Welcome back to a new week of Reliever Rankings!
Daniel Duarte, Kenley Jansen, Michael Petersen, and Louis Varland each had three SV+HLD’s over the past week.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Justin Martinez | 50% |
| Setup Role | Brandyn Garcia | 25% |
| Setup Role | Juan Morillo | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Kevin Ginkel | 5% |
- Justin Martinez has returned to the Diamondbacks bullpen, and while he hasn’t officially been named the closer there, recent usage by others in this bullpen and the fact Martinez was sitting at 102 MPH in his rehab outings have me thinking he’ll be the closer in due time. Brandyn Garcia and Juan Morillo continue to throw the ball well and should remain in high-leverage setup roles at the least, which could leave Jonathan Loáisiga and Kevin Ginkel on the outside looking in.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Hogan Harris | 60% |
| Setup Role | Elvis Alvarado | 20% |
| Setup Role | Luis Medina | 10% |
| Middle Relief | José Suarez | 5% |
- Elvis Alvarado has been struggling since the All-Star break, as he’s lost feel for his slider, and I’m just not sure it’s going to come back this season. He actually holds the same ratios as Hogan Harris since the break, but Harris is at least finding ways to miss bats at a more consistent rate.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Raisel Iglesias | 60% |
| Setup Role | Didier Fuentes | 20% |
| Setup Role | Dylan Lee | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Dylan Dodd | 5% |
- Raisel Iglesias holds a 5.84 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and 8.6% K-BB rate since the All-Star break, but he’s still hanging on to that closer role…for now. I’d have to imagine we are one bad blow-up away from Didier Fuentes save chances.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Interim Closer | Andrew Kittredge | 40% |
| Co-Interim Closer | Yennier Cano | 30% |
| Setup Role | Rico Garcia | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Cam Sanders | 5% |
- Yennier Cano and Andrew Kittredge have been splitting save chances, but that did not go so well this week, as Cano has given up 7 hits and 2 walks over his past 1.2 innings (6 ER) while Kittredge blew a save his last time out. I’d still guess that Kittredge is the favorite for saves here, but his stuff remains down while Rico Garcia actually showed much improved stuff his last time out (the fastball shape was similar to where it was in April). Maybe Garcia can work his way back into that mix, or do the Orioles push for Helsley or Bautista to return now that they hold the third Wild Card spot?
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Aroldis Chapman | 75% |
| Setup Role | Erik Miller | 10% |
| Setup Role | Tyron Guerrero | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Greg Weissert | 5% |
- Erik Miller gets a boost with Garret Whitlock and Justin Slaten going on the IL this past week. Tyron Guerrero last week would have too, but we have not seen him in six days since he gave up five runs without recording an out and his stuff was down. Hopefully, he’s not dealing with some sort of injury too.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Daniel Palencia | 50% |
| Setup Role | Jacob Webb | 30% |
| Setup Role | Ryan Zeferjahn | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Caleb Thielbar | 5% |
- Daniel Palencia should return this week, as he looked great during his most recent rehab stint at AAA. Most reports have him taking back the closer role from Jacob Webb, but I’m not sure that’s a foregone conclusion. Either way, his presence will bump Ryan Zeferjahn down a bit, especially as he’s allowed five earned runs over his past 4.1 innings.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Grant Taylor | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Bryan Hudson | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Sean Newcomb | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Jordan Hicks | 10% |
- This still remains a messy committee that I really don’t want any part of. Grant Taylor has at least been steady when available, but what happened to the stuff (and strikeouts)?
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Emilio Pagán | 75% |
| Setup Role | Tejay Antone | 10% |
| Setup Role | Brock Burke | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Julian Garcia | 5% |
- Brock Burke has had his ups and downs this year, but he’s at least been a steady setup option for the Reds the past month, with a 2.04 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 34.3% K rate over his past 17.2 innings. All the while, Tejay Antone has struggled lately with eight earned runs in the month of August (5.2 IP).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Cade Smith | 85% |
| Setup Role | Hunter Gaddis | 5% |
| Setup Role | Erik Sabrowski | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Colin Holderman | 5% |
- It’s only two games, but Erik Sabrowski looked great over the past week, allowing no baserunners and striking out 4/5 batters he faced. Colin Holderman, on the other hand, has struggled recently and is dealing with a wrist injury.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jordan Romano | 70% |
| Setup Role | Juan Mejia | 10% |
| Setup Role | Jimmy Herget | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Brennan Bernardino | 5% |
- Jordan Romano is the closer here, I guess, and you’d have to be extremely desperate in a very deep league to chase that.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Kenley Jansen | 70% |
| Setup Role | Drew Sommers | 10% |
| Setup Role | Kyle Finnegan | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Holton | 5% |
- Drew Sommers has been awesome since the All-Star break, posting a 1.98 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 41% K rate, and has emerged as one of, if not the top, setup men in this bullpen in front of Kenley Jansen (who has looked much better as of late also). He’s certainly looking much better than Kyle Finnegan, at least.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Josh Hader | 80% |
| Setup Role | Bryan Abreu | 5% |
| Setup Role | Steven Okert | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Enyel De Los Santos | 5% |
- Bryan Abreu has been pitching better, but the command is still hit-or-miss game to game, and I’m not so sure he’s a better setup option than Enyel De Los Santos at this point. You’re getting more swing and miss from Abreu, but it could come with a walk or two.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Steven Cruz | 45% |
| Co-Closer | Nate Pearson | 30% |
| Setup Role | John Schreiber | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Alex Lange | 10% |
- Steven Cruz has been fine since the All-Star break, but he’s still lacking a true secondary offering, and lately the fastball has not been as great. On the flip side, Nate Pearson has great breaking stuff, but the fastball is not always reliable, despite the velocity. I don’t love the situation here if we are talking about a split closer deal, but if Cruz (or Pearson) does pull away and take the role for themself, then there might be something there.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Samy Natera Jr. | 45% |
| Co-Closer | Ben Joyce | 35% |
| Setup Role | José Fermín | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Luke Murphy | 5% |
- This bullpen looks to be in great hands with Samy Natera Jr. and Ben Joyce (and José Fermin and Sam Bachman when healthy), but which one will close moving forward? I’ll give the edge to Natera for now, as he continues to be dominant, and will like be available more often than Joyce. That’s not to say Joyce hasn’t looked great or doesn’t deserve the closer role, because his fastball is peak Ben Joyce right now.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Tanner Scott | 60% |
| Setup Role | Evan Phillips | 20% |
| Setup Role | Alex Vesia | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Edgardo Henriquez | 5% |
- What are we supposed to do about Edwin Díaz? Díaz now holds a 12.91 ERA, 2.74 WHIP, and 19.6% K rate in nine games since returning from the IL, but according to Roberts, there are no better relief options in his bullpen at the moment. Tanner Scott does hold a 1.61 WHIP since the All-Star break, but he’s limited the damage (0.96 ERA), and the stuff still looks great at least. EDIT: More deja vu as Díaz was placed on the IL today. Go pick up Scott, but we could also see Phillips or others factor into saves, given how Roberts doesn’t trust anyone in this bullpen.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Pete Fairbanks | 75% |
| Setup Role | Michael Petersen | 10% |
| Setup Role | Calvin Faucher | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Zuber | 5% |
- Calvin Faucher has been dealing since the All-Star break with a 0.84 ERA (0.92 SIERA), 0.66 WHIP, and 46.2% K rate over his past 10.2 innings. He’s been leaning on his slider and four-seamer more over this span instead of the cutter, so that change appears to be working. Tyler Zuber has been great too, but I could still see Faucher overtaking him in that secondary setup role sooner than later.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Trevor Megill | 75% |
| Setup Role | Aaron Ashby | 10% |
| Setup Role | Chad Patrick | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Antonio Senzatela | 5% |
- Aaron Ashby steps up as the primary setup option here with Abner Uribe on the IL. Ashby continues to be a WHIP liability, but the ERA typically stays below four, and he remains a good source of strikeouts as well.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Yoendrys Gómez | 60% |
| Setup Role | Jeff Hoffman | 25% |
| Setup Role | A.J. Minter | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Andrew Morris | 5% |
- A.J. Minter has moved in front of Andrew Morris in a setup role here, and that’s not too surprising considering how lucky Morris has been up until this point. I’m not totally out on Morris yet (especially with how shaky Jeff Hoffman has looked recently), but this doesn’t seem to be trending the right way.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Interim Closer | Kodai Senga | 60% |
| Setup Role | Daniel Duarte | 20% |
| Setup Role | Austin Warren | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Nate Lavender | 5% |
- Daniel Duarte continues to act as the primary setup man here for the Mets, and why not? The upside is limited given the lack of pure swing-and-miss stuff, but he can locate and generate weak contact, so there’s that. Nate Lavender has a little more swing-and-miss in him from the left side, so it will be interesting to see how he looks the rest of the way.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | David Bednar | 80% |
| Setup Role | Fernando Cruz | 5% |
| Setup Role | Brent Headrick | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Paul Blackburn | 5% |
- This bullpen is an issue for the Yankees. Fernando Cruz holds a 5.23 ERA, and 1.74 WHIP (6% K-BB) over his past 10.1 innings, and he’s supposed to be the top setup man here. Paul Blackburn’s stuff (or lack thereof) will eventually show, and Brent Headrick could be hitting a wall here, as he only totalled 47 innings last year and 37.1 the year before that.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jhoan Duran | 85% |
| Setup Role | Jonathan Bowlan | 5% |
| Setup Role | Brooks Raley | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Orion Kerkering | 5% |
- The Phillies really need one of Orion Kerkering or José Alvarado to figure things out here, but Alvarado has been AWOL, and Kerkering’s stuff remains significantly down. Alex McFarlane checks all the boxes from a stuff standpoint, but is the command good enough yet?
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Mason Montgomery | 50% |
| Co-Closer | Luke Weaver | 30% |
| Setup Role | Gregory Soto | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Camilo Doval | 5% |
- Mason Montgomery started throwing a sinker on June 23rd, literally the first time all year he threw one, and since, he’s been throwing it 31.3% of the time (and more so recently). Also, over this span (19.2 IP), Montgomery happens to hold a 1.83 ERA (0.52 xFIP), 0.66 WHIP, and 55.4% K rate. Those numbers could easily be confused with another Mason M who happens to close out games for an NL team. Luke Weaver, on the other hand, can’t seem to get his fastball velocity to stabilize where it needs to be.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Mason Miller | 80% |
| Setup Role | Adrian Morejon | 10% |
| Setup Role | Bradgley Rodriguez | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jeremiah Estrada | 5% |
- Bradgley Rodriguez has really stepped up lately as that steady secondary setup man for the Padres, as he holds a 1.98 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 36% K rate over his past 13.2 IP since the All-Star break. He’s just easier to trust than Jeremiah Estrada at this point, whose stuff and command are still out of whack.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Dylan Smith | 60% |
| Setup Role | Sam Hentges | 10% |
| Setup Role | Keaton Winn | 10% |
| Middle Relief | JT Brubaker | 10% |
- Dylan Smith is acting as the Giants closer as expected, and he should be relatively safe in that role considering the lack of competition.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Andrés Muñoz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Gabe Speier | 10% |
| Setup Role | Eduard Bazardo | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jose A. Ferrer | 5% |
- Jose A Ferrer and Eduard Bazardo (among others in this bullpen) have been disappointing lately, but where else do the Mariners have to turn at this point?
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Riley O’Brien | 80% |
| Setup Role | George Soriano | 5% |
| Setup Role | Ryne Stanek | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Luis Gastelum | 5% |
- Riley O’Brien holds a 1.74 ERA and 0.87 WHIP over his past 10.1 innings pitched, but still just a 14.3% K-BB rate and 4.40 xFIP. The stuff looked better his last time out, though, and we only need about 5-6 more weeks from him, so hopefully he can push through and give us that.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Bryan Baker | 80% |
| Setup Role | Kevin Kelly | 5% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Wells | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Garrett Cleavinger | 5% |
- Who would have thought that we’d be talking about Garrett Cleavinger vs. Cam Booser for the top lefty setup role in Tampa Bay, but here we are. If Booser isn’t the guy yet, I’m not sure what it would take because he’s just been much more stable than Cleavinger at this point.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jacob Latz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Peyton Gray | 10% |
| Setup Role | Robby Ahlstrom | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jakob Junis | 5% |
- Robby Ahlstrom has a nice 0.69 WHIP and 33.3% K rate over his past 13 innings, and should at least have distanced himself from Tyler Alexander as the top left-handed setup man here.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Louis Varland | 80% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Rogers | 10% |
| Setup Role | Mason Fluharty | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Paul Sewald | 5% |
- So this is where Paul Sewald ends up, huh. Well, he definitely has a chance to work his way into a secondary setup role, but that could take some time as Mason Fluhary has pitched well as of late.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Clayton Beeter | 50% |
| Setup Role | Orlando Ribalta | 20% |
| Setup Role | Yovanny Cruz | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Will Dion | 5% |
- Clayton Beeter has just one save in August so far to go along with a 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 5 K’s over 5.1 innings. He’s just not helping out much once again, making him hard to roster in standard save-only leagues.
Injured List
| Ryan Helsley | Elbow. Helsley is two weeks into his throwing program, long tossing, but “still a few weeks before he gets on a mound.” The MRI showed no UCL tear, and he’s eligible to come off the 60-day IL on 8/29. |
| Devin Williams | Shoulder. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/10, retroactive to 8/8, with a right shoulder strain. Interim manager Andy Green said he doesn’t expect a long stint and that the strain is believed to be minor, with the placement largely precautionary. |
| Felix Bautista | Shoulder. Could begin a minor league rehab assignment in late August, per Mike Elias, after throwing his first live batting practice on 8/4. Elias said Bautista has been “throwing really, really well” off the mound. |
| Robert Suarez | Forearm. Walt Weiss said on 8/12 that Suarez has been cleared to begin a throwing program. “It’s a big leap from starting a throwing progression to trying to get outs in Major League games, but the fact is he’s moving forward.” |
| Garrett Whitlock | Elbow. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/13 with elbow inflammation. Whitlock said the pain had been “building” for a couple weeks before he couldn’t throw at all, but added, “I don’t think there’s anything structurally wrong with it.” |
| Abner Uribe | Forearm. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/14, with a forearm flexor strain. The MRI did not show a serious injury, and Uribe was able to play catch; Adam McCalvy reported he was set to throw a 15-pitch bullpen on 8/18. |
| Anthony Bender | Shin. Begins a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on 8/18. He completed three bullpens and hit 95 mph in the most recent one on 8/14, against a 96.4 season average. |
| Matt Brash | Lat. Threw his first bullpen off a mound in more than two months on 8/15 at Daikin Park. Next up is another session on the road this week, then possibly a live BP back in Seattle before a minor league rehab assignment. |
| Sam Bachman | Forearm. No new updates since the 8/5 placement on the 15-day IL with forearm radial nerve inflammation. He faced two batters on 8/2 against Milwaukee before being pulled and said afterward that he was dealing with arm fatigue. |
| Jason Adam | Shoulder. Played catch from about 90 feet on 8/17 and said afterward, “Felt clean, I felt no pain, so really good”, his first throwing since the early-July IL placement. He began with weighted plyo balls on 8/11. |
| Justin Slaten | Elbow. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/16, retroactive to 8/13, with right elbow soreness. Slaten said the elbow and forearm pain had flared a few times across the season before this stint. |
| Graham Ashcraft | Elbow. The Reds said on 8/15 that Ashcraft has progressed to throwing live BP to hitters, up from 90-foot catch play earlier in his rehab. A PRP injection appears to have helped the UCL sprain heal, and he’s avoided Tommy John surgery. |
| Tony Santillan | Oblique. Sent to Triple-A Louisville on a rehab assignment on 8/14 and threw a scoreless inning in his second outing there, though his velocity was down about 1.5 mph on the fastball and 3 mph on the slider from his pre-injury baselines. |
| JoJo Romero | Appendicitis. Beginning a rehab assignment the week of 8/17, after his first bullpen went to plan on 8/12. A few more bullpens and a live BP were the plan before game action. |
| Brock Stewart | Shoulder. Threw a simulated inning of live batting practice on 8/13, with a short rehab assignment the likely next step. He was placed on the IL with shoulder discomfort, and an MRI showed tendinitis; Roberts called the move precautionary. |
| Caleb Kilian | Oblique. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/10 with a left oblique strain after grabbing his side, recording the final out in the 8/9 win over Toronto. Mattingly called it a moderate strain, gave no timetable, and said Kilian would be out “for a while.” |
| Manuel Rodriguez | Elbow. Pitched on back-to-back days for Triple-A Durham on 8/14 and 8/15, described as the final hurdle before activation, and could be reinstated as early as this week. His rehab line since 7/23 sits at a 6.14 ERA and 13:3 K:BB over 7.1 innings. |
| Hunter Harvey | Triceps. No new updates since he was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League with a mid-August return as the target. |
| Cole Sulser | Back. No new updates since the 7/29 placement on the 15-day IL, retroactive to 7/26, with lower back spasms, his second back-related stint of the year after a low back strain in May. |
| Gavin Hollowell | Shoulder. No new updates since the 7/31 placement on the 15-day IL with shoulder inflammation. Counsell said the club needed to hit “pause” after Hollowell felt soreness in recent outings and that the issue is not considered serious. |
| Carlos Estévez | Shoulder. Was scheduled to throw a bullpen Sunday 8/16, before being re-evaluated. He still needs to face hitters and complete a rehab assignment. He’s been limited to one appearance all season and remains on the 60-day IL. |
| Joel Peguero | Hamstring. Began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on 8/11, walking all three batters he faced and getting charged with three runs in his first game action since May. |
| Blake Treinen | Elbow. Transferred to the 60-day IL on 8/11 as a paper move, not a setback. Dave Roberts said, “No setback.” Treinen faced hitters again on 8/12 with Roberts saying the “stuff was coming out hot,” and a rehab assignment is the next step. |
| Nick Mears | Shoulder. Scheduled to begin a mound progression the week of 8/10 after resuming throwing on 7/29, with a rehab assignment possible if the build-up stayed clean. A 7/10 scan revealed a right lat strain on top of the shoulder impingement. |
| Edwin Uceta | Shoulder. Started playing catch from 75 feet, but still highly questionable for 2026. At least he is throwing again, though. |
