Catcher News and Playing Time Changes

  • Carlos Narváez has missed his last three games due to knee soreness. He should return as Boston’s primary catcher this weekend.
  • Hunter Feduccia looks to have won the starting job over Nick Fortes in Tampa Bay. It’s a likely platoon situation; Feduccia sat in favor of Fortes in three of the team’s four contests against southpaws.
  • The White Sox have a platoon going as well, with Kyle Teel starting against right-handed pitching and Edgar Quero against lefties. The Pope’s team faces three each of left- and right-handed pitchers next week, so expect their playing time to be fairly even. Both players draw starts at DH once a week or so.
  • With Christian Vázquez on the IL, the Twins will turn to Mickey Gasper and Jhonny Pereda to back up Ryan JeffersNeither has played yet, leaving the playing time situation murky.
  • Willie MacIver is back in action in Sacramento. Austin Wynns hit the IL with an abdominal strain; no word yet on how long he’s out. MacIver isn’t in line for much playing time with Shea Langeliers playing as well as he is.
  • Kyle Higashioka is slightly outperforming Jonah Heim and winning more playing time as a result.
  • Drake Baldwin’s platoon is getting stricter and stricter. The Braves are lined up for three right-handed pitchers and three left-handed pitchers; it’s not looking good for Baldwin’s playing time this week.
  • Henry Davis has started in five of the Pirates’ last seven games, compared toJoey Bart’s two. Davis is averaging .079 in the second half, so who knows how long he keeps the job.
  • The Rockies called up Braxton Fulford, who immediately leapfrogged Austin Nola for the backup catcher job. Fulford may get a handful of starts at DH, particularly against lefties.
  • There’s finally a primary catcher in San Diego (maybe). Martín Maldonado is out, and Elias Díaz appears to have slid into a backup role. It’s Freddy Fermin who has emerged as the frontrunner for the starting job — he’s been swinging a hot bat since being traded away from the Royals. Fermin has started in four games since being traded, compared to Diaz’s three, so he hasn’t run away with the job by any means.

Streaming Options

Ryan Jeffers – MIN (16% on Yahoo!): Fresh off the paternity list, Jeffers is scorching hot, batting .385 with a homer in the last week — the dad-strength is real. He’s starting at DH plenty, too, and he’ll dodge Tarik Skubal in next week’s four-game homestand against the Tigers.

Pedro Pagés – STL (1% on Yahoo!): Three games against the Rockies – though sadly not in Colorado. He holds a .385 average in the last week, though his last month was significantly worse.

Patrick Bailey – SFG (3% on Yahoo!): Bailey’s swinging a hot bat (.290 in the last month), and has six games against a mixed bag of pitching. He’ll play at home all of next week, but he hits better there than he does away. Don’t expect any home runs, though: he has just two on the season.

James McCann – ARI (0% on Yahoo!): Not hitting well lately (.087 in the last two weeks), but he has four games at Coors to brighten his spirits.

Freddy Fermin – KCR (1% on Yahoo!): An absolutely brutal slate of pitchers coming up, so he’s more of a speculative add than a streamer. Still, he’s hitting quite well and could keep it going.
