Welcome back to a new week of Reliever Rankings!
Bryan Baker, David Bednar, Paul Blackburn, Aroldis Chapman, Hunter Gaddis, Tanner Scott, and Cade Smith each had three SV+HLD’s over the past week.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Justin Martinez | 50% |
| Setup Role | Brandyn Garcia | 25% |
| Setup Role | Juan Morillo | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Kevin Ginkel | 10% |
- Justin Martinez has only thrown two innings since returning from the IL, but the stuff looks as it did prior to surgery, and the command was better his second time out. The closer role is wide open here at the moment, and I’d expect Martinez to take the role back at some point, possibly as early as this week.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Hogan Harris | 50% |
| Setup Role | Elvis Alvarado | 30% |
| Setup Role | Luis Medina | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Scott Blewett | 5% |
- Elvis Alvarado has been pitching better as of late and is showing some signs of regaining feel for that slider. This may be more of a co-closer situation at the moment, but I still get the sense the A’s prefer Harris in the ninth.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer (for now) | Raisel Iglesias | 50% |
| Setup Role | Didier Fuentes | 20% |
| Setup Role | Dylan Lee | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Dylan Dodd | 5% |
- Raisel Iglesias continues to trend the wrong way, and the stuff has fallen off a cliff lately, so the question is, who is the next man up here? Didier Fuentes and Dylan Lee both deserve a shot at the role the way they’ve pitched this season, but I’d still lean towards the right-handed Fuentes, which keeps Lee in the 8th inning.
- Dylan Dodd hasn’t exactly been terrible lately, but he is allowing a lot of baserunners with a 1.44 WHIP over his past nine innings (12.5% K-BB and 5.10 xFIP). There’s solid left-handed depth in this bullpen as well, so any other issues from Dodd could result in losing hold chances (which he has just two over the previous 20 days, with the last one coming on 8/12).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Rico Garcia | 40% |
| Setup Role | Andrew Kittredge | 30% |
| Setup Role | Yennier Cano | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Alex Hoppe | 5% |
- This revolving door in the closer role has to stop at some point, right? To me, Rico Garcia (as long as he continues to throw the ball like he has the past week) should be the guy the rest of the way, barring some miracle return from Félix Bautista (the first rehab outing was ugly) or Ryan Helsley (a ways away).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Aroldis Chapman | 80% |
| Setup Role | Erik Miller | 5% |
| Setup Role | Tyron Guerrero | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Greg Weissert | – |
- Tyron Guerrero has been fine since his meltdown a few weeks ago, so why is he falling? The Red Sox should get Garrett Whitlock and/or Justin Slaten back soon, but more importantly, Guerrero still doesn’t have a secondary pitch. Over his past three outings (since the 8/12 fiasco), he’s thrown 93% sinkers and recorded just one strikeout. I need a little more swing and miss.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Daniel Palencia | 50% |
| Setup Role | Jacob Webb | 30% |
| Setup Role | Ryan Zeferjahn | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Caleb Thielbar | 5% |
- Daniel Palencia looked pretty good over the weekend in his first appearance since June, while Jacob Webb gave up three runs and a walkoff homer on Saturday. I’m still a big believer in Webb, but I also feel like Palencia gets his job back sooner rather than later. Either way, Palencia’s presence pushes Ryan Zeferjahn down the pecking order.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Grant Taylor | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Bryan Hudson | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Jordan Hicks | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Sean Newcomb | 10% |
- Sean Newcomb has been fine, but he’s also been opening a lot of games, 3 in the past 10 days, to be exact. I’m fine with that, as it gives Hagen Smith more opportunities later in games.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer (if healthy) | Emilio Pagán | 55% |
| Setup Role | Tony Santillan | 25% |
| Setup Role | Luis Mey | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Julian Garcia | 5% |
- It’s tough to get a read on this bullpen right now as Tony Santillan just returned from the IL, but Emilio Pagán may be headed there shortly. Santillan would be the logical replacement if needed, but Luis Mey’s value is skyrocketing right now, and perhaps the team would be interested in seeing how he’d fare in that role.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Cade Smith | 85% |
| Setup Role | Hunter Gaddis | 5% |
| Setup Role | Erik Sabrowski | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Colin Holderman | 5% |
- I think we can declare Erik Sabrowski officially back now, as he has not walked anyone over his past five outings while striking out eight and allowing just one hit. This is the April version of Sabrowski we’ve been waiting to return.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jordan Romano | 70% |
| Setup Role | Juan Mejia | 10% |
| Setup Role | Jimmy Herget | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Brennan Bernardino | 5% |
- Jordan Romano is the closer here, I guess, and you’d have to be extremely desperate in a very deep league to chase that.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Kenley Jansen | 60% |
| Setup Role | Drew Sommers | 20% |
| Setup Role | Kyle Finnegan | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Holton | 5% |
- Kenley Jansen is still hanging in there as the Tigers closer for now, and that could be due to the fact that there is no competition. OR there wasn’t until now because Drew Sommers deserves a chance. Sommers stuff isn’t off the charts, but he’s finding a way to miss bats at an elite rate right now.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Josh Hader | 80% |
| Setup Role | Bryan Abreu | 5% |
| Setup Role | Steven Okert | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Bennett Sousa | 5% |
- Enyel De Los Santos continues to have consistency issues, so this team is still searching for that second right-handed reliever they can trust. Maybe it’s AJ Blubaugh, but he’s still allowing a lot of baserunners as well.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Steven Cruz | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Nate Pearson | 30% |
| Setup Role | Craig Kimbrel | 20% |
| Middle Relief | John Schreiber | 5% |
- I’m not sure what to make of this closer situation anymore with Steven Cruz vs. Nate Pearson (why not add Craig Kimbrel to the mix as well?), so it’s best just to avoid as they are all low upside options anyway.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Ben Joyce | 70% |
| Setup Role | José Fermín | 10% |
| Setup Role | Ryan Watson | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Luke Murphy | 5% |
- I was bummed to see Samy Natera Jr. land on the IL, but the silver lining is that we get Ben Joyce in the closer role all by himself (just not on back-to-back days).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Tanner Scott | 70% |
| Setup Role | Evan Phillips | 10% |
| Setup Role | Brock Stewart | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Edgardo Henriquez | 5% |
- We are back to the question of who is the top right-handed setup guy in this bullpen, as all three of Edgardo Henriquez, Brock Stewart (welcome back), and Evan Phillips have seen setup usage lately. Stewart has looked good since returning from the IL, but is he actually going to stay healthy? Phillips is still trying to figure out his sweeper, but he’s looked a bit better the last few times out. Henriquez wins this battle for me as he’s allowed just one run on three hits over his past 8.2 innings to go with a 13/1 K/BB ratio.
- And on the other side, is Jack Dreyer closing the gap on Alex Vesia as the top left-handed set-up option? Dreyer has definitely been better than Vesia lately, but Roberts tends to favor his veterans when they are throwing well.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Interim Co-Closer | Calvin Faucher | 40% |
| Interim Co-Closer | Michael Petersen | 20% |
| Interim Co-Closer | Josh Ekness | 20% |
| Interim Co-Closer | Tyler Zuber | 10% |
- Pete Fairbanks is back on the IL with another nerve issue, and the Marlins did not name an interim closer, so expect another committee approach. The last time Fairbanks missed time, the Marlins picked up four saves while he was out, all by different pitchers. If I had to favor anyone, it’d be Calvin Faucher right now, but Josh Ekness has looked great lately, and Michael Petersen has bounced back nicely from last week’s debacle.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Trevor Megill | 75% |
| Setup Role | Aaron Ashby | 10% |
| Setup Role | Chad Patrick | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Antonio Senzatela | 5% |
- Not much movement here, but this bullpen should get JoJo Romero and Abner Uribe back soon to add even more depth. DL Hall has been pitching well as of late, though, and his velocity has been up over his past six outings in which he holds a 0.96 ERA, 0.32 WHIP, and 39% K rate over 9.1 innings.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Yoendrys Gómez | 50% |
| Setup Role | Jeff Hoffman | 20% |
| Setup Role | A.J. Minter | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Andrew Morris | 5% |
- The clock may be striking midnight on Andrew Morris and Yoendrys Gómez here, although I’m willing to give Gómez the benefit of the doubt for yesterday’s outing. Morris, on the other hand, is just dealing with his luck running out.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Interim Closer | Kodai Senga | 55% |
| Setup Role | Daniel Duarte | 20% |
| Setup Role | Austin Warren | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Nate Lavender | 10% |
- Kodai Senga has struggled over the past three outings, but we have no news on Devin Williams returning yet, and it sounds like Senga is fairly safe in the closer role for now. I know most people would point to Daniel Duarte as the next man up, but Nate Lavender deserves some love here too, even if he is left-handed.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | David Bednar | 80% |
| Setup Role | Fernando Cruz | 5% |
| Setup Role | Brent Headrick | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Paul Blackburn | 5% |
- Paul Blackburn holds a 0.49 ERA, 0.76 WHIP over the past nine weeks (37 IP), but I mean, we all can see this isn’t sustainable, right? That comes with a 3.74 SIERA, 12.7% K-BB, and 10.5% SwStr rate, not to mention a 91 Stuff+ which ranks 162 out of 173 qualified relievers. Vargas Rule it all you want, but it likely won’t end well.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jhoan Duran | 85% |
| Setup Role | Jonathan Bowlan | 5% |
| Setup Role | Brooks Raley | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Orion Kerkering | 5% |
- Brooks Raley has been a key addition to this Phillies pitching staff, but getting Orion Kerkering back on track lately and the emergence of Alex McFarlane have me feeling better about the bullpen as a whole.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Mason Montgomery | 70% |
| Setup Role | Luke Weaver | 10% |
| Setup Role | Gregory Soto | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Camilo Doval | 5% |
- The gap between Mason Montgomery and Luke Weaver continues to widen as Weaver has been hit or miss with the Pirates so far. Montgomery, on the other hand, is truly taking off finally.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Mason Miller | 80% |
| Setup Role | Adrian Morejon | 10% |
| Setup Role | Bradgley Rodriguez | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jeremiah Estrada | 5% |
- Bradgley Rodriguez is only 22 years old, by the way, but he’s been a stable, veteran-esque presence in this bullpen in front of the law firm of Miller and Morejon this season. Since being recalled from his short “rest” back in June, Rodriguez holds a 1.99 ERA (2.38 SIERA), 0.88 WHIP, and 27% K-BB rate.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Dylan Smith | 70% |
| Setup Role | Carson Seymour | 10% |
| Setup Role | Sam Hentges | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Ryan Walker | 5% |
- Dylan Smith is acting as the Giants closer as expected, and he should be relatively safe in that role considering the lack of competition.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Andrés Muñoz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Gabe Speier | 10% |
| Setup Role | Eduard Bazardo | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jose A. Ferrer | 5% |
- While he has not been as dominant as last season, Gabe Speier has at least been fairly consistent since the start of May, with a 2.38 ERA and 0.93 WHIP over 22.2 innings, but it comes with just a 20% K rate. Just one of many World Baseball Classic relievers having a down season.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Riley O’Brien | 75% |
| Setup Role | George Soriano | 5% |
| Setup Role | Ryne Stanek | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Luis Gastelum | 5% |
- I had been calling Riley O’Brien a ticking time bomb for a while now, and well, that bomb finally exploded on Sunday afternoon. The question now is, how does he (and the team) respond to it?
- I know George Soriano and Ryne Stanek have been in setup roles for a long time now, but Luis Gastelum deserves a shot over both at this point (and perhaps a shot at the ninth if O’Brien continues to struggle).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Bryan Baker | 80% |
| Setup Role | Kevin Kelly | 5% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Wells | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Garrett Cleavinger | 5% |
- Garrett Cleavinger’s past two outings have me back in on him (tentatively), but it’s still a far cry from how dominant he was last season.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jacob Latz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Chase Silseth | 5% |
| Setup Role | Robby Ahlstrom | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jakob Junis | 5% |
- I thought Jakob Junis‘ return would clarify the bullpen situation in front of Jacob Latz, but I’m still unsure who they trust in high-leverage situations right now. It looks like Chase Silseth may be the top option for now, and maybe Robby Ahlstrom is still in the mix? Peyton Gray seems out, and Junis too, maybe? Cole Winn has been pitching better lately; maybe he can get another shot?
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Louis Varland | 80% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Rogers | 10% |
| Setup Role | Spencer Miles | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Braydon Fisher | 5% |
- Mason Fluharty continues to pitch well, but he still has just two holds since the start of July to show for it (and where have the strikeouts gone?).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Clayton Beeter | 50% |
| Setup Role | Orlando Ribalta | 25% |
| Setup Role | Will Dion | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Jake Bird | 5% |
- I’m not sure what Will Dion’s role is or what it should be, but to me, he either needs to be a starter (bulk guy if you must) or, at this point, why not work him into the closer role? He’s one of the best arms on this roster at the moment.
Injured List
| Edwin Díaz | Neck. An MRI on 8/19 came back clean with “no additional damage”. Roberts said on 8/22 that Díaz will return in a lower-leverage role, a “softer landing”, with the ninth inning something he’d have to reclaim, and he threw a bullpen that same day. |
| Ryan Helsley | Elbow. Threw his first bullpen session on 8/23, about 15-20 pitches with offspeed mixed in, and is lined up for another this week. That’s his first mound work since the 7/11 diagnosis of inflammation around the UCL with no structural damage to the ligament, and it tracks with what Helsley said on 8/9 about being a couple of weeks from a mound. |
| Devin Williams | Shoulder. No new updates since the 8/10 placement on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder strain, which followed a stretch of arm fatigue. Anthony DiComo reported the Mets were optimistic about a relatively brief absence, but Williams has yet to start throwing. |
| Félix Bautista | Shoulder. Began a rehab assignment at Double-A Chesapeake on 8/23, his first game action since July 2025, and it showed (0.1 innings, one hit, three runs and three walks). Triple-A Norfolk is next, and he’ll need several more outings before reinstatement is considered. |
| Pete Fairbanks | Hand. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/25 with nerve irritation in the right hand, a day after he left the ninth inning against Boston with a trainer having walked the only batter he faced. He is scheduled to see a specialist on 8/25, and no timetable has been set. It’s the same issue that cost him an IL stint beginning 4/28. |
| Robert Suarez | Elbow. Suarez has stretched his throwing program out to 100 feet to build arm strength and could begin bullpen sessions soon, with Walt Weiss saying the step after bullpens is a rehab assignment. Hopeful he returns this season. |
| Garrett Whitlock | Elbow. Whitlock is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on 8/26 in Miami and has a chance to skip a rehab assignment and be activated as soon as this weekend. He resumed throwing on 8/19, and Boston never sent him for an MRI, with Whitlock saying, “I don’t think there’s anything structurally wrong with it.” |
| Abner Uribe | Forearm. Began a rehab assignment with High-A Wisconsin on 8/25 and likely needs no more than an outing or two before being reinstated. He threw a bullpen on 8/18, and the MRI never showed anything serious after the 8/14 IL placement. |
| Samy Natera Jr. | Back. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/20, retroactive to 8/17, with lower back spasms. Natera had been listed day-to-day on 8/19 with a tight back that didn’t start bothering him until 8/15. |
| Matt Brash | Lat. Transferred to the 60-day IL on 8/21 to open a 40-man spot, a paper move that does not change his timeline. He threw off a mound on 8/15 for the first time since the injury and is trending toward a return to Seattle’s bullpen in early September. |
| Jason Adam | Shoulder. Played light catch from 90 feet on 8/17, his first throwing since going down, and said afterward, “Felt clean, I felt no pain, so really good”. The 7/7 MRI showed no major structural damage. |
| Justin Slaten | Elbow. The MRI showed no structural damage, but Slaten remains without a clear timetable. Slaten had reportedly been pitching through forearm and elbow discomfort for a stretch before Boston decided he needed rest. |
| Anthony Bender | Shin. Setback. His rehab assignment was paused on 8/21 after he reported soreness in the right shin during his first outing with Triple-A Jacksonville, and he returned to Miami to be examined. |
| Sam Bachman | Forearm. Bachman has yet to resume mound work as of 8/24, roughly two weeks after being cleared to throw and play catch out to 60 feet on 8/10. Bullpens and live hitters are both still ahead, pushing any return to early-to-mid September. |
| JoJo Romero | Appendicitis. Began a rehab assignment with High-A Wisconsin on 8/25 after throwing live BP on 8/21. He should be activated as soon as September rolls around. |
| Caleb Kilian | Oblique. No new updates since the 8/10 placement on the 15-day IL with a left oblique strain. Interim manager Don Mattingly called it a moderate strain and said Kilian would be out “for a while,” and while he’s eligible on 8/25, he appears likely to miss more than the minimum. |
| Graham Ashcraft | Elbow. The Reds sent Ashcraft to Triple-A Louisville on 8/25 to begin a rehab assignment, his first game action since late May. He avoided surgery on the right UCL sprain after a 6/2 PRP injection and clean re-imaging on 6/30, and he’ll likely need a handful of rehab outings before being reinstated, given the length of the layoff. |
| Hunter Harvey | Triceps. Craig Counsell said on 8/19 that Harvey’s rehab “hasn’t come along as hoped”, and he isn’t close to facing hitters or heading out on a rehab assignment. He threw a bullpen in Arizona on 8/1 after resuming throwing on 7/8. |
| Cole Sulser | Back. Threw a clean inning for Triple-A Durham on 8/19, described as the final step before rejoining Tampa Bay’s bullpen, after facing hitters on 8/14 and 8/17. He’s been out since the 7/29 placement, retroactive to 7/26, with lower back spasms. |
| Gavin Hollowell | Shoulder. Counsell said on 8/19 that Hollowell has resumed a throwing program but offered no specifics, adding that he “ended up being shut down from throwing a little longer than anticipated.” No rehab assignment has been scheduled. |
| Carlos Estévez | Shoulder. Pitched in a game at Kansas City’s Arizona complex on 8/22, retiring four of the five hitters he faced with increased velocity, per Joel Penfield, and he’s expected to get another complex outing before a formal rehab assignment. |
| Blake Treinen | Elbow. Opened a rehab assignment with Single-A Ontario on 8/15, throwing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts and no baserunners in his first game action since 6/19. The 8/11 transfer to the 60-day IL was a paper move that cleared a 40-man spot. |
| Nick Mears | Shoulder. Setback. MLB.com reported on 8/18 that Mears suffered another setback and would undergo further testing that week, halting a build-up that had reached scheduled bullpen work. It’s at least his fourth setback of 2026. |
| Edwin Uceta | Shoulder. Playing catch from 75 feet as of 8/14, per MLB.com, with a return unlikely before September and several hurdles still to clear. He’s working back from a right shoulder impingement dating to February and a subsequent subscapularis strain. |
| Robert Garcia | Shoulder. Skip Schumaker said Garcia threw two bullpen sessions last week at the Rangers’ Arizona facility, and he could advance to live batting practice this week. The injury is specifically left rotator cuff inflammation, and Texas is now hopeful he will rejoin the bullpen in September. |
