Erik Sabrowski, David Bednar, Lucas Erceg, JoJo Romero each had three SV+HLD’s over the first week of the season, with Sabrowski picking up FOUR so far. I was excited for Sabrowski this year, but I did not expect this start to the season. He has an elite pitch mix with a high iVB four-seamer and a pair of whipeout breakers, it’s just always been about the command (and health) with him. He’s healthy now and commanding his stuff well enough that he should be rostered in all holds formats. He’s in such a good spot in that Guardians bullpen as the top lefty and has more swing and miss upside than almost any non-closer reliever out there.
Also, let’s remember that we are just 1 week into the 26-week season, so let’s not panic too much with those who have not had success so far.

| Closer | Paul Sewald | 70% |
| Setup Role | Jonathan Loáisiga | 10% |
| Setup Role | Taylor Clarke | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Juan Morillo | 5% |
- Paul Sewald has looked great so far (2 outings) and is looking like the best pitcher in this bullpen by quite a large margin. Again, it’s very early, and this could implode at anytime but for now, ride the hot hand in Sewald, who we’ve seen have success with this pitch mix in the past.
- Juan Morillo is one of the “lefty” relief guys in this bullpen, but he’s also probably the reliever in this bullpen with the most upside. The changeup was great for him last year in a small sample, and so far it’s been working to get lefties out this season. With a slider to combat righties and a four-seamer that sits around 99 MPH, Morillo is worth keeping an eye on.

- Elvis Alvarado would have shaky control, but even the stuff seems down so far this season. To be fair, almost all of the WBC relievers have seen either a downtick in stuff and/or command so far in the MLB season, but he’s been a bummer so far. He’s only thrown 3 sliders for some reason (4.8%) despite it being his go-to secondary last year (32%), so maybe once he gets that going, it will turn things around.

- I know Aaron Bummer is eventually going to disappoint me, but maybe if he just threw like 75-80% breakers, he could break out. The battle for that fourth leverage role could be made interesting if Bummer can figure things out as well as Joel Payamps, who has shown better stuff this spring.

- He may not have a setup role yet, but Rico Garcia is the team’s second-best reliever at the moment, and it should just be a matter of time before he starts seeing 7th/8th inning usage and racking up holds. The four-seamer is so good, and he still has the two-plus offspeed pitches to back it up.
- I still think Tyler Wells can be a pretty good reliever as well; it just may take some time to get used to pitching out of the bullpen again.

- The Red Sox have one win, but it’s not these guys’ fault. Ok, well, maybe Weissert is responsible for one game, but the top three have been good, as expected. Garrett Whitlock has had some command issues, and his velo is down about 2 MPH, but it hasn’t hurt him so far. Chalking this up to the WBC effect.

- It’s crazy that at 39 years old Caleb Thielbar may have his best fastball right now. Sure, it’s only 93 MPH, but with 21″ of iVB, it continues to dominate. Some team should have been willing to pay him way more than the $4.5 million he got to return to the Cubs (maybe they did an he preferred Chicago?).

| Closer | Emilio Pagán | 50% |
| Setup Role | Graham Ashcraft | 25% |
| Setup Role | Tony Santillan | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Connor Phillips | 10% |
- Not a great start to the season for Emilio Pagán, and I think it’s more related to location than his velocity being down. He was also due for some regression, I just don’t think we thought it’d hit so early.
- Tony Santillan’s four-seamer averaged 97.2 MPH in 2024, 96.3 MPH in 2025, and this year currently sits at…93.9 MPH. Something to monitor there.
- Graham Ashcraft, on the other hand, is throwing his cutter harder than he ever has (99 MPH), and his slider is sitting at a ridiculous 93 MPH. That’s peak Emmanuel Clase velo numbers, but just to be clear, Ashcraft’s arsenal doesn’t have quite the same movement profile as Clase had. Francona loved to lean on Clase in Cleveland, though, so perhaps we could see Ashcraft work his way into the closer role eventually.
- If Connor Phillips could just have some consistent fastball command, he’d also be in the mix to be the next closer in Cincinnati. The sweeper is a legit weapon, and the four-seamer sits at 98+ MPH, he just can’t locate it…yet. Still a very fun arm to chase.

- I’m not sure who needs to hear it, but Cade Smith is fine. He’s had some issues with his secondary command, but the stuff is fine, and he should shore up the command sooner rather than later.
- Shawn Armstrong is probably fine, too, but there are more interesting holds options out there to chase. Gaddis’ return will likely push him down the depth chart as well.

| Setup Role | Kyle Finnegan | 25% |
| Setup Role | Will Vest | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Holton | 5% |
- Will Vest got punished the other night, and while it could just be a fluky off night, the stuff has been pretty mediocre over the past month (ST and WBC factored in as well). There was some regression coming, but let’s see how far it snowballs. I think he’ll most likely be OK.

| Closer | Josh Hader (IL) | 70% |
| Interim Closer | Bryan Abreu | 20% |
| Setup Role | Bryan King | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Steven Okert | <5% |
- Bryan Abreu’s velo has been down about 3 MPH, and he’s had no command, so heading into yesterday’s outing, I was very concerned. He started Roman Anthony off with a 94.6 MPH fastball, then threw two sliders, the second of which resulted in a HR. BUT THEN, he bounced back with three straight strikeouts, throwing a 95.5 MPH fastball to the next batter, and with his last four fastballs, he was 97.4 MPH, 96 MPH, 96 MPH, and 97.3 MPH. That should give us something to be optimistic about, at least (but also, why are the velocities all over the place?).
- AJ Blubaugh should probably be starting, but if the Astros want to use him as a one-inning reliever, I am very intrigued. As a reliever, he has closer stuff with three plus pitches in his fastball, sweeper, and changeup, and the Astros desperately need right-handed bullpen help. Ryan Weiss is kind of in the same boat, but not quite as dominant.

| Closer | Lucas Erceg | 35% |
| Setup Role | Matt Strahm | 25% |
| Setup Role | John Schreiber | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Nick Mears | 15% |
- Speaking of velocities being all over the place for “interim” closers, Lucas Erceg has been all over the place (sitting 99 MPH one day and 94.6 three days later). I still can’t get a read on whether we are going to see 2024 Erceg or 2025 Erceg or maybe something in between, but he’s worth the add in most save-only leagues until we find out.
- Matt Strahm is working with diminished stuff, and right now, it hasn’t affected him as he’s leaning more on his offspeed than usual. Is that going to work long term? I’m a bit skeptical.

| Co-Closer | Drew Pomeranz | 20% |

- Jordan Romano is surviving for now, but certainly not thriving, as he has no command of anything and is working with diminished stuff. It may work longer than expected, but I don’t think he’s the closer for this team all season, so just be ready to jump off this ride when it gets rocky.
- Sam Bachman doesn’t have the role we want for him yet, but he should eventually, as he’s a better bet than Chase Silseth (I think?)

| Closer | Edwin Díaz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Tanner Scott | 10% |

| Middle Relief | Will Klein | <5% |
- Edwin Díaz’s fastball has averaged 95.8 MPH to begin the season. The lowest he’s ever averaged is 97.2 MPH. Could be something, or it could just be that WBC tax.
- I love that the Dodgers are giving guys like Jack Dreyer and Will Klein high-leverage chances early in the season, as both deserve it.

| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Pete Fairbanks | 70% |
| Setup Role | Calvin Faucher | 20% |
| Setup Role | Andrew Nardi | 5% |

- This team is just churning out stuff “demons”, as they say. Andrew Nardi has been amazing so far and looks ready to break out. Lake Bachar doesn’t even have a chance at a steady role, but his stuff is crazy good. Michael Petersen, though? This guy has always been kind of on the radar, but man, he’s impressive (97 MPH four seam with 20.7″ iVB). He needs to figure out a consistent secondary, but he should be team Great Britain’s closer the next WBC, regardless (or Olympics?).

| Closer | Trevor Megill | 65% |
| Setup Role | Abner Uribe | 20% |

- Aaron Ashby has actually looked great so far, but the results are better than the stuff has shown, and I worry about some regression. Also, what is a realistic number of holds for him in the role he currently has? The good news is that the other lefties have looked great. Angel Zerpa is in a prime high-leverage role, while Jared Koenig looks much better than he did in spring training so far.
- We also shouldn’t forget about the third righty in this bullpen, Grant Anderson, who should remain in the holds mix, given that he is the third righty in this bullpen.

| Closer | David Bednar | 75% |
| Setup Role | Camilo Doval | 10% |
| Setup Role | Fernando Cruz | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Tim Hill | <5% |
- It’s too early to full-on panic, but David Bednar is on panic watch as his stuff is not quite there right now. He may need some time to warm up (his start last season wasn’t great either), but it’s worth monitoring.
- Camilo Doval was sitting 97 MPH in his second game, where he was throwing whiffle balls to Giants hitters, but since then, the velocity has dropped off, down to 94 MPH with his sinker and 95 MPH with his cutter. Those pitches are usually in the 97-98 MPH range, so something to keep an eye on.
- I still have Brent Headrick over Tim Hill, mostly due to upside, but also the thought that eventually Tim Hill won’t have this crazy good command, right? Headrick can miss bats regularly, while Hill is just smoke and mirrors. Maybe he is the left-handed Tyler Rogers, but I can’t endorse that quite yet.

| Closer | Jhoan Duran | 80% |
| Setup Role | José Alvarado | 5% |
| Setup Role | Brad Keller | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jonathan Bowlan | 5% |
- This bullpen is kind of worrisome with Brad Keller’s stuff being down and José Alvarado already having command issues (as well as some velo concerns). Hopefully, Jhoan Duran can stay consistent.
- I still love Jonathan Bowlan, I just don’t know that the role will be consistent enough yet.

| Co-Closer | Dennis Santana | 50% |
| Co-Closer | Gregory Soto | 25% |
| Setup Role | Issac Mattson | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Mason Montgomery | 10% |
- Dennis Santana doesn’t have the same stuff he had in the second half of 2024 or even last year, for that matter. I think that’s part of the reason the team won’t commit to him as the full-time closer, and instead, we are seeing Gregory Soto see some ninth-inning opportunities. Soto has been the team’s best reliever so far, by quite a large margin, and it’s great to see him throwing this sweeper more often.
- Justin Lawrence could be the best righty in this bullpen, but he needs to be more consistent with his fastball locations as they remain vulnerable. That sweeper is great, though.
- What are we supposed to do with Mason Montgomery at this point? I want to be more patient, but I just don’t see any signs that he will be able to command his fastball anytime soon. When it does happen, it will be a beautiful thing (especially with this new curveball), and you’ll want to jump in and roster him again. For now, it’s probably best to chase some more consistent relievers. At the first sign of a true breakout, he will be flying up the ranks, don’t worry.

| Setup Role | Jeremiah Estrada | 5% |
| Setup Role | Adrian Morejon | 5% |

- Jeremiah Estrada and Adrian Morejon have both been a bit rocky to open the year, but both should be fine, Morejon especially (although a lower ceiling). Estrada may be dealing with something mechanical, as both his velocity and command are down; hopefully, it’s just nothing health-related.
- Bradgley Rodriguez has looked great so far with his four-seam/changup combo, I just don’t know how he factors in when Jason Adam returns.

| Closer | Ryan Walker | 65% |
| Setup Role | Keaton Winn | 10% |
| Setup Role | Erik Miller | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Joel Peguero (IL) | 10% |
- Keaton Winn has kind of broken out here over the past week (I thought it would be Kilian) and has emerged as the top setup man for the Giants. The splitter is still Winn’s best offering, and he’s been throwing it 66% of the time so far in his new role. Is that sustainable? Not really, but Fernando Cruz throws his at 60% of the time, so maybe a 50-60% usage rate could work here.

- Jose A. Ferrer and Gabe Speier have been a little shaky to start the year, stuff-wise and role-wise, so I have some small concerns there. They’ll probably be fine. I’m worried Eduard Bazardo may be cooked at this point, though (probably needs some extended time off).

- This does feel like a full-blown committee, with Riley O’Brien playing “closer” the last two games and Ryne Stanek the first two save chances. JoJo Romero should get a turn soon, whenever a tough lefty pocket is due up in the ninth, and he’s been the best pitcher of the trio so far this season.
- Matt Svanson’s fastball was quite lucky last year, and this year it hasn’t been. It may just be one of those seasons for him, as it’s not a great pitch. The sweeper is cool, but yea I get Porter Hodge type vibes with Svanson.

- Griffin Jax man, I’m sorry. I ultimately think he’ll settle in and be fine, but yes, it has been frustrating. He’s dealing with bad luck again despite his elite stuff, but he also needs to figure out how to use/command his fastballs more efficiently. You’d imagine the Rays would be the team to make the necessary changes/tweaks, right?
- Garrett Cleavinger’s velo has been down 2-3 MPH, and his slider and sweeper are not grading out as they used to. Concerning (and another WBC guy), but I think we give him some time still.

- Chris Martin is working with diminished stuff and probably isn’t 100% healthy, but he’s still in the mix to close out games for the Rangers, so that’s something.
- Carter Baumler is still interesting; he just doesn’t have a great role yet, which is not surprising given that he’s a Rule 5 draft pick.

- Mason Fluharty has clearly established himself as the Jays top lefty, and I love his cutter/sweeper mix. Ignore his current ratios, he’s legit.
- Braydon Fisher and Tommy Nance are also really good and have important roles right now, but what happens when Yimi García returns?

| Co-Closer | Cionel Pérez | 20% |
| Setup Role | PJ Poulin | 10% |

- This looks like a potential messy closer-by-committee approach based on yesterday’s usage. Clayton Beeter is still the only one worth rostering in save-only leagues, as long as he is not walking everyone (so far, so good). Cionel Pérez has seen a lot of 8th inning usage and could eventually get a few saves, but there’s risk with rostering him and his middling fastball.
