Catcher News and Playing Time Changes
- The biggest catching news of the week is Samuel Basallo. Adley Rutschman hit the IL just days after Basallo got the call from Triple-A, opening a path to playing time for the rookie. Basallo slashed .270/.377/.589 in the minors, with 23 home runs, a .986 OPS, and a 150 wRC+. The 21-year-old is one of the best prospects in baseball, and he hit the ground running with a .286 average in his first four games of Major League action. Alex Jackson will remain the backup catcher, though he may draw more starts than usual while Basallo gets eased in.
- Ben Rice has overtaken Austin Wells for playing time behind the plate. Rice plays first base on his off-days, making him an even better fantasy option. He’s red-hot, too, averaging .391 with three home runs in the last week.
- A sad tale for the Mets, Francisco Alvarez hit the IL just as he was heating up. Luis Torrens will be the primary option, and Hayden Senger will back him up. Senger started two days in a row, both against left-handed pitching. He could be a sneaky option in deep leagues where playing time is at a premium.
- The Reds lost Tyler Stephenson to a fractured thumb. Jose Trevino has started every game since Stephenson went down, but Will Banfield should be the backup while Stephenson is on the shelf.
- In some good news for the Diamondbacks, Gabriel Moreno is healthy and in the lineup. James McCann will likely shift into a backup role. Adrian Del Castillo could be in line for the occasional start, but his playing time will slip unless McCann starts playing at first base.
Streaming Options
Ben Rice – NYY (50% on Yahoo): Scorching hot and an excellent hitter. I’d take Rice over guys like Hunter Goodman and Agustín Ramírez right now. He’ll play four games against the White Sox to close the week to sweeten the deal.
Carson Kelly – CHC (24% on Yahoo): Three games at Coors should help Kelly snap his cold streak. He’ll play there starting next Friday; he could be a good “break glass in case of emergency” last-minute stream.
Dillon Dingler – DET (11% on Yahoo): Plays three games against the Athletics in Sacramento to start the week. He’ll see some of the better Royals pitching from Friday on; he could be a nice pair with Kelly.
Pedro Pagés – STL (4% on Yahoo): Pages is batting .375 with three home runs in August. He should finish the month strong thanks to matchups against the Pirates at home and the Reds at Great American Ballpark.
Jonah Heim – TEX (5% on Yahoo): Heim is batting .381 over the last seven days and will square off against the Angels, followed by the Athletics in Sacramento. Heim and Kyle Higashioka are still splitting time, but both see occasional starts at DH.
Jose Trevino – CIN (1% on Yahoo) and Luis Torrens – NYM (0% on Yahoo!): Both catchers suddenly find themselves as the primary option for their respective teams, and should both benefit greatly from the increased playing time. Trevino’s .674 OPS is a bit more palatable than Torrens’ .574.
