Catcher News and Playing Time Changes

The Atlanta catching situation looks to be an even split between Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy. I’m still giving Baldwin the edge this week, simply because he’s batting higher in the order. His bat has cooled, and Murphy could quickly regain the upper hand.

There were several changes among the backups this week, none of which are particularly relevant outside of the deepest of AL/NL only leagues. There’s not much fantasy upside to be found in this group, but here they are if you need them.

Angels legend Matt Thaiss was traded from the White Sox to the Rays—he looks to be the backup in Tampa with Ben Rortvedt DFA’ed.

The newly healthy Korey Lee will take Thaiss’ place with the White Sox.

The other Chicago backup has changed, too: Reese McGuire was called up by the Cubs to replace injured Miguel Amaya.

Willie MacIver was called up to serve as the A’s backup — at least Jhonny Pereda will always have the ball he struck Ohtani out with.

Toronto called up Alí Sánchez to serve as their backup.

Streaming Options

Henry Davis (PIT) 1% on Yahoo: Davis has settled into a groove in the last week, putting up a .286 average with a homer to boot. With Joey Bart on the seven-day concussion IL, Davis has the perfect runway to find another level. Davis has never been a Statcast darling, but he’s shown his talent in the minors, where he’s shown big home run potential and an OPS north of .900 in the upper minors since 2023. There was a reason he was drafted first overall in 2021. He has a couple of good matchups against the back half of the Houston order to start the week, and then a gauntlet of Framber Valdez and the Phillies’ aces, but I think a few days as the starter will do Davis good.

Tyler Stephenson (CIN) 29% on Yahoo: Stephenson is on a heater, going eight for 19 in the past week with three home runs. He has good matchups scattered across the week and six games in Cincinnati to give him a boost.

Agustín Ramírez (MIA) 36% on Yahoo: Ramirez was in a bit of a slump after his scorching start, but he’s picking it up again. He’s seven for 27 (.259) in the last week with one homer and five RBI. He starts at DH on each of his off days and matches up with the Rockies and some of the more volatile Tampa starters.

Alejandro Kirk (TOR) 9% on Yahoo: Kirk is swinging a hot bat with a .365 average in the past month. I don’t love his matchups, but he’s hitting the ball hard with a 92.0 mph average exit velocity (84th percentile) and a .303 expected Batting Average (93rd percentile). He’s lifting the ball a touch more than he has in recent years, and it should translate to home runs soon enough.
