Welcome back to a new week of Reliever Rankings!
Bryan Baker, Justin Bruihl, Dylan Dodd, Jordan Hicks, Nate Lavender, Dylan Lee, Trevor Megill, Riley O’Brien, and Tanner Scott each had three SV+HLD’s over the past week. Most of the regular names mentioned again, but it’s cool seeing Nate Lavender in the mix, and he certainly has the stuff to settle into the Mets top lefty role.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Interim Closer | Brandyn Garcia | 45% |
| Co-Interim Closer | Kevin Ginkel | 25% |
| Co-Interim Closer | Jonathan Loáisiga | 15% |
| Co-Interim Closer | Juan Morillo | 5% |
- Brandyn Garcia may not wind up with all the saves here in Arizona, but he’s still option 1A and the highest-leverage reliever for Lovullo to call on. It makes him better for holds leagues, but he’s still going to have save league value at least until Justin Martinez returns. Juan Morillo, by the way, has been great lately, but for whatever reason, he’s the one reliever Lovullo won’t turn to in the ninth for a save.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Hogan Harris | 60% |
| Setup Role | Elvis Alvarado | 20% |
| Setup Role | Luis Medina | 10% |
| Middle Relief | José Suarez | 5% |
- It hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing for Hogan Harris, but he does have five saves since the All-Star break, so at least we’ll take those and the strikeouts and hopefully not get too burned by the ratios.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Raisel Iglesias | 65% |
| Setup Role | Didier Fuentes | 20% |
| Setup Role | Dylan Lee | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Dylan Dodd | 5% |
- Raisel Iglesias has not been great since late May/early June, but he hasn’t been bad enough to flat-out lose the closer role yet. That could be coming though, and with the way Didier Fuentes has been throwing, it could make the decision a rather easy one.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Interim Closer | Yennier Cano | 50% |
| Co-Interim Closer | Andrew Kittredge | 25% |
| Setup Role | Rico Garcia | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Yaramil Hiraldo | 5% |
- Good news and bad news on the Orioles front. Yennier Cano has looked great recently, maybe the extension and guaranteed money is to thank, but either way, he’s throwing the ball the best in this bullpen right now and should get the bulk of the saves before (if?) Helsley or Bautista return. Rico Garcia HAD been looking better, and well, the last time out his stuff was way down, and I’m not sure how much trust we can have in him at this point.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Aroldis Chapman | 75% |
| Setup Role | Garrett Whitlock | 10% |
| Setup Role | Tyron Guerrero | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Justin Slaten | 5% |
- It appears as if Tyron Guerrero is locked into that secondary setup role at the moment, over Justin Slaten and Erik Miller. Miller should still see some hold chances (when he’s not opening), especially against tough left-handed pitchers, while Slaten may be more of a sixth inning/fireman type now. That can still have some value, but Guerrero looks like the safer bet at this point.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Interim Closer | Jacob Webb | 60% |
| Setup Role | Ryan Zeferjahn | 20% |
| Setup Role | Caleb Thielbar | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Trent Thornton | 5% |
- Jacob Webb is still the closer 1A option in this bullpen, and for good reason, as he’s been lights out for the past month or so now. IS there a chance he could even hang on to the closer role after Palencia returns?
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Grant Taylor | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Bryan Hudson | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Sean Newcomb | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Jordan Hicks | 10% |
- Sean Newcomb has been a rollercoaster, but he’s still a part of this closer committee, so there’s still some interest.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Emilio Pagán | 75% |
| Setup Role | Tejay Antone | 10% |
| Setup Role | Brock Burke | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Julian Garcia | 5% |
- Pagan over the past month holds a 1.00 ERA (2.01 SIERA), 0.67 WHIP, and 35.3% K-BB rate over nine innings as the stuff has been looking better and he’s locked into the closer role with next to no competition in Cincinnati.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Cade Smith | 85% |
| Setup Role | Hunter Gaddis | 5% |
| Setup Role | Colin Holderman | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Erik Sabrowski | 5% |
- Erik Sabrowski just can not find his command, and now has 12 walks to 14 strikeouts over 11.1 innings since returning from the IL (plus 9 earned runs and 15 hits). That’s a 1.715 ERA and 2.38 WHIP. Maybe we can try again next year with Sabrowski, but at this point I’m not sure he’s going to turn things around this year.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jordan Romano | 70% |
| Setup Role | Juan Mejia | 10% |
| Setup Role | Jimmy Herget | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Brennan Bernardino | 5% |
- Jordan Romano is the closer here, I guess, and you’d have to be extremely desperate in a very deep league to chase that.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Kenley Jansen | 70% |
| Setup Role | Kyle Finnegan | 10% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Holton | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Drew Sommers | 5% |
- Tyler Holton is coming off an excellent week that saw him also pick up a save and a hold. It’s thin in this bullpen, so there should be opportunity for the likes of Holton as well as newcomers Drew Sommers and Yilber Díaz perhaps.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Josh Hader | 80% |
| Setup Role | Bryan Abreu | 5% |
| Setup Role | Steven Okert | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Enyel De Los Santos | 5% |
- Bryan Abreu continues to throw the ball well, but there are still some inconsistencies with him. Overall, though, we have to like the way things are trending for him, and the team seems to agree, as he’s been seeing a lot of 8th-inning setup usage here.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Steven Cruz | 50% |
| Co-Closer? | Nate Pearson | 20% |
| Setup Role | John Schreiber | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Alex Lange | 10% |
- Steven Cruz has been pitching well, still giving up too many home runs, but also now he may potentially be sharing the closer role with Nate Pearson? I don’t get this team.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Samy Natera Jr | 50% |
| Setup Role | Ben Joyce | 25% |
| Setup Role | José Fermín | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Luke Murphy | 5% |
- Samy Natera Jr does appear to be the favorite for saves after all, as he should be, but that’s not to say that Ben Joyce hasn’t looked great, because he’s looked amazing since returning from the IL. Since the start of July, Natera holds a 2.70 ERA (1.56 SIERA), 0.84 WHIP, and a 44% K rate (37.5% K-BB) over 16.2 innings. That stat line includes a 3 hit, 4 earned run outing on the fourth of July against Boston, as that game has been more or less an outlier. Back to Joyce though, the fastball looks fantastic from him, and he’s mixing in that splitter and even showed a slider in his last outing. Just find a way to stay on the field now.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Edwin Díaz | 70% |
| Setup Role | Tanner Scott | 15% |
| Setup Role | Evan Phillips | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Alex Vesia | 5% |
- Edwin Díaz was better-ish his last time out (last night, that is), but I still have some concerns. It’s going to come down to command and sequencing, as the stuff does appear to be most of the way back at least. Lucky for him as well, Tanner Scott has not been great over this span either.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Pete Fairbanks | 75% |
| Setup Role | Michael Petersen | 10% |
| Setup Role | Calvin Faucher | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Zuber | 5% |
- Pete Fairbanks has now rolled off six straight scoreless outings, with a 9/2 K/BB ratio over that span and just one hit allowed. The fastball is in a great place at least, but I’m still not 100% confident with the slider and cutter.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Trevor Megill | 75% |
| Setup Role | Abner Uribe | 10% |
| Setup Role | Aaron Ashby | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Chad Patrick | 5% |
- I mentioned Chad Patrick last week, and he just continues to produce despite middling stuff. We’ll take the results for now and ask questions later, I guess. He should continue to see leverage work over Senzatela at least.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Yoendrys Gómez | 50% |
| Setup Role | Andrew Morris | 20% |
| Setup Role | Jeff Hoffman | 20% |
| Middle Relief | A.J. Minter | 5% |
- So Jeff Hoffman will not be the Twins closer, at least for now, as the Twins are sticking with Yoendrys Gómez in the ninth and Andrew Morris in the eighth still. For what it’s worth, Gómez’s stuff and velocity received a boost after the Hoffman trade, so perhaps the trade was a bit of a kick in the pants for Gómez, as he has been mediocre in June/July.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Interim Closer | Kodai Senga | 50% |
| Setup Role | Daniel Duarte | 20% |
| Setup Role | Nate Lavender | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Jefry Yan | 10% |
- Devin Williams was placed on the IL with a shoulder issue yesterday, clearing the way for none other than Kodai Senga to take over the closer role in the interim. He makes for an interesting reliever case, but is the stuff good enough to offset his terrible command?
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | David Bednar | 75% |
| Setup Role | Fernando Cruz | 10% |
| Setup Role | Brent Headrick | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Paul Blackburn | 5% |
- The Yankees’ inability to add relief depth (and actually trade away depth) leaves Paul Blackburn in a tough spot, as he should not be a go-to option in high-leverage situations, but here we are.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jhoan Duran | 85% |
| Setup Role | Jonathan Bowlan | 5% |
| Setup Role | Brooks Raley | 5% |
| Middle Relief | José Alvarado | 5% |
- Jonathan Bowlan is all that the Phillies have left behind Duran at this point, as Kilian landed on the IL yesterday, Orion Kerkering himself appears to be injured, and José Alvarado just remains mostly ineffective. Brooks Raley is what he is, and this could be fine with Bowlan in the eighth and Raley in the seventh (or vice versa based on matchups), but it sure would be nice to get something from Kerkering or Alvarado moving forward.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Mason Montgomery | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Luke Weaver | 30% |
| Co-Closer | Gregory Soto | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Camilo Doval | 5% |
- The Pirates have not had a save chance since Luke Weaver debuted so we still don’t know who to expect in the ninth inning next, but I’m now leaning more towards Montgomery since he’s been one of the best relievers in baseball the past month while Weaver’s stuff has come back down to earth (he was sitting 96-97 MPH in June/early July, but lately it’s been 94.5-95.5 MPH). What we do know is that Gregory Soto is out of the mix.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Mason Miller | 80% |
| Setup Role | Adrian Morejon | 10% |
| Setup Role | Jeremiah Estrada | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Bradgley Rodriguez | 5% |
- I’m still not 100% sold on this new Jeremiah Estrada, but the stuff is grading out well, and he’s getting plenty of swing and miss. I just don’t know if the command will be good enough to compensate for the fastball being down 2 MPH.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Dylan Smith | 60% |
| Setup Role | Sam Hentges | 10% |
| Setup Role | Keaton Winn | 10% |
| Middle Relief | JT Brubaker | 10% |
- Dylan Smith is acting as the Giants closer as expected, and even despite a blown save last night (tough luck), he should be relatively safe in that role considering the lack of competition.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Andrés Muñoz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Gabe Speier | 10% |
| Setup Role | Eduard Bazardo | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jose A. Ferrer | 5% |
- The Mariners really could use some help in front of Muñoz, and it is surprising they didn’t add a reliever at the deadline. I’d imagine they will be interested in claiming Paul Sewald.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Riley O’Brien | 70% |
| Setup Role | George Soriano | 10% |
| Setup Role | Ryne Stanek | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Caleb Ferguson | 5% |
- Riley O’Brien continues to make do, but he still appears to be a ticking time bomb as his stuff continues to deteriorate. Maybe he has two more months in him, but it’s too risky for me in holds leagues.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Bryan Baker | 80% |
| Setup Role | Kevin Kelly | 5% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Wells | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Garrett Cleavinger | 5% |
- Bryan Baker’s velocity was back to normal for one game last week, but then fell back down slightly. Still looks fine overall, and even since the All-Star break, he holds a 0.90 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and 27% K rate, so there’s no reason to think he can’t finish the season strong, right?
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jacob Latz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Peyton Gray | 10% |
| Setup Role | Robby Ahlstrom | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Alexander | 5% |
- Peyton Gray and Robby Ahlstrom have emerged as the top holds options here, it appears, and there’s some upside with each of them, but I also worry about how low the floor may be.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Louis Varland | 80% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Rogers | 10% |
| Setup Role | Mason Fluharty | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Braydon Fisher | 5% |
- Mason Fluharty has been much better since the All-Star break here, with a 1.93 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, and 29.4% K rate, but the walks are still an issue (although no walks over his past three outings). He should see some consistent hold chances as a secondary setup man here, although Braydon Fisher (or even Spencer Miles) could still factor in against tougher right-handed pockets.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Clayton Beeter | 60% |
| Setup Role | Orlando Ribalta | 20% |
| Setup Role | Yovanny Cruz | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Will Dion | 5% |
- It’s a shame that in all the Nationals bullpen chaos, somehow Orlando Ribalta only has two saves, and none since May. Since the start of July, he’s been a rock for this bullpen with a 2.53 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 32% K rate. Clayton Beeter has looked better as of late, but I’d still feel more confident in Ribalta at this point.
Injured List
| Daniel Palencia | Elbow. Rehab assignment underway at AAA. Counsell said he’s hopeful for a mid-August return, but Palencia has repeated steps in the program, and the Cubs want multiple rehab outings first. |
| Ryan Helsley | Elbow. A week into his throwing program and long tossing after starting on 7/31 at Camden Yards, still a couple weeks from getting on a mound. The MRI showed no UCL tear, but a 2026 return isn’t guaranteed until he throws at full intensity. |
| Devin Williams | Shoulder. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/10, retroactive to 8/8, with a shoulder strain. Williams missed time the prior week with right arm fatigue but returned (and allowed two runs). The Mets believe the strain is minor. |
| Justin Martinez | TJS. Began his rehab assignment at Single-A Visalia on 8/4 and worked two scoreless, hitless innings with three strikeouts and a walk across his first two outings. Lovullo said he’ll move to Triple-A Reno next for additional appearances. |
| Felix Bautista | Shoulder. Threw his first live batting practice on 8/4, a step up from the bullpens he began on 6/23. Elias said Bautista has been “throwing really, really well,” but Baltimore still has no timeline and will not push him in 2026. |
| Robert Suarez | Elbow. Weiss said in early August that Suarez still hasn’t thrown a bullpen and is only playing catch, roughly seven weeks after the IL placement. Testing showed no structural damage behind the elbow and forearm inflammation. |
| Anthony Bender | Shin. Threw a bullpen on 8/7. He was cleared to begin a throwing program right after the All-Star break and resumed throwing on 7/17. Miami has not set a timeline, and one may not emerge until he throws a few more bullpens. |
| Matt Brash | Lat. Wilson said Brash is “looming” closer to a bullpen session after several weeks of catch and long toss with no issues. He’s been out since the 6/10 placement with a Grade 1 right lat strain and still needs a mound session and a rehab assignment. |
| Sam Bachman | Forearm. Placed on the 15-day IL with forearm radial nerve inflammation. He faced two batters on 8/2, recording an out and walking a batter on four pitches before being pulled, and said afterward he was dealing with arm fatigue. |
| Jason Adam | Shoulder. San Diego is still waiting on the subscapularis to heal before he starts a throwing program. Adam said the shoulder is improving and laid out a path to late August, and that now looks like a best-case scenario, with September more likely. |
| Graham Ashcraft | Elbow. No new updates since he was cleared to throw from 105 feet on 7/20 at the Reds’ facility in Goodyear. A PRP injection earlier in July appears to have helped the UCL sprain heal, but he remains on the 60-day IL with a full build-up ahead. |
| Tony Santillan | Oblique. The follow-up MRI on 7/31 came back clean, and he’s moved into an expedited program that started with bullpen sides. He had thrown from 75 feet on flat ground on 7/24 with no issues. Santillan had set a goal of returning in August. |
| JoJo Romero | Appendicitis. He was set to throw his first bullpen and will need a few more bullpens plus a live BP before a rehab assignment. The Brewers have him returning to game action in mid-to-late August. |
| Brock Stewart | Shoulder. Placed on the 15-day IL on 7/31 with right shoulder discomfort; an MRI showed tendinitis. He was shut down from throwing for a few days with the hope of restarting the week of 8/3. Roberts called the move precautionary. |
| Caleb Kilian | Oblique. Placed on the 15-day IL with a left oblique strain after feeling a grab in his side on his second-to-last pitch on 8/9 against Toronto. Mattingly called it a moderate strain and gave no timeline, noting obliques “take a minute.” |
| Jakob Junis | Adductor. Placed on the 15-day IL on 7/30, with a left adductor strain, his second stint of the month after missing 7/1-7/17 with a right hip impingement. Schumaker said the injury didn’t improve over two nights after Junis threw an inning on 7/28. |
| Manuel Rodriguez | TJS. Threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts for Triple-A Durham on 8/8, with his sinker at 96.7 mph and slider at 88.2 mph. He’s made six rehab appearances in 2026 following August 2025 Tommy John surgery and appears close to activation. |
| Hunter Harvey | Triceps. Cleared to begin a rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League with a mid-August return the target. He’s been out since 4/12 with what was first called triceps inflammation and later diagnosed as a stress reaction near the right triceps. |
| Cole Sulser | Back. On the 15-day IL since 7/29, with lower back spasms, his second back-related stint of the year after a low back strain in May. Currently no timetable. |
| Gavin Hollowell | Shoulder. Placed on the 15-day IL with shoulder inflammation, which flared during the Cubs’ series in St. Louis. Counsell said the club needed to hit “pause” after Hollowell felt soreness in recent outings but the issue is not considered serious. |
| Carlos Estévez | Shoulder. Scheduled to begin a mound progression on 8/7 after starting a throwing program on 7/17. He still needs to face hitters and complete a rehab assignment before a return is realistic. He’s been limited to one appearance all season. |
| Austin Warren | Forearm. Rehab assignment moved up to Triple-A Syracuse on 8/4 after he opened at Single-A St. Lucie. He landed on the IL with a forearm strain after discomfort in a 7/7 appearance against Kansas City; the MRI showed no ligament damage. |
| Joel Peguero | Hamstring. Threw a 15-pitch live bullpen on 7/31 in Arizona, with another scheduled for 8/4. No dated update has surfaced since. He landed on the 60-day IL on 6/1 with a left hamstring strain (the same issue that delayed the start of his season). |
| Andrew Nardi | Rib. As of late July, he was two to three weeks from beginning a rehab assignment. He remains on the 60-day IL, retroactive to 5/28, with a significant stress reaction in the left ribcage that McCullough pegged at roughly three months. |
| Nick Mears | Shoulder. Scheduled to begin a mound progression the week of 8/10, and possibly starting a rehab assignment if the next few days go cleanly. He resumed throwing on 7/29 after a scan revealed a right lat strain on top of the shoulder impingement. |
