Happy Opening Day, everyone! The “real” Opening Day, not whatever that was on Netflix last night. There isn’t a ton to talk about yet as we are still waiting to see how bullpens shake out over the coming days and possibly weeks, but one thing to keep an eye on early in the season, even in bullpens where roles seem locked in, is to figure out who the top four relievers are in each bullpen. In leagues that count holds, those top four relievers on the depth chart can all have significant value, especially if they pitch for a good team.
I mentioned this last week, but keeping this in here today. For this season, my reliever content will look a little different, with one article on Thursdays with the Saves, Holds, and SV+HLD’s lists. BUT I will have two daily articles mirroring Nick’s SP Roundup and SP Streamers series. The RP Roundup is pretty self-explanatory; it will be my recap of the previous days’ reliever outings and what they may mean. For the RP Streamers series, there will be a chart for each team showing usage patterns and who may be down that day. I’ll also pick a few streamers to target for that day as well. The daily articles will start tomorrow!
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Paul Sewald | 50% |
| Setup Role | Jonathan Loáisiga | 10% |
| Setup Role | Ryan Thompson | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Taylor Clarke | 10% |
- Torey Lovullo essentially named Paul Sewald the closer in a recent interview, which shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise at this point, but it’s nice to get some sort of clarification before Opening Day. The team won’t carry any lefties in their bullpen, instead relying on Kevin Ginek and Juan Morillo to get lefties out, which I don’t think will end well for the team or Ginkel/Morillo. Figuring out who will be the right-handed setup man for Sewald, we have Jonathan Loáisiga, Ryan Thompson, and Taylor Clarke fighting for that role, but I’m hoping we see Loáisiga get the first chance at that, given his upside.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||

| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Mark Leiter Jr. | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Hogan Harris | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Scott Barlow | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Elvis Alvarado | 15% |
- I don’t know who will be the closer here yet, but I don’t want to roster Mark Leiter Jr. Jr. If you are rostering anyone here in save-only leagues, I’d suggest Hogan Harris, who at least should see some saves against left-handed heavy lineups. He should also be less volatile than the rest of this bullpen. In deeper holds leagues, stash Elvis Alvarado and hope that he can shore up his command and move into a high-leverage role.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer (for now) | Raisel Iglesias | 50% |
| Setup Role/Future Closer | Robert Suarez | 40% |
| Setup Role | Dylan Lee | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Kinley | <5% |
- The Braves are set with their top three relievers, but figuring out who that 4th man in the pecking order will be could give you an edge in deeper Holds leagues. Tyler Kinley probably is the first option here, and he put together a solid spring, but I was also impressed with Joel Payamps this spring. Aaron Bummer will remain that secondary lefty, and he too is coming off a strong spring.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Ryan Helsley | 80% |
| Setup Role | Andrew Kittredge (IL) | 15% |
| Setup Role | Rico Garcia | <5% |
| Middle Relief | Dietrich Enns | <5% |
- Keegan Akin was placed on the IL to start the season, and the team will now be down arguably their top two setup men. It gives Dietrich Enns a chance to carve out a setup role for himself, while we are also seeing Tyler Wells transition back to the bullpen for the first time since 2021.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Aroldis Chapman | 80% |
| Setup Role | Garrett Whitlock | 10% |
| Setup Role | Justin Slaten | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Greg Weissert | <5% |
- Greg Weissert and Danny Coulombe are candidates for that 4th RP role here, but I can’t get excited about either at the moment. Perhaps Coulombe if he can stay healthy which is a huge question mark at this point.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Daniel Palencia | 75% |
| Setup Role | Phil Maton | 10% |
| Setup Role | Hunter Harvey | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Caleb Thielbar | <5% |
- Hunter Harvey looked great this spring and should be firmly in the setup mix with Phil Maton and Caleb Thielbar. Ben Brown is also starting the year in the bullpen, and someone to monitor as we figure out what kind of role he will have moving forward.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Seranthony Domínguez | 55% |
| Setup Role | Jordan Leasure | 20% |
| Setup Role | Grant Taylor | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Sean Newcomb | 5% |
- Seranthony Domínguez may have cooled the closer talk around Jordan Leasure, but I’m still excited to see him this season after a dominant second half to 2025. Sean Newcomb back in the bullpen shouldn’t be a huge surprise, and should enter the year as the teams top left handed reliever.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Emilio Pagán | 75% |
| Setup Role | Tony Santillan | 10% |
| Setup Role | Graham Ashcraft | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Connor Phillips | <5% |
- Can Connor Phillips take holds away from Pierce Johnson? Probably not to start the season since Johnson is not making $6.5 million for mop-up duty, but the skills are night and day between the two at this point.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Cade Smith | 85% |
| Setup Role | Hunter Gaddis (IL) | 5% |
| Setup Role | Shawn Armstrong | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Erik Sabrowski | <5% |
- With no Hunter Gaddis to start the year, Shawn Armstrong and Matt Festa should see more high-leverage work. Erik Sabrowski should be locked in as the teams top left handed setup man to open the year.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Victor Vodnik | 30% |
| Setup Role | Juan Mejia | 25% |
| Setup Role | Zach Agnos | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Jimmy Herget | 10% |
- Victor Vodnik is going to open the year as the team’s closer, but you’ll likely want to stay away from this bullpen. Especially if you are in weekly leagues, as the Rockies play a series at home once a week for the first half of the season.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer 1a | Kenley Jansen | 60% |
| Setup Role (Closer 1b) | Kyle Finnegan | 20% |
| Setup Role | Will Vest | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Holton | 5% |
- Kenley Jansen is safe as the team’s closer, as long as he is healthy. Tyler Holton brings little upside to the table, but we know he’s going to factor into game outcomes, and having SP eligibility doesn’t hurt.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Josh Hader (IL) | 70% |
| Interim Closer | Bryan Abreu | 25% |
| Setup Role | Bryan King | <5% |
| Middle Relief | Steven Okert | <5% |
- WE got a Josh Hader update today, as it sounds like the plan is for him to face hitters in mid-April. That seems later than we’d probably hoped for, but that means more save chances for Bryan Abreu (probably). Abreu has not looked great this spring (both results-wise and stuff-wise), so hopefully he’s just shaking off some rust, and nothing is going on there health-wise.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Carlos Estévez | 35% |
| Setup Role | Matt Strahm | 25% |
| Setup Role | Lucas Erceg | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Nick Mears | 15% |
- Carlos Estévez apparently will be on the team’s opening day roster despite still being down 7 MPH. In his last outing, he struck out three (don’t read into that), but he was clearly laboring, and it feels obvious that he is not 100% healthy. I’d still stash Strahm or maybe Erceg in deeper leagues, but it feels like everyone in this bullpen is in a decline.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Jordan Romano | 25% |
| Co-Closer | Drew Pomeranz | 30% |
| Setup Role | Ben Joyce (IL) | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Sam Bachman | 15% |
- Kirby Yates was a surprise IL placement this week, as he will miss some time with a knee injury, and at his age, this could be a long-term thing. Jordan Romano (if healthy) might get the first chance to close out games here, but I still like Drew Pomeranz long term, and think the signing of another lefty in Joey Luchessi may be a sign the team feels the same way. Sam Bachman has looked electric at times this spring, and it feels like he’s leapfrogged Ryan Zeferjahn for potential holds chances, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Bachman eventually worked his way into the saves mix as well.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Edwin Díaz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Tanner Scott | 15% |
| Setup Role | Alex Vesia | <5% |
| Middle Relief | Will Klein | <5% |
- We know the top three options in the Dodgers bullpen, and while Blake Treinen was probably the favorite for that fourth spot entering March, he may have pitched himself out of a big role this spring. Will Klein has some momentum right now, but there’s also Edgardo Henriquez, Ben Casparius, and Jake Dreyer. This bullpen is so deep, it may be hard to trust anyone outside of Díaz, Scott, and (hopefully) Vesia for consistent SOLDS.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Pete Fairbanks | 70% |
| Setup Role | Calvin Faucher | 20% |
| Setup Role | Andrew Nardi | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Anthony Bender | <5% |
- The Marlins have talked about Calvin Faucher and Anthony Bender opening the year in a setup role, but let’s also not forget about Andrew Nardi coming off an electric spring.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Trevor Megill | 60% |
| Co-Closer | Abner Uribe | 30% |
| Setup Role | Angel Zerpa | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Aaron Ashby | <5% |
- Just reading the tea leaves here, but based on how their springs went, I think the Brewers are looking at Angel Zerpa as their top late-inning lefty right now, replacing Jared Koenig, who has struggled mightily this spring (both stuff and results-wise).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Taylor Rogers | 25% |
| Co-Closer | Cole Sands | 20% |
| Setup Role | Kody Funderburk | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Eric Orze | 10% |
- I don’t know who will be closing here, but I don’t want to roster Taylor Rogers if I don’t have to. Cole Sands may actually be the closer here after all, moreso by default than actually earning the job, but I’d be ok taking a chance on him. I’m still holding out hope that Eric Orze gets a chance here eventually (or a SP is moved into the bullpen).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Devin Williams | 80% |
| Setup Role | Luke Weaver | 10% |
| Setup Role | A.J. Minter (IL) | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Brooks Raley | <5% |
- With A.J. Minter out, who is the 4th reliever the Mets can trust in this bullpen? Luis García Jr. may get the first chance, but realistically, you’ll want to avoid the rest of this bullpen outside of the top three.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | David Bednar | 80% |
| Setup Role | Camilo Doval | 10% |
| Setup Role | Fernando Cruz | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Tim Hill | <5% |
- I’m glad to see Brent Headrick make the team out of camp, but the next step is for him to overtake Tim Hill as the team’s top lefty. That shouldn’t be too difficult, but Headrick will need to be more consistent.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jhoan Duran | 80% |
| Setup Role | José Alvarado | 5% |
| Setup Role | Brad Keller | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jonathan Bowlan | 5% |
- Orion Kerkering will start the year on the IL as he’s been slowed with a hamstring strain all camp. This allows Jonathan Bowlan to get some high-leverage looks, and I think there’s a good chance he is the team’s breakout reliever this year if he can stay healthy.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Dennis Santana | 50% |
| Co-Closer | Gregory Soto | 25% |
| Setup Role | Issac Mattson | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Mason Montgomery | 10% |
- We got some word of this closer situation being a potential committee this season, which makes sense, but I’d still predict Santana gets the most chances early on in the year. Mason Montgomery remains the best upside stash here, while Gregory Soto has closer experience and is probably “sharing” the role with Santana for now, depending on matchups. Isaac Mattson’s fastball shape has me more intrigued in him, but there’s still limited upside there.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Mason Miller | 80% |
| Setup Role | Jeremiah Estrada | 10% |
| Setup Role | Adrian Morejon | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jason Adam (IL) | <5% |
- Jason Adam will open the year on the IL, as the team will play it safe with him. Bradgley Rodriguez and David Morgan could fill in as the 4th RP for the time being, but Morgan probably has a better chance at holds based on seniority.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Ryan Walker | 70% |
| Setup Role | Erik Miller | 15% |
| Setup Role | Joel Peguero (IL) | 10% |
| Middle Relief | José Buttó | <5% |
- There’s not a lot to be excited about in this bullpen, but man, Caleb Kilian gave me some hope last night. I know Ryan Walker and Erik Miller will factor into the later innings consistently, but Kilian should be in that group with them based on what we’ve seen recently.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Andrés Muñoz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Matt Brash | 10% |
| Setup Role | Jose A. Ferrer | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Gabe Speier | <5% |
- This bullpen remains steady. I guess the only question is who gets left out of the holds mix within their top 5 reliever core? It could be Bazardo, but more likely some combination of Bazarod, Speier, and Ferrer, depending on matchups.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Riley O’Brien | 25% |
| Co-Closer | JoJo Romero | 25% |
| Co-Closer | Ryne Stanek | 25% |
| Middle Relief | Matt Svanson | 20% |
- We still have no indication of who the Cardinals will go with as their closer or if it will just be strictly a committee. The same four names they’ve been talking about remain in the mix.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| closer | Griffin Jax | 50% |
| Setup Role | Garrett Cleavinger | 20% |
| Setup Role | Edwin Uceta (IL) | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Bryan Baker | 10% |
- No Hunter Bigge on the Opening Day roster is kind of a bummer, but we should see him up sooner rather than later. We still don’t know how this “closer committee” approach will play out, but I’m still in on Griffin Jax leading them in saves rather comfortably.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Robert Garcia | 60% |
| Co-Closer | Chris Martin | 25% |
| Setup Role | Carter Baumler | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jakob Junis | <5% |
- The Rangers have mentioned that Robert Garcia and Chris Martin will share the closer role to start the season…but Carter Baumler might be the best reliever on the roster right now. His stuff has looked awesome this spring, and he looks like the clear-cut gem of the Rule 5 draft so far.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jeff Hoffman | 70% |
| Setup Role | Yimi García (IL) | 10% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Rogers | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Louis Varland | 5% |
- Even without Yimi García on the active roster, this bullpen is so deep that it could be hard for guys like Braydon Fisher and Mason Fluharty to earn holds. That said, I can see Fluharty overtaking Brendon Little as the team’s top lefty, but once García returns, things get tight for Fisher on that depth chart.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer? | Clayton Beeter | 30% |
| Co-Closer? | Cole Henry | 20% |
| Setup Role? | Cionel Pérez/PJ Poulin | 10% |
| Middle Relief? | Gus Varland | 10% |
- Clayton Beeter looks like the favorite to see the most save chances based on recent spring usage (if we can even take that into account). The command issues aside, he has crazy good stuff and could develop into a great closer over time. I still love the upside Gus Varland provides if he can stay healthy.
| Pitcher | Notes |
| Josh Hader | Biceps. Currently throwing bullpens and progressing, could be available by mid-April. |
| Edwin Uceta | Shoulder. Still seems like a minor concern they are being cautious with. Could return in April. |
| A.J. Puk | TJS (Internal Brace). Everything has gone smoothly in his rehab, hoping for a late May/early June return. |
| Jason Adam | Quad. He’s been able to throw off a mound, just needs to get PFP’s under him. April return is likely. |
| Yimi García | Elbow. Team is slow-playing his return, but we should see him in April or early May at the latest. |
| Andrew Kittredge | Shoulder. Sounds like a minor thing, but he’s likely out until late April/early May |
| A.J. Minter | Lat. Team is being cautious here, but Minter should be back by early May. |
| Ben Joyce | Shoulder. Rehab has been going well, so far, and he could be available in the first half of the season. |
| Joel Peguero | Hamstring. Grade 2 strain, which can be tricky, but assuming no setbacks, he could be ready in April. |
| Hunter Gaddis | Forearm. Questionable for Opening Day, but it’s trending like he will open the year on the IL. |
| Kirby Yates | Knee. This is a surprise. The Angels aren’t too concerned, but haven’t committed to a minimum IL stint. |
| Orion Kerkering | Hamstring. Likely just a minimum IL stint, as he was behind other pitchers in spring training. |
