical, even though he does deserve them.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Interim Closer | Tyler Wells | 50% |
| Setup Role | Rico Garcia | 25% |
| Setup Role | Andrew Kittredge | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Yennier Cano | 10% |
- Rico Garcia has found some extra velocity coming out of the All-Star break, and looks much like the reliever we were excited about back in April (Grant Wolfram also looks like his April self, to a lesser degree). Hopefully this velo can stick for the next two months. He’s also allowed three home runs over his past four outings, but don’t worry about that; that’s the law of averages (luck) catching up to him.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Aroldis Chapman | 75% |
| Setup Role | Garrett Whitlock | 10% |
| Setup Role | Justin Slaten | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Tyron Guerrero | 5% |
- Justin Slaten has been dominant over the past month with a 1.86 ERA (1.32 xFIP), 0.83 WHIP, and 37% K rate over his past eleven outings. This bullpen is just firing on all cylinders and is much deeper than we’d imagined months ago (how good has Jovani Morán been?), which takes some of the pressure off the likes of a Slaten.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Interim Closer | Jacob Webb | 50% |
| Setup Role | Caleb Thielbar | 20% |
| Setup Role | Trent Thornton | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Ryan Rolison | 10% |
- Caleb Thielbar has been better in July (1.70 SIERA, 1.04 WHIP, 35.5% K), with some extra velocity that wasn’t there initially upon his return from the IL.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer? | Grant Taylor | 40% |
| Co-Closer? | Sean Newcomb | 20% |
| Co-Closer? | Bryan Hudson | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Jordan Hicks | 10% |
- July has turned into a bit of a struggle for Sean Newcomb (2.25 WHIP) and Bryan Hudson (9.00 ERA). The gap between the two isn’t as far as I may have believed last week, but the White Sox really should consider adding a reliever or two at the deadline.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Emilio Pagán | 75% |
| Setup Role | Tejay Antone | 10% |
| Setup Role | Brock Burke | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Julian Garcia | 5% |
- Emilio Pagán may wind up being one of the bigger closer names on the move this deadline, barring some surprising fireworks involving players under contract. There haven’t really been a ton of rumors surrounding Pagán, however (the $10M player option could be to blame), so he may wind up staying put after all.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Cade Smith | 85% |
| Setup Role | Hunter Gaddis | 5% |
| Setup Role | Colin Holderman | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Erik Sabrowski | 5% |
- Colin Holderman still has just one hold over the past month (13 games, 11.2 IP), and it appears as if he’s just not really in the leverage group anymore. I’m not really sure who is, though, outside of Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis (should he even be?).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jordan Romano | 50% |
| Setup Role | Antonio Senzatela | 10% |
| Setup Role | Juan Mejia | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Victor Vodnik | 10% |
- Jordan Romano is the closer here, I guess, and you’d have to be extremely desperate in a very deep league to chase that.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Kenley Jansen | 60% |
| Setup Role | Kyle Finnegan | 20% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Holton | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Drew Anderson | 5% |
- If the Tigers move Tarik Skubal, you’d imagine that opens them up to essentially selling all potential rentals, including Kenley Jansen. IF they keep Skubal and try to make a push, I think they’d need to add help in front of Jansen, because the current group just isn’t cutting it. Either way, this bullpen should look different next week.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Josh Hader | 80% |
| Setup Role | Steven Okert | 5% |
| Setup Role | Bennett Sousa | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Enyel De Los Santos | 5% |
- Bennett Sousa continues to look more and more like his 2025 self this time around and appears to have already captured a setup role. Bryan King getting called up shouldn’t affect Sousa.
- Bryan Abreu still isn’t quite back to looking like himself, although it does feel like he’s getting closer, and I’d rather take a shot on him continuing to pitch better than rostering Enyel De Los Santos at the moment.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Steven Cruz | 40% |
| Setup Role | Alex Lange | 20% |
| Setup Role | Daniel Lynch IV | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Lucas Erceg | 10% |
- Steven Cruz has two saves in his past three outings and finally may be at least in the mix for saves with Alex Lange, who doesn’t need to be rostered anywhere. Matt Strahm and John Schreiber will likely be on different rosters this time next week, so that leaves Cruz, Lange, Daniely Lynch IV and Lucas Erceg in that high-leverage mix. Cruz and Lynch should have the upper hand on the others.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Ryan Zeferjahn | 40% |
| Setup Role | Sam Bachman | 20% |
| Setup Role | José Fermín | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Samy Natera Jr. | 10% |
- Ryan Zeferjahn appears to be back in the closer role again (I’m getting déjà vu), and I’m fine with it, but let’s just try and commit to something, please? – This was my blurb last week, and of course the Angels decided not to commit to something as they tried everyone but Zeferjahn in the ninth this past week.
- Sam Bachman went from not pitching for about a week to entering in a save situation, and while he hasn’t allowed any hits over his past two outings, he has allowed four walks and hit a batter while getting just three outs. The command is super volatile right now, and is he even near 100% health?
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Edwin Díaz | 70% |
| Setup Role | Tanner Scott | 15% |
| Setup Role | Evan Phillips | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Alex Vesia | 5% |
- Edwin Díaz is back tomorrow, and that changes the look of this bullpen. Let’s examine the fallout:
- Tanner Scott should be just fine in holds leagues, but in save only theres obviously going to be a drop-off. If you are more concerned with ratios and strikeouts, he’s still worth rostering. Alex Vesia’s role takes a hit as now Scott is the top left-handed set-up man. Evan Phillips‘ role probably stays the same as the top right-handed setup man, unfortunately bumping Edgardo Henriquez down. Given Roberts’ love for his veterans, I could see Brock Stewart having a leg up on Henriquez for that secondary right-handed setup role. Jack Dreyer and Will Klein basically get left out, but Dreyer should at least stick around and be able to help ratios, Ks, and maybe vulture some wins.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Pete Fairbanks | 60% |
| Setup Role | Michael Petersen | 20% |
| Setup Role | Calvin Faucher | 10% |
| Middle Relief | John King | 5% |
- Michael Petersen has not been able to capitalize on Pete Fairbanks‘ struggles, and McCullough continues to deploy him early in games as the team’s fireman, which adds another layer to this frustrating situation.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Trevor Megill | 75% |
| Setup Role | Abner Uribe | 10% |
| Setup Role | Aaron Ashby | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Chad Patrick | 5% |
- Aaron Ashby is one hold away from double-digit holds for the first time in his career, and while he’s been a league-specific play all year (leagues that count wins, that is), the WHIP has been better in the small sample post-All-Star break. If we can get respectable ratios and more holds in the final two months (5 of his 9 holds have come in July), he can still be holds league relevant, even if your league doesn’t count wins.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Yoendrys Gómez | 50% |
| Setup Role | Andrew Morris | 25% |
| Setup Role | Taylor Rogers | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Tommy Nance | 5% |
- Andrew Morris is very fine, and maybe even above-average as a reliever, and with Cole Sands return not working out, he should be locked into the top setup role here for the remainder of the season (barring some crazy trade deadline fallout). I mean, I could even see him overtaking Yoendrys Gómez for saves at some point, as it’s not like Gómez is running away with that closer role as mediocre as he’s been lately (5.52 SIERA, 4% K-BB rate over his past 11.2 innings).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Devin Williams | 70% |
| Setup Role | Luke Weaver | 10% |
| Setup Role | Brooks Raley | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Huascar Brazobán | 5% |
- Luke Weaver’s name keeps popping up as a trade candidate, which could help or hurt his value depending on the destination. His velocity has also been down the past four times out, in which he’s allowed three hits and struck out just one.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | David Bednar | 75% |
| Setup Role | Fernando Cruz | 10% |
| Setup Role | Brent Headrick | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Camilo Doval | 5% |
- Brent Headrick has allowed just two earned runs dating back to mid-May (10 weeks, 30 IP) while also posting a 0.93 WHIP and 32% K rate over his span. Probably one of the most underrated relievers in baseball right now, but I’m not so certain this hot streak can last the final two months.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jhoan Duran | 85% |
| Setup Role | Jonathan Bowlan | 5% |
| Setup Role | Orion Kerkering | 5% |
| Middle Relief | José Alvarado | 5% |
- Orion Kerkering has been forced into high-leverage work as of late, and it’s not exactly like he deserves it. Over the past month, despite a 2.08 ERA, Kerkering holds a 6.96 SIERA and -5.1% K-BB rate. José Alvarado’s ERA may be inflated, but the peripherals under the hood do suggest he is throwing the ball better than Kerkering right now.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Mason Montgomery | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Gregory Soto | 30% |
| Setup Role? | Yohan Ramírez | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Carmen Mlodzinski | 10% |
- Gregory Soto had himself a rough June that even bled into July a bit, but he’s settled down and looked great since the All-Star break. Good enough to be the team’s closer over Mason Montgomery? That remains to be seen (but probably not).
- Yohan Ramírez is not good for your WHIP, but he’s also allowed just one earned run over his past 21.1 innings. That walk rate just needs to improve, and hopefully we can start getting him some more hold opportunities (3 holds since the start of June, six total).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Mason Miller | 80% |
| Setup Role | Adrian Morejon | 10% |
| Setup Role | Bradgley Rodriguez | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Yuki Matsui | 5% |
- Yuki Matsui only has six holds on the season as well, all of which have come in the past month. There could be some ratio instability with Matsui, but he’s missing bats and has an important role (for now).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Erik Miller | 60% |
| Setup Role | Caleb Kilian | 20% |
| Setup Role | Dylan Smith | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Sam Hentges | 5% |
- Erik Miller has officially surpassed Caleb Kilian as the Giants closer, and he’s arguably been the best reliever in July, with a 0.00 ERA (1.69 SIERA), 0.70 WHIP, and 42% K rate. The stuff and swing-and-miss numbers support this breakout, and while we’ve seen stretches from Miller like this in the past, this does feel more sustainable given the command gains.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Andrés Muñoz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Gabe Speier | 10% |
| Setup Role | Eduard Bazardo | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jose A. Ferrer | 5% |
- José A. Ferrer holds a 2.13 ERA, 1.18 WHIP over his past 12.2 innings…yet he only has two holds (no saves) over his span, with Eduard Bazardo and Gabe Speier soaking up all the hold chances. That essentially makes Ferrer a one, maybe two (at best) category contributor.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Riley O’Brien | 60% |
| Setup Role | George Soriano | 20% |
| Setup Role | Ryne Stanek | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Luis Gastelum | 5% |
- Riley O’Brien didn’t allow a run until April 25th, opening the season with 13 straight scoreless outings. Since then, O’Brien holds a 5.40 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and just a 9% K-BB rate. The issue is that there really is no one suited to be the closer in this bullpen, but I feel like George Soriano or even Ryne Stanek could be worth a look.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Bryan Baker | 75% |
| Setup Role | Kevin Kelly | 10% |
| Setup Role | Garrett Cleavinger | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Cole Sulser | 5% |
- Cole Sulser has put together a nice July (3.09 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, 30% K), but so has Cam Booser (2.61 ERA, 0.39 WHIP, 43% K). That being said, Sulser has six holds to Booser’s three in July and appears locked in to some setup role.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jacob Latz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Jakob Junis | 10% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Alexander | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Peyton Gray | 5% |
- I’ve seen the Rangers mentioned as a popular destination for relievers at the deadline, and please, let that be true because Jacob Latz needs some help here.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Louis Varland | 75% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Rogers | 10% |
| Setup Role | Jeff Hoffman | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Braydon Fisher | 5% |
- Tyler Rogers has not allowed a run over the past month (10 IP), and even holds a 20% K rate over that span. He and Jeff Hoffman basically are soaking up all the Jays hold chances these days, and assuming no one is traded in the next week, that should remain the case for the rest of 2026.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Clayton Beeter | 60% |
| Setup Role | Orlando Ribalta | 20% |
| Setup Role | Riley Cornelio | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Eddy Yean | 5% |
- Based on this past weekend’s usage, Clayton Beeter may finally be getting traditional closer treatment. That’s a somewhat exciting development in deeper leagues or for those of you holding out hope for a Beeter breakout.
| Daniel Palencia | Elbow. Had a “great” bullpen Saturday per Counsell. Next: an up-down bullpen Tuesday, then live BP. Cubs expect him to start a minor league rehab assignment during the week of 8/3. |
| Ryan Helsley | Elbow. Second opinion confirmed the UCL is intact, just inflammation around it. Rehab program set to begin. The Orioles are targeting a return before the end of the season. |
| Robert Suarez | Elbow. Played catch on the field Friday (7/24), his first time throwing since landing on the IL. Still needs mound work and to throw to hitters before a rehab assignment. Weiss said he’s “still nowhere close to returning.” |
| A.J. Puk | TJS (Internal Brace). Follow-up MRI on 7/17 showed the left shoulder capsule “hasn’t fully healed.” Awaiting further evaluation and a second opinion. IL stay likely to extend further. |
| Justin Martinez | TJS. Completed his second live BP on Wednesday (7/23). Next: a bullpen session and a bridge game at the team’s facility, then potentially a rehab assignment. Late-August return firmly in play. |
| Felix Bautista | Shoulder. Continues bullpen work. Elias reiterated he’s “throwing really, really well.” Orioles are targeting a September return, but no established timeline. |
| Jeremiah Estrada | Knee. Already on his rehab assignment and has made multiple outings. Fastball rebuilt to 94 mph. Nearing activation and could rejoin the Padres this week. |
| Anthony Bender | Shin. Estimated return was 7/24; activation could be imminent. Wrapping up his rehab assignment at Double-A Jacksonville. |
| Matt Brash | Lat. Continues to ramp up intensity in his throwing program. GM Hollander still pointing to mid-to-late August as the return window. |
| Edwin Uceta | Shoulder. Still hasn’t resumed throwing and is headed back to the doctor as the “nagging” shoulder injury lingers. Surgery hasn’t been ruled out. 2026 is done. |
| Jason Adam | Shoulder. Setback confirmed. The subscapularis strain isn’t healing as expected. Timeline pushed to late August at the earliest, more likely September. |
| Graham Ashcraft | Elbow. Continuing his throwing program at the Reds’ training facility. Cleared to throw from 105 feet after the encouraging UCL imaging. Still needs to build back up, and a setback is always in play with UCL cases. |
| Will Vest | Elbow. No surgery required for the stress fracture, but no clear timetable. He admitted he’s dealt with the discomfort most of the season. Fully expects to return in the second half. |
| Yimi García | Elbow/biceps. Resumed playing catch, but his fastball had dipped to 93 mph in his last rehab appearance (down from 95-96 pre-surgery). Multiple setbacks make a 2026 return increasingly unlikely. |
| Tony Santillan | Oblique. Threw out to 75 feet Friday (7/24) with no discomfort. Additional imaging scheduled for 7/31. Santillan told trainers he feels ahead of schedule. |
| Ben Joyce | Shoulder. Made his second Triple-A Salt Lake rehab appearance on 7/27: 1 IP, no baserunners, 1 K, topped out at 103.1 mph. Back-to-back scoreless outings. Activation is close? |
| Carlos Estévez | Shoulder. Still on the 60-day IL after the July setback and shoulder injection. A 2026 return is genuinely in doubt. |
| Dedniel Núñez | Elbow. Rehab assignment continues at Triple-A Syracuse. Mets may seek an extension of the standard 30-day rehab limit given this is a second Tommy John recovery. |
| JoJo Romero | Appendicitis. Recovering well from the emergency appendectomy, but the Cardinals don’t expect him back when eligible on 7/29. No firm timetable yet. He’s around the club but hasn’t resumed baseball activities. |
| Robert Garcia | Shoulder. Transferred to the 60-day IL on Monday (7/26) with left shoulder inflammation. Return remains weeks away with no bullpen progression yet. |
