Catcher News and Playing Time Changes
- Adley Rutschman still hasn’t started a rehab assignment and likely won’t be ready until next week at the earliest. There’s a chance Chadwick Tromp sneaks back into the mix over Alex Jackson.
- Edgar Quero is starting every game against left-handed pitching. The White Sox face two southpaws next weekend if you need someone for the end of the week.
- Victor Caratini is drawing starts at catcher, DH, and first base, so he’s getting starting-catcher volume right now.
- Jonah Heim and Kyle Higashioka are alternating starting at catcher and DH; both have started in six of the last seven.
- Sean Murphy is pulling ahead of Drake Baldwin in Atlanta. Murphy is drawing starts at DH with Marcell Ozuna being held back in case of a trade. If Ozuna is traded, both catchers may draw everyday starts between catcher and DH.
- Keibert Ruiz is still rehabbing from a concussion and likely won’t be back this week.
- Francisco Alvarez is hitting well at Triple-A. He should be back with the Mets before long. Luis Torrens will shift into a backup role once Alvarez can prove himself in the majors.
- James McCann is practicing at first base and could find additional playing time.
Streaming Options
I want to highlight two catchers who may prove to be better than streamers and are available in 99% of leagues.
Adrian Del Castillo (1% on Yahoo): Del Castillo was called up for the Diamondbacks’ first game following the All-Star break. He went 3 for 4 as Arizona’s designated hitter in his season debut. He had four home runs in 14 games at AAA with a .945 OPS. He has a path to regular playing time with Pavin Smith on the injured list. Del Castillo has struggled with staying healthy, but could prove to be a difference-maker down the stretch.
Luis Campusano (0% on Yahoo): Campusano’s year has been starkly different between Triple-A and the majors. In 57 games in the minors, he’s tallied 14 homers and earned a 1.014 OPS. His time in the majors has yielded a .000 average in 10 games. He’s been up and down his whole career, but we’ve seen a 133 wRC+ season out of him in 2023. Campusano is back at Triple-A for the moment, but neither Elias Díaz nor Martín Maldonado has proven to be an offensive asset this season. He should get an extended look before long (though likely not this week).
Pedro Pagés (1% on Yahoo): Three games at Coors, what more do you need?
Danny Jansen (2% on Yahoo): Three games against the White Sox, three games in Cincinnati. Batting .260 with four homers in the past month.
Kyle Higashioka (1% on Yahoo): On a heater (.400 average and three homers in the last two weeks), playing every day between catcher and DH, facing the Athletics and the back end of the Braves rotation.
