Welcome back to a new week of Reliever Rankings!
Aroldis Chapman, Mason Montgomery, Emilio Pagán, and Garrett Whitlock each had three SV+HLDs over the past week.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Justin Martinez | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Brandyn Garcia | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Juan Morillo | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Kevin Ginkel | 20% |
- Justin Martinez continues to look great, at least stuff-wise, as the command is working its way back, but he still doesn’t seem to have Lovullo’s trust, at least not yet. He did enter the ninth yesterday in a tie game, so that’s promising at least. The rest of this bullpen has also been pitching really well as of late, especially Jonathan Loáisiga and Kevin Ginkel. This has led to a pure, full-blown closer committee, unfortunately.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Hogan Harris | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Elvis Alvarado | 40% |
| Setup Role | Luis Medina | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Scott Blewett | 5% |
- It looks like we may be back to Hogan Harris as closer 1A once again. It’s just a headache best avoided if possible.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Raisel Iglesias | 60% |
| Setup Role | Didier Fuentes | 20% |
| Setup Role | Dylan Lee | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Dylan Dodd | 5% |
- Raisel Iglesias is trying to hang on here through the remainder of the season, and there’s a chance his changeup is good enough to allow for that, but the Braves schedule is pretty tough the rest of the way (6th hardest).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Andrew Kittredge | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Rico Garcia | 30% |
| Co-Closer | Yennier Cano | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Cam Sanders | 5% |
- Andrew Kittredge may still be considered the closer here, but I’m just totally out on him at this point and in save-only leagues, done chasing this situation. The remaining schedule ain’t that easy either.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Aroldis Chapman | 80% |
| Setup Role | Garrett Whitlock | 5% |
| Setup Role | Erik Miller | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Wyatt Olds | 5% |
- This bullpen just keeps rolling along, despite multiple injuries.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Jacob Webb | 50% |
| Setup Role | Daniel Palencia | 25% |
| Setup Role | Ryan Zeferjahn | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Caleb Thielbar | 5% |
- Daniel Palencia hasn’t looked right in his past two appearances, with the velocity way down, and you have to wonder if he’s still hurt. It’s hard to completely give up on him with the upside that it is, and he could go out and work a scoreless ninth sitting at 100 MPH in his next outing, but he’s not trending the right way.
- That means the Cubs desperately need someone in front of Jacob Webb to step up, and I’m going to say that person will be Caleb Thielbar as Ryan Zeferjahn continues to have his own issues. Thielbar’s been giving up runs, but the swing and miss is still there; he just needs his luck to turn.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Grant Taylor | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Bryan Hudson | 30% |
| Co-Closer | Jordan Hicks | 10% |
| Co-Closer | Sean Newcomb | 10% |
- Hagen Smith still has command problems, and the stuff may not be as great as advertised, but he’s been dealing lately, and I could see him overtaking Sean Newcomb as that second leverage lefty.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Emilio Pagán | 70% |
| Setup Role | Tony Santillan | 10% |
| Setup Role | Graham Ashcraft | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Luis Mey | 5% |
- Emilio Pagán has looked much better recently, and while that’s promising, the Reds currently have the toughest remaining schedule in baseball with series against the Brewers, Dodgers (x2), Braves, Cubs, and Blue Jays.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Cade Smith | 85% |
| Setup Role | Hunter Gaddis | 5% |
| Setup Role | Erik Sabrowski | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Tim Herrin | 5% |
- Hunter Gaddis has seen a velocity uptick recently, and that’s led to better results for him. We’ve seen this before, and then the next week he’s losing velo, but it’s a positive trend for now!
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jordan Romano | 70% |
| Setup Role | Brennan Bernardino | 10% |
| Setup Role | Jimmy Herget | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Juan Mejia | 5% |
- Jordan Romano is the closer here, I guess, and you’d have to be extremely desperate in a very deep league to chase that.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Kenley Jansen | 70% |
| Setup Role | Drew Sommers | 10% |
| Setup Role | Kyle Finnegan | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Holton | 5% |
- Drew Sommers had a rough week, and I may have been a bit ambitious with my ranking last week. I still like him better than anyone else in that bullpen, but that’s not saying a whole lot either.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Josh Hader | 80% |
| Setup Role | Bryan Abreu | 5% |
| Setup Role | Bennett Sousa | 5% |
| Middle Relief | AJ Blubaugh | 5% |
- Bennett Sousa, down fastball and all, now is needed to step up with Steven Okert on the IL.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Steven Cruz | 55% |
| Setup Role | Nate Pearson | 25% |
| Setup Role | Alex Lange | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Craig Kimbrel | 5% |
- I know it appears as if Steven Cruz has locked up the closer role here over Nate Pearson, but are we sure that’s the right answer? I think Cruz may have the higher ceiling, but he also has the lower floor. Pearson’s stuff has been more consistent as of late.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| C0-Closer | Ben Joyce | 40% |
| C0-Closer | Samy Natera Jr. | 40% |
| Setup Role | José Fermín | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Ryan Watson | 5% |
- Samy Natera Jr. is back, and he looked much better in his second outing coming off the IL, so I’m not too worried about him moving forward. How the closer timeshare plays out moving forward, though, remains to be seen.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Tanner Scott | 70% |
| Setup Role | Evan Phillips | 10% |
| Setup Role | Edgardo Henriquez | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Jack Dreyer | 5% |
- Edgardo Henriquez and Evan Phillips have looked like two of the best relievers in baseball over the past two weeks. Combine that with Jack Dreyer looking fantastic as well and Alex Vesia coming off his strongest week in a long time, and it would appear that we have a problem here, as how are these four going to get 1-2 holds a week? Well, it’s the Dodgers, they can make it happen (and probably will).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| -Closer | Pete Fairbanks | 70% |
| Setup Role | Calvin Faucher | 10% |
| Setup Role | Michael Petersen | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Zuber | 5% |
- Pete Fairbanks is back tomorrow, and I’m sure he’ll look fine, but this Marlins team also has the second toughest strength of schedule remaining, with 15 of their last 17 games against potential playoff teams.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Trevor Megill | 75% |
| Setup Role | Abner Uribe | 10% |
| Setup Role | Aaron Ashby | 5% |
| Middle Relief | JoJo Romero | 5% |
- JoJo Romero doesn’t look that great, maybe he needs some time to get back in game shape, but right now he’s not a particularly attractive holds option.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Yoendrys Gómez | 60% |
| Setup Role | Jeff Hoffman | 15% |
| Setup Role | A.J. Minter | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Andrew Morris | 5% |
- Yoendrys Gómez has had a rocky month now, but he’s still locked into that closer role, and the stuff has continued to improve. Add in a pretty easy schedule, and Gómez could wind up being a nice play down the stretch here.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Interim Closer | Kodai Senga | 60% |
| Setup Role | Daniel Duarte | 15% |
| Setup Role | Dedniel Núñez | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Nate Lavender | 10% |
- Dedniel Núñez looks awesome right now and is shaping up as one of the best holds league sleepers for 2027. Over the past month, he’s posted a 24% SwStr rate and 28% Zcontact-Oswing (guys can’t tough him in the zone, and they chase his stuff out of the zone).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | David Bednar | 80% |
| Setup Role | Brent Headrick | 5% |
| Setup Role | Paul Blackburn | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Tim Hill | 5% |
- Brent Headrick continues to roll, even with some diminished velocity as of late, but he’s been the one rock in this bullpen in front of the closer. Ideally, he’d get a bit of a break here in September, but the Yankees still need him as the rest of this bullpen is full of question marks.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jhoan Duran | 85% |
| Setup Role | Jonathan Bowlan | 5% |
| Setup Role | Brooks Raley | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Orion Kerkering | 5% |
- Orion Kerkering is so frustrating. I think I say this every week, but it’s so true. He just has not been trustworthy since the All-Star break (8.10 ERA, 1.68 wHIP, 7% K-BB rate over his past 16.2 IP), and even after Alex McFarlane’s Sunday meltdown, I’d still go to him over Kerkering.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Mason Montgomery | 70% |
| Setup Role | Luke Weaver | 10% |
| Setup Role | Gregory Soto | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Camilo Doval | 5% |
- Mason Montgomery now holds a 1.16 ERA (1.19 xFIP), 0.68 WHIP, and 47.4% K rate since introducing his sinker back on June 23rd (31 IP, 1116 TBF). Just ridiculous stuff.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Mason Miller | 80% |
| Setup Role | Adrian Morejon | 10% |
| Setup Role | Bradgley Rodriguez | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Yuki Matsui | 5% |
- Bradgley Rodriguez continues to just keep chugging along and remains super underrated behind the two behemoths in that bullpen. Even if Jason Adam is able to return, I don’t see how they can remove Bradgley from this role.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Dylan Smith | 60% |
| Setup Role | Trent Harris | 20% |
| Setup Role | Carson Seymour | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Reiver Sanmartin | 5% |
- Trent Harris is making moves in this shallow bullpen, and I like the breakers; I’m just skeptical about how far that fastball can take him. Worth keeping an eye on for now.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Andrés Muñoz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Gabe Speier | 10% |
| Setup Role | Eduard Bazardo | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jose A. Ferrer | 5% |
- Andrés Muñoz has been great since he started throwing his fastball more than the slider, but there have been a few outings where he hasn’t followed that recently. When he does, though, he’s been amazing with a 1.23 ERA, 0.68 WHIP, and 46% K rate over his past 22 IP in which he’s thrown more fastballs than sliders in the game (dating back to mid-June).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Riley O’Brien | 70% |
| Setup Role | Ryne Stanek | 10% |
| Setup Role | George Soriano | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Luis Gastelum | 5% |
- Riley O’Brien was a ticking time bomb who exploded and has now turned into Jekyll and Hyde. If ratios aren’t important to you, O’Brien is still racking up saves as the team won’t quit him. He now holds a 5.30 ERA (5.11 xFIP), 1.61 WHIP, and 5.8% K-BB rate since the All-Star break, but it comes with 12 saves.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Bryan Baker | 75% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Wells | 10% |
| Setup Role | Kevin Kelly | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Cole Sulser | 5% |
- We have not seen Bryan Baker since he left his last outing with an “illness”, and while his velocity was down way more than we had seen (over 4 MPH), the velocity had been trending down since the All-Star break. Hopefully, all is well, and he’ll look fine this week.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jacob Latz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Chase Silseth | 5% |
| Setup Role | Jakob Junis | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Robert Garcia | 5% |
- Robert Garcia has returned (finally), but it may be too late to give Jacob Latz any sort of consistent setup help. This bullpen is now overloaded with lefties as well.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Louis Varland | 80% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Rogers | 10% |
| Setup Role | Mason Fluharty | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Paul Sewald | 5% |
- I’m not too worried about Louis Varland’s most recent outing, but he hasn’t been as dominant since the start of July with a 1.14 WHIP and 22% K rate over his last 25.1 innings. The stuff looks better than ever, so this may be more of a sequencing/command issue.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Clayton Beeter | 40% |
| Setup Role | Erik Tolman | 30% |
| Setup Role | Jack Sinclair | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Jared Simpson | 5% |
- Yuck.
Injured List
| Edwin Díaz | Neck. Began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on 9/6, striking out one in a scoreless inning and averaging 96.0 mph with the fastball against a 96.3 season average. He walked one; neither ball in play was hit hard, and the Dodgers have not said how many outings he needs. Dave Roberts framed it as “get another one, and then get back with us.” |
| Ryan Helsley | Elbow. Threw his fifth bullpen session on 9/4 at Camden Yards and was scheduled for live batting practice on 9/8 or 9/9, per the club. Craig Albernaz confirmed the live BP plan on 9/7. Testing showed inflammation around the UCL with the ligament intact, so surgery is not part of the plan. He’s on the 60-day IL after the 7/3 placement retroactive to 6/30. |
| Devin Williams | Shoulder. Set to throw off a mound for the first time since landing on the IL, per Mike Puma on 9/8, and remains optimistic about pitching again this season. He restarted a throwing program with a game of catch on 8/29. Williams began feeling arm fatigue in early August but did not have an MRI until after his 8/7 outing, which revealed the strain. |
| Félix Bautista | Shoulder. Craig Albernaz said on 9/7 that Bautista’s return is not imminent, per Matt Weyrich. He has made five rehab appearances between Double-A Chesapeake and Triple-A Norfolk since 8/23, allowing four runs on three hits and six walks with five strikeouts over four innings. Command, not health, is the holdup. He touched 97 mph in his 8/23 debut. |
| Robert Suarez | Elbow. Threw a pain-free bullpen on 9/2 and was scheduled for a 25-pitch session on 9/7. If that goes well, Atlanta will decide whether the next step is live batting practice or a Minor League game. The 9/1 transfer to the 60-day IL was procedural, well past his 8/22 eligibility date. Suárez hasn’t pitched since 6/19. |
| Matt Brash | Lat. Season over. A 9/3 MRI showed continued inflammation in the Grade 1 right lat strain with no structural damage, and Seattle shut him down for at least eight weeks. He had thrown bullpens on 8/15 and 8/29, with the club hoping for game action by mid-September. |
| Tyron Guerrero | Shoulder. No new updates since the 9/1 placement on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation. RosterResource lists no timetable as of 9/8, and he’s eligible on 9/16. |
| Jason Adam | Shoulder. Threw his third bullpen session off the Petco Park mound on 9/7. He resumed light catch from 90 feet on 8/17 after sitting seven weeks and said, “Felt clean, I felt no pain, so really good.” The next step is minor league game action. The MRI showed no structural damage (a subscapularis strain), and he was 2-2 with a 2.51 ERA over 36 appearances. |
| Justin Slaten | Elbow. Setback. Interim manager Chad Tracy said on 9/7 that Slaten has been shut down from throwing, per Gabrielle Starr. That follows Chris Cotillo’s 8/31 report that Slaten was “on-and-off” throwing with symptoms that hadn’t resolved. He went on the 15-day IL on 8/16, retroactive to 8/13; the MRI showed no structural damage. |
| Steven Okert | Hamstring. Placed on the 15-day IL on 9/4, retroactive to 9/1, with a right hamstring strain, per Chandler Rome. He landed on the list after not pitching in the White Sox series. Houston lists an expected return of 9/15, and he’s eligible on 9/16. |
| Sam Bachman | Forearm. Pitched two-thirds of an inning for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on 9/4, allowing no runs while walking two, striking out two, and reaching 99 mph with the fastball. He will make at least one more appearance. That followed an Arizona Bridge League outing on 9/1. |
| Jeremiah Estrada | Shoulder. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/26, retroactive to 8/25, with a right shoulder impingement, his third IL stint of 2026 with three different injuries. Manager Craig Stammen said the club is optimistic he returns “for the stretch run.” |
| Garrett Cleavinger | Forearm. Placed on the 15-day IL on 9/5 with left forearm tightness, per Marc Topkin. Cleavinger had been unsuccessfully trying to pitch through the condition, surrendering 10 runs over his last 8 2/3 innings, and the club is hopeful a prescribed period of rest resolves it. He had 15 holds by early July as Tampa Bay’s primary left-handed setup option. |
| Caleb Kilian | Oblique. Getting close to resuming throwing after three weeks shut down, interim manager Don Mattingly has not ruled out a return this season. Kilian suffered the left oblique strain on his final pitch of the 8/8 win at Toronto and went on the 15-day IL on 8/10; Mattingly called it a moderate strain at the time. |
| Hunter Harvey | Triceps. Continuing a throwing program at the Cubs’ Arizona camp but has not recovered well between bullpen sessions, and Craig Counsell said Harvey may be “running out of time” for a return in 2026. He threw a bullpen in Arizona on 8/1 after resuming throwing on 7/8. |
| Gavin Hollowell | Shoulder. Began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on 9/5, per Meghan Montemurro, his first game action since the 7/31 placement with right shoulder inflammation. Counsell said on 8/19 that Hollowell “ended up being shut down from throwing a little longer than anticipated” before resuming a program. |
| Huascar Brazobán | Lat. Began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte on 9/2, per James Fegan, a week after the 8/25 placement with a left lat strain. He’s eligible on 9/9. Brazobán last pitched 8/24 against Texas, came to Chicago from the Mets on 8/3, and has a 6.30 ERA over 10 appearances with the White Sox. |
| Peyton Gray | Elbow. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/31, retroactive to 8/30, with right elbow inflammation after feeling discomfort while throwing. Texas says he is not expected to be out for the remainder of the season but has set no timetable, and he’s eligible on 9/14. Gray last pitched on 8/29 at Milwaukee, allowing two runs in an inning, and has appeared in 48 games. |
| Colin Holderman | Wrist. The wrist flared up on a warmup pitch before his 9/3 relief appearance, and he went on the 15-day IL on 9/4, per Tim Stebbins. He has dealt with the same issue in recent seasons and intends to undergo a procedure after the season. He’s eligible on 9/19. |
| Matt Gage | Elbow. Setback. San Francisco pulled Gage off his rehab assignment and shut him down from throwing after he felt discomfort in the left elbow, reported 9/1 by Justice delos Santos. His last rehab outing came 8/22 with Triple-A Sacramento. |
| Grant Anderson | Biceps. Placed on the 15-day IL on 9/7 with right biceps inflammation, per Adam McCalvy. Anderson felt tightness after throwing back-to-back games in Cincinnati on 9/5 and 9/6 and was examined by two Reds doctors. No timetable has been set, and he’s eligible on 9/22. |
| Manuel Rodríguez | Back. Placed on the 15-day IL on 9/4, retroactive to 9/3, with a lower back strain. No timetable has been set, and he’s eligible on 9/18. Rodríguez had been back only since 8/23, when the Rays reinstated him from the 60-day IL following an elbow stress reaction. |
| Anthony Bender | Shin. Season over. Bender has discontinued throwing and will be reevaluated at the Jupiter Academy, with Miami listing an expected return of 2027. He had been scheduled to throw off a mound in Miami the weekend of 9/4 before a follow-up evaluation for lingering soreness following his 8/18 rehab appearance, and Craig Mish reported the shutdown on 9/7. |
| Orlando Ribalta | Forearm. Season over. Ribalta was unavailable on 9/6 with right forearm discomfort and was placed on the 15-day IL on 9/7, retroactive to 9/4. Washington lists an expected return of 2027 with MRI results still pending as of 9/7. |
| Edwin Uceta | Shoulder. Uceta had a PRP injection in July after a setback while playing catch, resumed throwing, then felt his symptoms return and was sent for another MRI. “Not ideal for him,” Kevin Cash said. Tampa Bay now lists an expected return of 2027. |
