Catcher News and Playing Time Changes

  • Adley Rutschman should be back by the start of next week. Jacob Stallings will likely take the backup role, but Alex Jackson could instead.
  • Edgar Quero is starting most games against left-handed pitching. The White Sox face three southpaws next week if you need the volume
  • Victor Caratini is still drawing starts at catcher, DH, and first base, so he’s getting starting-catcher volume right now. He’s swinging a hot bat too, with a .360 average in the past week.
  • The duel between Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin rages on in Atlanta. Baldwin won last week with one more start than Murphy, though all came against right-handed pitching. Both catchers are drawing starts at DH, with Marcell Ozuna being held back in case of a trade. If Ozuna is traded, both catchers may continue to draw everyday starts between catcher and DH.
  • Keibert Ruiz is still rehabbing from a concussion and likely won’t be back this week.
  • Francisco Alvarez is back in the bigs after hitting well at Triple-A. He’s batting .300 with one home run in just three games played since being recalled.
  • Elias Díaz and Martín Maldonado are in a 50/50 split for the starting job. Maldonado drew the most recent consecutive starts, so he gets the nod as the primary backstop in the matchup grid.

Streaming Options

Kyle Teel (4% on Yahoo): Teel had a 4-for-5 game with his first major-league home run last week. His wRC+ is up to 122 over 28 games this season. He has an above-average plate approach for a catcher, and league-average power and sprint speed. Teel had 13 home runs and 12 steals in 112 games in the minors last year, and he could certainly replicate that rate in the bigs. A date with the Angels later next week pushes Teel up to strong-streamer status.

Drake Baldwin (20% on Yahoo): Baldwin is having a potential Rookie of the Year debut. He fought hard for playing time, but he’s earned it now, with a .270 average and two home runs in the past month. As much as I love Rich Hill, he and a series in Cincinnati will give Baldwin a boost next week.

Francisco Alvarez (15% on Yahoo):  Alvarez has a hit in each of the three games he’s played since returning to the majors. If his power is completely back, he could have a phenomenal second half.

Victor Caratini (23% on Yahoo): Caratini has a reserved spot on this list until his weekly average falls below .300. At this rate, he’ll be here until next season.

Henry Davis (0% on Yahoo): Davis recently won the starting job over Joey Bart and will enjoy three games in Coors to celebrate. He plays the Giants at Oracle earlier in the week, so he’s a much better target next weekend.
