Welcome back to a new week of Reliever Rankings!
Bryan Abreu, Dylan Dodd, Josh Hader, Trent Harris, Alex Hoppe, Andrew Kittredge, Steven Okert, Emilio Pagan, and Carson Seymour each had three SV+HLDs over the past week.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Justin Martinez | 50% |
| Co-Closer | Brandyn Garcia | 20% |
| Co-Closer | Juan Morillo | 10% |
| Co-Closer | Kevin Ginkel | 10% |
- Justin Martinez does not have a save since returning from the IL, but the team only has two over that span, with one going to Ginkel (he faced one batter in the ninth) and one to Morillo (just his 2nd of the season and Martinez was unavailable). Martinez fastball is the best it’s looked so, that’s not the issue or hold up. The secondaries and command could use some improvement, but I think he looks ready to take over the ninth inning again.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Elvis Alvarado | 50% |
| Co-Closer | Hogan Harris | 30% |
| Setup Role | Luis Medina | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Scott Blewett | 5% |
- Elvis Alvarado now has 3 of the team’s past four 4 saves, with three outings in a row contributing to saves prior to his last one (he pitched the ninth with the A’s down 2 runs). It’s still most likely a co-closer situation with Harris, but Alvarado has moved into that 1A role again.
- And at what point does Luis Medina factor into that committee? He’s coming off a great August with a 1.54 ERA and 35.4% K rate (but a 1.20 WHIP thanks to a 12.5% walk rate).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Raisel Iglesias | 55% |
| Setup Role | Didier Fuentes | 25% |
| Setup Role | Dylan Lee | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Dylan Dodd | 5% |
- The second half of August was one to forget for Dylan Lee, but the good news is everything looks fine; he just may be tipping his stuff right now. It sounds like it’s something that can be fixed, so I’m not overly worried. If he does continue to struggle, they can always turn to Dylan Dodd in that top lefty setup role.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Andrew Kittredge | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Rico Garcia | 30% |
| Co-Closer | Yennier Cano | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Alex Hoppe | 5% |
- Another week and a new closer at the top of the depth chart in Baltimore, as we are back to Andrew Kittredge in the role. So it goes, I guess.
- We haven’t seen much of Yennier Cano recently, but it does look like he may be back in that right-handed specialist role he thrived in earlier in the season. It’s just not always a great source for holds.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Aroldis Chapman | 80% |
| Setup Role | Garrett Whitlock | 5% |
| Setup Role | Erik Miller | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Wyatt Olds | 5% |
- Garrett Whitlock returned this past weekend, which is a huge boost for this bullpen, especially with Tyron Guerrero hitting the IL today. Guerrero just needs to get healthy (and hopefully find a second pitch) for October.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Daniel Palencia | 50% |
| Co-Closer | Jacob Webb | 40% |
| Setup Role | Ryan Zeferjahn | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Caleb Thielbar | 5% |
- It’s almost like there’s some curse on the Cubs that when Daniel Palencia is on the active roster, they can not pick up saves as a team. The good news is Palencia has looked good since returning from the IL (the numbers are deceiving). Jacob Webb has struggled lately, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him get the next save (if one arises this week).
- Ryan Zeferjahn looked much better in his last outing; if that continues and he can get back into a high-leverage role, he’ll move back up.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Co-Closer | Grant Taylor | 40% |
| Co-Closer | Bryan Hudson | 30% |
| Co-Closer | Sean Newcomb | 10% |
| Co-Closer | Jordan Hicks | 10% |
- Bryan Hudson has picked up the past two saves for the White Sox and was mostly productive in August. It’s looking more and more like he and Taylor are running the later innings here, with Newcomb opening a bunch and giving bulk innings, and Jordan Hicks struggling lately.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Emilio Pagán | 75% |
| Setup Role | Tony Santillan | 10% |
| Setup Role | Luis Mey | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Julian Garcia | 5% |
- Emilio Pagán velocity bounced back this past week, but the stuff still remains down for him, so I’m still a bit concerned for him in September, especially given the Reds have the hardest schedule remaining and setup man Tony Santillan does not look good right now.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Cade Smith | 85% |
| Setup Role | Hunter Gaddis | 5% |
| Setup Role | Erik Sabrowski | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Colin Holderman | 5% |
- Colin Holderman finished August with a 6.97 ERA, 1.74 WHIP, and 16% K rate. It was a great first half for Holderman, but not sure what’s left.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jordan Romano | 70% |
| Setup Role | Brennan Bernardino | 10% |
| Setup Role | Jimmy Herget | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Juan Mejia | 5% |
- Jordan Romano is the closer here, I guess, and you’d have to be extremely desperate in a very deep league to chase that.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Kenley Jansen | 70% |
| Setup Role | Drew Sommers | 10% |
| Setup Role | Kyle Finnegan | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Holton | 5% |
- Drew Sommers only has four holds over the past month, which isn’t all his fault, but he could definitely use a better role in this bullpen (and he deserves it).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Josh Hader | 80% |
| Setup Role | Bryan Abreu | 5% |
| Setup Role | Steven Okert | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Bennett Sousa | 5% |
- AJ Blubaugh may become that secondary right-handed setup guy in this bullpen, as he put together a nice August with ratios under one and a 25% K-BB rate. I’d love to see the stuff be a bit more consistent for him, though, but hopefully he can finish strong here over the final month.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| C0-Closer | Steven Cruz | 50% |
| C0-Closer | Nate Pearson | 25% |
| Setup Role | Craig Kimbrel | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Alex Lange | 5% |
- Talk about inconsistent, Steven Cruz did not have his best stuff for much of August, but his last time out, we may have seen the best version of Cruz. Can he build on that, or was that just a one-off?
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| C0-Closer | Ben Joyce | 50% |
| C0-Closer | Samy Natera Jr. | 30% |
| Setup Role | José Fermín | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Ryan Watson | 5% |
- Ben Joyce’s last outing was ugly, and the team should get Samy Natera Jr. back from the IL this week, so now we have legit competition for that closer role. I still believe in Joyce, and as long as he is healthy and throwing 101+ MPH, he deserves your attention, but the volatile command and lack of a consistent second pitch make me think I was too ambitious with his previous rankings.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Tanner Scott | 70% |
| Setup Role | Evan Phillips | 10% |
| Setup Role | Edgardo Henriquez | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Brock Stewart | 5% |
- Edgardo Henriquez and Evan Phillips both had great weeks, and I’m hoping there’s room for both to pick up holds (and perhaps Stewart too) in this deep bullpen.
- Alex Vesia hasn’t allowed a run over his past four outings, but he has just 1 K over that span. He has also had just one hold over the past month.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Interim Co-Closer | Calvin Faucher | 25% |
| Interim Co-Closer | Michael Petersen | 25% |
| Interim Co-Closer | Tyler Zuber | 20% |
| Interim Co-Closer | Josh Ekness | 20% |
- Saves since Fairbanks went on the IL…this bullpen has zero saves, so we are still waiting to see how things shake out.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Trevor Megill | 75% |
| Setup Role | Abner Uribe | 10% |
| Setup Role | Aaron Ashby | 5% |
| Middle Relief | JoJo Romero | 5% |
- JoJo Romero and Abner Uribe are back this week, so that could be bad news for everyone except Megill and maybe Ashby. It will be interesting to see how Romero is used.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Yoendrys Gómez | 55% |
| Setup Role | Jeff Hoffman | 20% |
| Setup Role | A.J. Minter | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Andrew Morris | 5% |
- Yoendrys Gómez is still the closer in Minnesota, but is he on thin ice at this point? Over the past two months (22 innings), he holds a respectable 3.68 ERA, but that comes with a 5.32 xFIP, 1.55 WHIP, and 4% K-BB rate. I’m just not sure they fully trust Hoffman or Minter over him yet.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Interim Closer | Kodai Senga | 55% |
| Setup Role | Daniel Duarte | 15% |
| Setup Role | Dedniel Nunez | 15% |
| Middle Relief | Nate Lavender | 10% |
- Nate Lavender has yet to allow a run since being called up, and also has 7 holds now while holding a 27% K-BB rate. He’s not overpowering and won’t wow you with stuff, but it’s an above-average arsenal with good command.
- Dedniel Nunez is starting to look more and more like himself. Keep an eye on him in deeper and keeper leagues.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | David Bednar | 80% |
| Setup Role | Brent Headrick | 5% |
| Setup Role | Paul Blackburn | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Tim Hill | 5% |
- Brent Headrick dealt with his toughest month yet in August, finishing with a 4.73 ERA and 1.73 WHIP…but the good news is he still held a 34% K rate, and there’s no way that .500 BABIP sticks around.
- Paul Blackburn will be one of the team’s top setup men moving forward now that Fernando Cruz is out, and that’s a scary thought, but he has more than held his own so far, so go ahead and Vargas Rule it.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jhoan Duran | 85% |
| Setup Role | Jonathan Bowlan | 5% |
| Setup Role | Brooks Raley | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Orion Kerkering | 5% |
- Every time it looks like Orion Kerkering might be turning the corner, we get a couple of blegh outings from him with his stuff being down. A week from now, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Alex McFarlane overtakes him in that secondary setup role.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Mason Montgomery | 70% |
| Setup Role | Luke Weaver | 10% |
| Setup Role | Gregory Soto | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Camilo Doval | 5% |
- Mason Montgomery now holds a 1.33 ERA (0.79 xFIP), 0.63 WHIP, and 52% K rate since introducing his sinker back on June 23rd (27 IP, 100 TBF). Just ridiculous stuff.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Mason Miller | 80% |
| Setup Role | Adrian Morejon | 10% |
| Setup Role | Bradgley Rodriguez | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Yuki Matsui | 5% |
- Bradgley Rodriguez had a rough outing on Saturday, but it was great to see the Padres still go to him in a hold situation on Sunday, and he bounced back nicely.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Dylan Smith | 70% |
| Setup Role | Carson Seymour | 10% |
| Setup Role | Trent Harris | 10% |
| Middle Relief | Reiver Sanmartin | 5% |
- Dylan Smith is acting as the Giants closer as expected, and he should be relatively safe in that role considering the lack of competition.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Andrés Muñoz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Gabe Speier | 10% |
| Setup Role | Eduard Bazardo | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Jose A. Ferrer | 5% |
- Gabe Speier is throwing harder lately, but he’s still just not the same guy we saw in 2025, unfortunately.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Riley O’Brien | 75% |
| Setup Role | Ryne Stanek | 5% |
| Setup Role | George Soriano | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Luis Gastelum | 5% |
- Luis Gastelum walked two and gave up a hit in his last outing, but his crazy strikeout streak continues as he now holds a 47% K rate over his past 13.2 IP (with a 1.44 xFIP and 0.73 WHIP), yet no holds.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Bryan Baker | 80% |
| Setup Role | Kevin Kelly | 5% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Wells | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Garrett Cleavinger | 5% |
- August was more volatile for Garrett Cleavinger than we’d like to see, with a 7.88 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, and a 13.5% K-BB rate, but I don’t think he’s fully fallen out of favor in that bullpen quite yet.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Jacob Latz | 80% |
| Setup Role | Chase Silseth | 5% |
| Setup Role | Jakob Junis | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Tyler Alexander | 5% |
- Now Peyton Gray and Cole Winn are headed to the IL. It’s been a revolving door of setup men this season in Texas. Poor Jacob Latz (and Latz managers).
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer | Louis Varland | 80% |
| Setup Role | Tyler Rogers | 10% |
| Setup Role | Mason Fluharty | 5% |
| Middle Relief | Spencer Miles | 5% |
- Tyler Rogers still holds a sub two ERA, but under the hood, this is one of his worst seasons to date, similar to his 2022, just more luck on his side.
| CLOSER SITUATION | ||
|---|---|---|
| Role | Pitcher | Save Chances |
| Closer? | Clayton Beeter | 45% |
| Setup Role | Erik Tolman | 25% |
| Setup Role | Orlando Ribalta | 20% |
| Middle Relief | Brad Lord | 5% |
- Of course, as soon as I trust Orlando Ribalta, he goes out and allows four earned. I’m not totally out on him as a secondary closer option here, but Erik Tolman has definitely caught my eye, especially after yesterday’s two-inning save against the Marlins.
Injured List
| Edwin Díaz | Neck. Díaz will likely throw another live session in the coming week and then go out on a rehab assignment, Dave Roberts said on 9/1, per Jack Harris, a longer runway than the early-September return the Dodgers had been targeting. Roberts said that Díaz will return in a lower-leverage role (a “softer landing”) with the ninth inning something he’d have to reclaim. |
| Ryan Helsley | Elbow. Threw his first bullpen on 8/23, roughly 15-20 pitches with offspeed mixed in, and was lined up for another this week, his first mound work since the diagnosis. He’s on the 60-day IL and passed his 8/29 eligibility date without being activated. |
| Devin Williams | Shoulder. Began playing catch on 8/29 for the first time since the Mets shut him down, per Anthony DiComo, the start of a throwing progression that should have Williams back in September. He remains on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder strain retroactive to 8/8. |
| Félix Bautista | Shoulder. Craig Albernaz said on 8/31 that Bautista would not be coming up the following day and needed more rehab work. He began the assignment with Double-A Chesapeake on 8/23, his first game action since 7/20/25, touching 97 mph but struggling with command, and has moved to Triple-A Norfolk for more outings. |
| Pete Fairbanks | Arm. Fairbanks was doing mound work on 9/1, per Christina De Nicola, his first reported mound step since the placement. He went on the IL on 8/25 with median nerve irritation in the right arm, a day after he left the ninth inning against Boston, and he’s eligible to return on 9/9. It’s the same nerve issue that cost him a stint beginning 4/28. |
| Robert Suarez | Elbow. Atlanta transferred Suarez to the 60-day IL on 9/1 to open 40-man spots, a procedural move that Grant McAuley said leaves Suarez likely three weeks from returning. Suarez said on 8/31 that he’ll throw two bullpens, the first on 9/1, before the Braves decide his next step, adding that he’s had no pain or discomfort this time and expects to be back with the team soon. |
| Matt Brash | Lat. Threw a bullpen of roughly 15-20 pitches on 8/29 and was scheduled for another in Boston, per Ryan Divish, who added that game action by mid-September is the club’s hope. That follows his first mound work on 8/15 and the 8/21 transfer to the 60-day IL to open a 40-man spot, a paper move. |
| Tyron Guerrero | Shoulder. Placed on the 15-day IL on 9/1 with right shoulder inflammation. The move came this afternoon, and no timetable was attached; it lines him up to be eligible on 9/16. |
| Jason Adam | Shoulder. Adam has progressed to throwing off a mound at the Padres complex after sitting seven weeks and resuming light catch from 90 feet on 8/17, when he said, “Felt clean, I felt no pain, so really good.” The next step is building arm strength before minor league game action; no return date, but the club is optimistic he pitches in the majors by mid-September. |
| Justin Slaten | Elbow. Chris Cotillo reported on 8/31 that Slaten is “on-and-off” throwing and that his symptoms haven’t completely resolved, ruling him out as a candidate to be active when rosters expanded on 9/1. He went on the 15-day IL on 8/16, retroactive to 8/13, and his 8/28 eligibility date has passed. The MRI showed no structural damage. |
| Anthony Bender | Shin. Bender was doing mound work on 9/1, his first reported mound step since the setback. His rehab assignment was paused on 8/21 after he reported soreness in the right shin during his first outing with Triple-A Jacksonville, an 8/18 appearance that ran 24 pitches over an inning-plus and was his first game action in nearly two months. |
| Sam Bachman | Forearm. Bachman has begun throwing bullpens at the Angels’ Arizona complex and was scheduled to pitch in the Arizona Bridge League on 9/1. He still needs to face live hitters before activation, pushing a return to early-to-mid September and rendering his passed 8/18 eligibility date moot. |
| Jeremiah Estrada | Shoulder. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/26, retroactive to 8/25, with a right shoulder impingement. It’s Estrada’s third IL stint of 2026 after elbow and knee issues; San Diego has not given a return estimate, and the timing puts the rest of his regular season in question. He’s eligible on 9/9. |
| Caleb Kilian | Oblique. No new updates since the 8/10 placement, retroactive to 8/9, with a left oblique strain, which Kilian appeared to suffer on his final pitch of the 8/8 win at Toronto. Interim manager Don Mattingly called it a moderate strain and said Kilian would be out “for a while”; his 8/25 eligibility date has passed with no timetable set. |
| Graham Ashcraft | Elbow. Began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on 8/25, his first game action since late May, and was scheduled for at least two more Bats outings on 8/28 and 8/30. He avoided surgery on the right UCL sprain after a 6/2 PRP injection and clean re-imaging on 6/30. |
| Hunter Harvey | Triceps. No new updates since 8/19, when Craig Counsell said Harvey’s rehab “hasn’t come along as hoped” and that he isn’t close to facing hitters or heading out on a rehab assignment. He threw a bullpen in Arizona on 8/1 after resuming throwing on 7/8. |
| Cole Sulser | Back. No new updates since 8/19, when he threw a clean inning for Triple-A Durham in what was described as the final step before rejoining Tampa Bay’s bullpen. Two weeks later, he remains on the 15-day IL with no timetable listed and no activation reported. He’s been out since the 7/29 placement, retroactive to 7/26, with lower back spasms. |
| Gavin Hollowell | Shoulder. No new updates since 8/19, when Counsell said Hollowell has resumed a throwing program but offered no specifics, adding that he “ended up being shut down from throwing a little longer than anticipated.” No rehab assignment has been scheduled yet. |
| Carlos Estévez | Shoulder. Season over. Estévez will undergo shoulder surgery next week, per Anne Rogers on 9/1. He had been throwing in Arizona but wasn’t progressing, and Rogers noted a return to Kansas City this season was very unlikely regardless. He made exactly one big-league appearance in 2026 before an IL stint that began with a left foot contusion. |
| Blake Treinen | Elbow. Opened a rehab assignment with Single-A Ontario on 8/15 and has since moved up to Triple-A Oklahoma City, reaching four appearances and nearly two weeks of game action by the end of August. The 8/11 transfer to the 60-day IL was a paper move that cleared a 40-man spot for Snell’s activation, not a setback; Dave Roberts said, “No setback.” |
| Edwin Uceta | Shoulder. No new updates since 8/14, when he was playing catch from 75 feet, and still no timetable as of 8/31. He’s working back from a right shoulder impingement dating to February and a subsequent subscapularis strain, with a 4/17 setback that ended his rehab assignment, a new strain diagnosed 4/20, and a second setback plus a PRP injection reported 5/29. |
| Robert Garcia | Shoulder. Garcia threw live batting practice on 8/30 at Triple-A Round Rock and was set to throw again on 9/2, with a rehab assignment possible as soon as this weekend if it goes well, per Jeff Wilson. That’s one step past the two Arizona bullpen sessions Skip Schumaker described last week. |
| Huascar Brazobán | Lat. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/25 with a left lat strain. He last pitched 8/24 against Texas, allowing a run on one hit over an inning, and no timetable has been set; he’s eligible on 9/9. |
| Peyton Gray | Elbow. Placed on the 15-day IL on 8/31, retroactive to 8/30, with right elbow inflammation after feeling discomfort while throwing. He is not expected to miss the rest of the season and is eligible on 9/14. Gray last pitched on 8/29 at Milwaukee. |
| Matt Gage | Elbow. Began a rehab assignment on 8/21, following a clean 8/13 bullpen after which he said he “feels great.” He landed on the IL on 7/4 with an elbow strain after a 51-pitch outing at Coors Field; the MRI showed a moderate flexor strain, and he avoided Tommy John, opting for PRP and lubricant injections. |
