Depth Chart and Matchups

  • Liam Hicks (MIA) gets the odd start against RHP.

Catcher News and Playing Time Changes

  • Gary Sánchez is the backup in Baltimore, with Maverick Handley returning to AAA. Adley Rutschman is day-to-day with abdominal tightness, and it’s unclear if he’ll need an IL stint. If he does, it will likely be Sánchez slotting in as the primary catcher, and Handley would be called up to serve as back-up.
  • Ben Rice got his first start behind the plate. It’s unlikely he’ll end up with enough starts to earn catcher eligibility, but it’s something to keep an eye on.
  • Austin Wynns has emerged as the leading option over Willie MacIver in Sacramento. There’s no word on when Shea Langeliers will return, though he’s reported to have started a hitting progression as of today.
  • Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy are still locked in a fifty-fifty timeshare, with Murphy getting every start against left-handed pitching. Atlanta won’t face any southpaws until the weekend, when they line up against two.
  • Joey Bart is healthy and back to starting in Pittsburgh. Henry Davis is the second option.
  • Iván Herrera hit the IL with a hamstring strain. He was already DH’ing more than he was C’ing, so Pedro Pagés will continue to start every day with Yohel Pozo backing him up. It’s unclear how long Herrera will be on the shelf, but it will likely be through the All-Star break.
  • Gabriel Moreno is on the 10-day IL with a hairline fracture in his finger. There’s a good chance he’ll be out through the All-Star break. Jose Herrera will shift into a starting role, with the newly called-up Aramis Garcia serving as backup.
  • Elias Díaz and Martín Maldonado are splitting time evenly — though things seem to be trending more in Díaz’s direction.

Streaming Options

Tyler Stephenson (CIN) 44% on Yahoo – Stephenson is coming off a great week, where he batted .318 with one home run and eight RBI. He’ll play six games next week in the great hitting park that is Great American Ballpark, so there’s a good chance he can keep it rolling. He’s living or dying by his power, thanks to his 36.7% strikeout rate.  He’ll look to get that closer to the more palatable 22.7% strikeout rate he maintained in 2024.

Gary Sánchez (BAL) – 1% on Yahoo – Sanchez has looked good since his return from the IL last Friday, going six for 14 with two home runs. He’ll see increased playing time next week if Rutschman ends up missing any games and will face a mixed bag of pitchers ranging from Patrick Corbin to Jacob deGrom. Even if Rutschman is healthy, Sanchez has drawn four starts in seven days between catcher and DH, which could certainly play in deep AL-only leagues.

Alejandro Kirk (TOR) – 39% on Yahoo – Kirk is having an excellent June with a .355 average and four home runs with a .988 OPS. He’s cooled off a bit in the past week, but is drawing starts against Cleveland and Boston next week – both in the bottom third by team ERA. He’s destined for further success: he leads all catchers in average exit velocity at 92.5 mph and holds the second-lowest strikeout rate with 10.7%.

Carlos Narváez (BOS) – 22% on Yahoo – The Red Sox will square off against the Angels and Blue Jays, with their respective 4.67 and 4.24 team ERA. Narvaez has settled into the starting role nicely, batting .270 and slugging six homers this year.
