Depth Chart and Matchups
Catcher News and Playing Time Changes
- Adley Rutschman is back and looking better than he has all year. I predicted Jacob Stallings would be his backup, but Alex Jackson ended up winning the job.
- Ben Rice is catching in New York, pushing J.C. Escarra out. Rice should start most days between catcher, first, and DH. He’s worth a look in most leagues.
- Nick Fortes moved 200 miles from Miami to Tampa but kept his starting job. Matt Thaiss will stick around as the backup.
- Alejandro Kirk spent the past week on the IL, rehabbing from a concussion. He should be back tomorrow, but if he’s not, Tyler Heineman will start with Alí Sánchez as the backup option.
- Edgar Quero has started nine games since the All-Star Break, while Kyle Teel has only started in six. The White Sox have faced plenty of left-handed starters in that time, and Teel is still the likely starter most weeks.
- Luke Maile will replace Freddy Fermin as the backup in Kansas City.
- Drake Baldwin continues to be the primary option against right-handed pitching, while Sean Murphy starts against southpaws. It’s not a strict platoon, but it should be enough to stream around if Baldwin and Murphy are available.
- With Fortes’ departure, Liam Hicks will slot into a proper backup role behind Agustín Ramírez. Hicks is still playing at first base some days, elevating him above some of the strict backup options on this list.
- Danny Jansen was shipped to Milwaukee to back up William Contreras. Contreras plays behind the plate almost every day, seriously restricting Jansen’s value. I don’t see Jansen working out in any league, barring injury to Contreras.
- James McCann has drawn slightly more starts than Jose Herrera, but it’s close enough to call it a timeshare in Arizona.
Streaming Options
Kyle Teel – CHW (4% on Yahoo!): Quero has been hitting better than Teel, but he won’t have the benefit of facing three lefties like he did last week. He’ll unfortunately play in Seattle, but he’s playing well enough that I think he’s one of the better options at this ownership percentage. Quero has been red-hot and might prove to be the better option despite the lack of lefties.
James McCann – ARI (0% on Yahoo!): The Diamondbacks have a six-game homestand next week, squaring off against the Padres and the Rockies. McCann has great home splits, and the Rockies’ pitching can make any park look like Coors.
Dillon Dingler – DET (9% on Yahoo!): Dingler’s on a heater and will face the freshly decimated Twins and the perennially dire Angels.
Ben Rice – NYY (21% on Yahoo!): Some good pitching matchups lie ahead for Rice, and he’s simply a better hitter than most of the catchers at this level of availability.
Liam Hicks – MIA (1% on Yahoo!): It’s a mixed bag for the Marlins, facing Hunter Brown and Spencer Strider, but also some easier matchups against the back half of Atlanta’s rotation.
